Chapter 995: Chapter 994: Feeling a Bit Cold-hearted
As the afternoon was drawing to a close, Gu Shaoting called Shu Pan ahead of time, wanting to arrange dinner out with her.
He simply wanted to have a lovely time together as a couple, but why was it so hard?
“If you have no social obligations, come home for dinner, darling. It’s less expensive, cleaner than eating out, and the kids haven’t seen you for a long time.” Shu Pan’s reasoning was truly irrefutable.
“Alright, shall I pick you up and we head home?” Gu Shaoting, still hopeful, continued.
“No need, I’ve arranged for the driver to pick me up today.” After saying this, Shu Pan hung up the phone.
Gu Shaoting stared at his suddenly blackened phone screen, dumbfounded and somewhat at a loss. Shu Pan must be angry, he assumed.
Before heading home, Gu Shaoting stopped by a dessert shop to buy a box of cakes and then went to a flower shop and purchased a bunch of “forget-me-nots,” which the shop assistant said symbolized an apology—perfect for making amends.
Arriving home, Shu Pan had not yet returned, probably stuck in traffic.
Gu Shaoting placed the cakes and flowers on the coffee table, the most conspicuous spot so she would see them immediately upon her arrival.
Soon, the kids came home. Joy and Xiaobao, seeing him, were overjoyed. Xiaobao in particular, clung to his legs and refused to let go.
He was moved and lifted Xiaobao in his arms.
Xiaobao wrapped his arms around his neck and kept whispering in his ear, “Daddy, I missed you.”
Gu Shaoting hugged him even tighter.
When Shu Pan arrived home, she was greeted by this affectionate sight of father and son.
She was quite touched; it had been a long time since Gu Shaoting had played so closely with the children.
“Mommy’s back,” Xiaobao noticed Shu Pan’s arrival and immediately climbed down from Gu Shaoting and ran over to her.
Gu Shaoting also turned around; Shu Pan gave him a look and then took Xiaobao’s hand and went to the living room.
“You’re back?” Gu Shaoting was the first to speak, feeling somewhat awkward due to the situation at noon.
“Mhm.” Shu Pan didn’t add anything else.
Until bedtime, Gu Shaoting never found the right opportunity to speak with Shu Pan.
Seeing Shu Pan busy, and unable to insert a word, Gu Shaoting decided to head to his study to deal with documents first.
He had hardly sat down when his phone rang.
Gu Shaoting checked the number—it was unfamiliar, and he didn’t recognize it at all.
Still, he answered. However, once the call connected, the person on the other end remained silent, though breathing could be heard.
“Who is this?” Gu Shaoting spoke coldly, already feeling a bit down and becoming irritated with the bizarre call.
“…Brother Ting, it’s He Shaohuai; I’ve come back,” a low voice finally came from the other end of the phone.
“Shaohuai? Welcome back.” Gu Shaoting hadn’t expected this, as he had just heard from He Ming that he would return soon.
“Yeah, thanks. Maybe we can meet up with He Ming sometime soon.” Hearing Gu Shaoting’s voice as usual, He Shaohuai finally felt less nervous.
In the past, he had ignored the advice of his brothers, leading to his current predicament of being almost homeless.
“Sure, we’ll chat then,” Gu Shaoting felt sentimental but was also happy to have another brother nearby.
Gu Shaoting stayed in the study until 10 PM before returning to his room, and Shu Pan was still awake.
Gu Shaoting walked over to her and suddenly embraced her from behind, “Dear, I’m really sorry about today, I got held up by some things.”
Shu Pan was initially startled, then she replied, “Let’s not talk about things that have already passed.”
“You’re angry,” Gu Shaoting stated confidently.
“I’m not angry, just worried about you. As long as you’re okay, it’s all good,” Shu Pan said calmly, but deep down, she felt a bit disheartened.
