Chapter 202: Chapter 201: The Chosen One
"Hey, stop!"
A loud shout made the purse-snatching thug shudder. He turned his head and saw a burly Black man chasing after him. Panicked, the thief frantically looked around before dashing into a nearby alleyway.
The burly man followed closely behind.
"Let's go check it out," Captain America said.
Exchanging a glance, he and the Winter Soldier immediately sprinted toward the alley where the thief and the man had disappeared.
Before they even reached the entrance, gunshots rang out from within.
"Damn it!"
Captain America muttered under his breath and quickened his pace.
Just then, someone ran out of the alley—it was the purse snatcher, now clutching a handgun.
Seeing figures approaching, the thief's face twisted in alarm, and he raised the gun, ready to fire.
But before he could pull the trigger, Captain America, with a grim expression, flicked a small rock toward him, striking his wrist with pinpoint accuracy.
With a cry of pain, the thief dropped the gun.
Without sparing him a glance, Captain America rushed into the alley.
The Winter Soldier, who was right behind him, swiftly chopped the thief at the back of his neck, knocking him unconscious. Though they hadn't spoken a word, their cooperation was seamless—years of fighting side by side had honed their teamwork to perfection.
After calling the police, the Winter Soldier entered the alley and joined Captain America, his expression turning grim as he took in the scene.
The burly Black man lay on the ground, bleeding heavily from two gunshot wounds. His clothes were soaked in blood, and one of the bullets had struck near his heart—it was unclear whether it had hit the organ directly.
"Hey, buddy, hang in there! Stay with me!"
Captain America shouted, crouching down. He could see the man's pupils beginning to dilate. If he lost consciousness now, there was no telling if he would wake up again.
The sharp command seemed to have an effect—the man's gaze refocused slightly.
"I've already called for an ambulance. Do you think he'll make it?" the Winter Soldier asked, glancing at Captain America, who was pressing down on the wounds to slow the bleeding.
Looking back toward the street, he noticed that passersby had merely taken a quick glance into the alley before walking away, unwilling to get involved.
Captain America's face was grim. He could feel the man's heartbeat growing weaker—he wouldn't last much longer.
"We should use the Green Lantern ring to heal him. Han Yu said the ring has medical capabilities. With this kind of injury, the ring should be able to save him," the Winter Soldier suggested.
Han Yu had explained the Green Lantern ring's functions to them during their training, and healing was one of its most critical abilities. They had even undergone systematic training to handle emergency situations like this.
"I'll do it…"
Captain America reached into his pocket, pulled out a Green Lantern ring, and slipped it onto his finger.
Taking a deep breath, he moved his hands toward the wounded man, ready to channel the ring's energy to heal him.
But just as he was about to activate the power, a sudden beam of light shot down from the sky, instantly merging into the man's body.
Though it happened in an instant, both Captain America and the Winter Soldier clearly saw what had entered the man—
A Green Lantern ring.
"He was chosen…?"
"It looks like it…"
Inside the ring's space, the man's consciousness awakened.
Slowly opening his eyes, he found himself floating in a vast, chaotic void.
"Where… where am I?"
He patted his body in confusion.
Not only were his gunshot wounds gone, but even his clothes were completely intact.
As soon as he spoke, a calm voice echoed through the chaotic space.
"Sam Wilson, because of your integrity and courage, we have chosen you. We offer you the opportunity to become a member of the Green Lantern Corps and wield one of the most powerful forces in the universe—the Green Lantern Ring. Do you accept?"
Had Han Yu been present, he would have been shocked—this man was none other than the future ally of Captain America in the original timeline, the Falcon.
"What kind of organization is this? I've never heard of it before." Sam hesitated for a moment before asking, "And what happens if I refuse?"
After all, he had never heard of the Green Lantern Corps before. And the claim that this ring held "one of the most powerful abilities in the universe" was hard to believe.
"If you refuse, the ring will leave your body. It will take nothing and leave nothing behind."
The Green Lantern Ring's voice remained indifferent.
As soon as it spoke, Sam felt two wounds reopen on his chest, blood beginning to seep out. The intense pain of the gunshots returned in full force, surging through his body.
The ring was preparing to detach from him. The Green Lantern Ring carried its own sense of pride—being chosen was an honor. Accepting was ideal, but if one refused, the ring would not linger or beg; it would simply leave.
This was precisely how Han Yu had designed it. No matter how suitable a person was, if they did not wish to accept, the ring would depart immediately—never forcing itself upon anyone.
Years from now, those who received the Green Lantern Ring would look back and be grateful for the choice they made today. To join the Green Lantern Corps was an honor.
"I accept! I accept!"
Overwhelmed by the pain and the rapid loss of strength, Sam could no longer remain standing and collapsed to his knees in midair.
"Very well. Now, recite the oath."
The Green Lantern Oath, once spoken by Han Yu, now appeared before Sam. Lines of glowing green energy, forming words in English, floated in the air.
Sam hesitated no longer. He immediately began to recite:
"In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power—Green Lantern's light!"
As soon as he finished, the glowing words transformed into streaks of light and surged into his body.
His gunshot wounds, now enveloped by the Green Lantern Ring's healing energy, began closing at a speed visible to the naked eye.
Sam's consciousness gradually settled, and his eyes drifted shut.
—
"He's waking up. Looks like the ring's healing worked well."
"Of course it worked. If it couldn't even heal minor gunshot wounds like these, how could it handle injuries from intergalactic battles?"
When Sam opened his eyes again, he found himself back in the real world. The first thing he saw were two men crouching beside him, staring at him.
"You're… Steve Rogers? But… who are you?"
Sam recognized Captain America immediately but had no idea who the other man was.
The Winter Soldier shrugged. "It's normal that you don't know me. It'd be weird if you did. I'm Bucky. I'll be your comrade. Now, come on, get up—you shouldn't be lying on the ground."
He extended a hand toward Sam.
Though still confused, Sam grasped Bucky's hand and used the support to stand up.
"Nice to meet you both. I'm Sam Wilson."
