Chapter 4: Chapter 4
"Luffy ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi," Shanks said, his gaze settling on Luffy with a complex expression. It wasn't the same easygoing look he'd given the boy earlier—there was something else there now. Something thoughtful.
Lucy sighed. It didn't take a genius to figure out that Devil Fruits were valuable—extremely valuable. Just how was Luffy supposed to pay Shanks back for something like that? It wouldn't even be strange if Shanks wanted him dead for eating such a rare treasure.
But Shanks didn't. He just stood there, already letting the matter slide with a resigned shrug.
"Oh… just a rubber man?" Lucy muttered, unable to hold back a laugh.
Luffy's face turned red with fury. "What's so funny?!"
"how useful can rubber really be?." Lucy laughed before pausing as he noticed something was off with the bar.
"Why are there cracks on the wall? Was that devil fruit thing so powerful it caused this… Well, I'm going home," Lucy muttered, finally noticing the fractures running along the bar's walls and floor.
"That's the bathroom door," one of Shanks's crewmates called out, watching Lucy walk confidently in the wrong direction.
Lucy froze, teeth-gritting in silent frustration. Without a word, he spun around, took the correct door, and stormed off.
Uta, still a bit light-headed from the earlier shock, hesitated. Should she stay and make sure Luffy was alright? Or chase after Lucy before he wanders off somewhere stupid again? With an exasperated sigh, she ran after Lucy.
As they stepped into the sunlight, Lucy glanced toward the distant city on the horizon. Foosha Village might've been small, but Dawn Island was home to a proper city not too far away.
"If devil fruits are worth that much, there's gotta be some kind of book or something that lists them all," Lucy mused, eyeing the city thoughtfully.
The Gao Kingdom ruled over this island, and its capital, surrounded by towering walls, was exactly where Lucy's gaze was fixed.
"You're looking at the ocean," Uta pointed out, causing Lucy to grit his teeth in frustration. 'Damn, my sense of direction…'
"Yes, there's a book on Devil Fruits. I'm sure the library there would have it," Uta added casually. Lucy's eyes lit up with expectation as he turned toward her. Uta froze, then quickly shook her head.
Lucy nodded eagerly. Uta shook her head again, more firmly this time.
"Yes," Lucy insisted, grabbing her by the shoulders.
"No," Uta snapped, slapping his hands away and stepping back, glaring at him like he'd lost his mind.
"That's dangerous and reckless. It's not worth the trouble just for a dumb book," Uta said, crossing her arms.
Lucy shrugged. "Fine, I'll go by myself."
Uta's face twisted in annoyance. She sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "You owe me."
"Deal," Lucy said with a wide grin, knowing full well he'd roped her in. The smug look on his face only irritated Uta further, but she still grabbed his hand and started pulling him toward the wall.
"Ugh, you're slow." Without warning, Lucy scooped her up, threw her onto his shoulders, and bolted at full speed.
"Hey! Warn me first, you idiot!" Uta yelled, gripping his head for balance.
But speed didn't fix Lucy's sense of direction. Even with Uta shouting clear instructions, he veered left when she pointed straight and right when she yelled "Just keep going forward!"
After what felt like an eternity of constant corrections and Uta questioning her life choices, they finally skidded to a stop before the massive wall surrounding the capital.
"So, how are we getting over this wall without being seen?" Uta asked, hopping off Lucy's back. His strength always surprised her, though by now, it was nothing new.
"We'll climb. I already checked on the way here, no guards are patrolling this side. And the few that might? I can knock them out quickly," Lucy replied, crouching down so Uta could climb onto his back again.
Rubbing his hands together, he bent his knees, then launched himself into the air.
"Whoa—!" Uta yelped, clinging tighter as they landed effortlessly on a thick tree branch.
Without wasting a second, Lucy jumped again, rocketing toward the wall. Mid-air, he reached out—and stabbed his fingers straight into the stone.
"How strong are your fingers?!" Uta blurted, eyes wide as she watched him hang there like it was nothing.
"Pretty strong," Lucy said casually, already pulling himself upward with nothing but his grip. "I started doing finger pull-ups and finger bench presses. Thought it'd be cool to have fingers strong enough to pierce stone… and, well, I made it happen."
Uta could only stare as Lucy climbed higher, effortlessly stabbing his fingers into the wall, pulling himself up, and repeating the process like it was the easiest thing in the world. His legs didn't even touch the wall—he was scaling it with pure finger strength.
Uta stayed quiet, simply staring at Lucy's back like she was looking at a freak. It didn't take long for them to reach the top of the wall. Lucy crouched low, eyes sharp as he scanned for guards. Spotting a few, he waited until they turned away before launching himself into the air.
The movement was so fast, none of the guards noticed. Not that it would've mattered—even if they were looking right at him, their eyes wouldn't be sharp enough to catch Lucy's speed.
They cleared the wall in an instant. On the other side, Lucy didn't slow down. He kicked off the air like a bullet, shooting toward the capital while plummeting from a dangerous height.
Uta almost screamed, eyes wide with panic. But before the cry could escape, Lucy acted. He pulled her into a princess carry, one hand clamping gently over her mouth. His calm gaze met hers, completely unfazed by the fall.
Seconds before they hit the ground, Lucy tossed Uta lightly into the air, just enough to soften the landing for her. As for him? He didn't bother to slow down. His body was far too strong for something this small to even scratch him.
Lucy hit the ground with a solid thud, landing like it was nothing. When Uta fell back into his arms, trembling and wide-eyed.
"N-Never do that again," Uta stammered, her body trembling as she scrambled out of Lucy's arms the moment he caught her.
"Is that the favor I owe you?" Lucy asked, casually setting her down. Uta shot him a hateful glare, muttering under her breath as she stomped ahead, eyes scanning the area for any sign of a library.
"Excuse me, where's the library?" Uta asked a passerby. The man blinked, pointed down the street, and went on his way.
"I'm going to steal the book," Lucy said, already planning his escape. "So, wait right there. I'll go inside, grab it, jump out the window, land on the roof, and regroup with you before we sprint for the wall."
Uta froze, turning to him with a blank, deadpan stare. "…What?" Lucy asked, genuinely confused.
"Let's do this. I'll take you inside, show you where the window is, and you get the book. Wait for me to be outside before you jump out," Uta said with a snort,
Lucy raised an eyebrow. "That's literally what I just said. Do you not feel even a hint of shame, spitting my own words back at me like you came up with the plan?"
Uta's eye twitched. Her fists clenched, and she shot him a glare that practically screamed: Try me. "Careful," Lucy teased, smirking. "Keep looking at me like that, and I might blush."
That was the last straw. Uta swung at him, but Lucy had already darted to the side, laughing as her fist sailed past his head.
"Idiot," she muttered, forcing herself to stop before she drew too much attention. With an annoyed snort, she stomped toward the library entrance.
Lucy, wisely deciding not to push his luck further, quickly followed. Getting lost on the way up the stairs to the library would've been too embarrassing. Although he doubted it would happen, he was too scared to test his luck.
