Chapter 10: Chapter Ten: Meeting a Mysterious Man
Oxford University, 2009
As the intercom crackled to life, a stern voice echoed through the hallways, urging all students to report to their dorms immediately.
Lauren turned to her cousin Margaret and asked, "Are you ready to head to their dorm?"
Margaret nodded, adjusting her backpack as they prepared to leave the common area. The atmosphere was charged with a mix of excitement and apprehension as they made their way through the bustling corridors, eager to see what the evening would hold.
As they walked for a couple of minutes, the sounds of laughter and chatter faded behind them. Just as they rounded a corner, Margaret suddenly bumped into someone.
"Whoa, sorry!" she exclaimed, stepping back to get a better look at the person she had collided with. It was a tall old man with tousled hair and a serious look.
The old man chuckled with an evil sound, adjusting his glasses as he looked down at Margaret. "It's quite alright, my dear," he said, his voice serious but firm. "Just be sure to watch where you're going next time," he said with a serious and mean tone.
Then Lauren, speaking protectively for her cousin, says, "Hey, my cousin said she was sorry." She took responsibility for what happened. So my suggestion to you is, what should you have said to her? What you should have said is, "It's quite alright." Things happen. Just be a little bit more careful in the future. Using more careful wording would be a better choice.
As she spoke, Lauren's frustration sparked a surge of energy within her. A burst of magic resonated from her body, causing the lights to flicker dramatically. The wind outside howled as if echoing her emotions, swirling around them with an intensity that matched her protective spirit. The atmosphere shifted, charged with an unsettling mix of power and urgency, making it clear that Lauren was not to be trifled with.
The old man says with a neutral, wicked tone, "You're totally right. My apologies, Ms."
Margaret then replied, "It's quite alright."
After a moment, the old man added, "But I really must be going now." The old man tipped his hat slightly and, with a sly grin, turned to the young ladies in front of him. "Well, my dear ladies, I wish you all a good day. With that, he strode away, leaving an air of intrigue behind him.
Both Lauren and Margaret exchanged nervous glances. "Thank you," they said in unison, their voices tinged with a hint of uncertainty.
"That was awkward, don't you agree, Lauren?" Margaret said this while breaking the silence that lingered after the old man's departure.
Lauren nodded, her brow furrowing slightly. "Yeah, it was. I wasn't expecting that," she replied, glancing back in the direction the old man had gone. The moment hung in the air, filled with unspoken thoughts and a shared sense of bewilderment.
"Shall we continue to our dorms?" Lauren suggested to Margaret, her voice breaking the tension that had settled between them.
Margaret nodded, still processing the encounter. "Yeah, let's go," she replied, her tone a mix of relief and curiosity. As they turned to leave, the weight of the awkward moment lingered in their minds, but the familiarity of their dorms offered a comforting escape from the unsettling experience.
They walked side by side, the quietness of the hallway contrasting with the chaos of their thoughts. Each step felt lighter as they approached the door to their shared sanctuary, ready to leave the day's confusion behind.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the university, Peter Knox stood alone in a dimly lit room, the weight of his words hanging heavily in the air. "So you lied to me, Raymond Anderson," he said aloud, his voice echoing off the walls. The silence that followed was deafening, filled only with the unspoken secrets that lingered. "You kept your granddaughter's magic a secret from me. But I promise you. You will pay for it with your life, and I will have your granddaughter's magic. No matter what." Peter's heart raced, grappling with the betrayal and the implications it held for their future.
Back in Sharonville, Ohio, Raymond sensed his granddaughter Lauren's magic stirring within her. It was a force he had tried to protect, but now it felt vulnerable, exposed to the dangers Peter posed. He knew he had to act quickly to safeguard her, to keep her magic from falling into the wrong hands. The weight of his past decisions pressed heavily on him as he prepared to confront the threats looming over his family.
Back at Oxford University, a certain vampire sensed Lauren's burst of magic resonating across vast distances. It was a powerful, vibrant energy, one that stirred old memories and instincts within him. He could feel the urgency in its pulse, a call for protection that he had not anticipated.
