The office was quiet now, with only Tony and Arthur remaining.
Tony suddenly stared at Arthur intently. Arthur blinked and touched his face.
"What's wrong? Is there something on my face?"
Tony didn't answer right away. After a long pause, he let out a deep sigh.
"What's wrong with you?" Arthur asked, his tone changing slightly. "Did you and Pepper have a fight? Let me tell you something, she's a great girl. You better keep your playboy tendencies in check. She doesn't even care about your sordid past - cleaning up after all the trouble you caused with those random hookups. And now she's still willing to stay by your side? What more do you want?"
Arthur's tone became paternal as if he were lecturing a wayward child.
Tony's lips twitched as he spoke. "Mind your own business."
"What did you say?" Arthur raised an eyebrow.
"Nothing." Tony looked deeply at Arthur for a moment, then asked, "Why?"
"Why what?"
"I mean," Tony clarified, "Why did you do it back then? It was my decision. I knew the risks. Why did you... take my place?"
"Isn't it obvious?"
Arthur's expression grew serious.
Tony, stunned, continued to watch him, waiting for an answer.
Arthur spoke slowly, emphasizing each word:
"Because I wanted to upstage you, of course."
"..."
"All right, all right," Arthur waved dismissively. "Let's stop this awkward chitchat, shall we? Two grown men fighting in the bush - doesn't that make your skin crawl? Look, I used to drink with your dad a lot. And every single time, he picked up the tab. Do you think I could stand by and watch his son take on a nuclear bomb while I cower in the corner? Besides..."
Arthur's tone shifted, becoming heavier.
"When your father had his accident, I was still in a deep sleep, unable to do anything. Now that I'm here, do you think I can just sit back and watch you take the same risks? Being a hero - it sounds glorious, but I know it's a deadly game. Take care of yourself. I can't always be there to bail you out."
Tony listened quietly, then suddenly chuckled. "You're still trying to hog the limelight, and you make it sound so noble."
Tony stood and grabbed a nearby bottle. "Come on, let me show you our new toy."
---
For this particular project, Tony had converted an entire lab to ensure the utmost secrecy.
After all, Tony had publicly announced at a press conference that Stark Industries would no longer be in the weapons business. But the development Arthur had entrusted to him was, at its heart, a weapon.
Even inside Stark Tower, the two of them acted as if they were pulling off a heist, moving stealthily to avoid drawing unwanted attention.
"Honestly, the Battle of New York was a mixed bag of pros and cons," Tony said as they walked. "We all know the cons. As for the pros... we have a much better understanding now, which we didn't have before. Plus, we got our hands on some Chitauri weapons for research. I've already sketched out a few ideas, and soon I'll start putting them into production."
Tony gestured animatedly as he explained, his excitement palpable.
Arthur nodded as he listened, fully supporting the idea of developing advanced weapons.
Without adequate preparation, could Earth really rely solely on the limited forces of Wakanda to confront Thanos? After all, the events depicted in the films likely revealed only the tip of the iceberg.
When the time comes, Earth could face a full-scale invasion. The consequences of such a scenario are unimaginable.
Prepare everything possible, by any means necessary!
This approach was undeniably logical.
As they talked, the two soon arrived at a specialized laboratory.
Tony showed Arthur a brand-new weapon.
"Energy-powered large-caliber mobile cannon," Tony announced, pointing to the device in front of them. "I've considered issues of size and materials. If it's too big, it loses mobility. Compact, flexible, mobile, and powerful— these are non-negotiable traits we're gonna need in a weapon.
"As for materials, that's a trickier issue. It's not practical to use rare metals because our goal is mass production. If it's destroyed, it's not the loss of the weapon itself that concerns me- it's the inability to recover the precious metals. With that in mind..."
Arthur listened to Tony's explanation while staring at the rectangular block of metal in front of him. For a moment he was stunned.
"Are you sure this is the so-called 'mobile cannon' and not a Saint Seiya armor box?"
"Saint Seiya? What's that?" Tony asked.
"Uh... kind of like your Mark series," Arthur explained. "But theirs is Greek-made."
"They stole my idea?" Tony blinked. "Don't worry. Once we're done here, they'll be getting a cease-and-desist letter."
"Stop joking," Arthur sighed. "So how do you use this thing?"
"This."
Tony picked up a bracelet from nearby and snapped it onto Arthur's wrist. "This is the default mode..."
As he spoke, he guided Arthur's wrist toward the metal block. A red light on the bracelet flashed, scanning the metal.
The next moment, the block began to transform.
The result was a cannon-like structure - one end was bulky and equipped with a hovering mechanism.
"It's equipped with an intelligent AI that connects to your wristband. Through the wristband, you can command it to follow you, attack for you, or even choose its attack mode. It currently supports three attack types: standard attack, homing attack, and the last one - a full-on, energy-draining, continuous beam attack."
"Wristband control? Didn't you say it would be AI-controlled?"
"That's for future development," Tony replied. "This one uses wristband control because… it's a gift for you. Oh, and your spaceship— you can take it with you now. This guy too. You can command it to transform. When not in use, it reverts to a compact metal case that you can carry on your back— or store it with your special abilities. Oh, and it's called ''Šumer.'' Considering your naming skills, I took the liberty of naming it for you!"
Arthur opened his mouth, then twitched after a long pause. "So… I've been insulted, haven't I?"
"Pretty much," Tony smirked. "Why not give it a try?"
"Voice activation works?"
"Of course. I've programmed it with your voice data," Tony replied. "Go ahead, try communicating with ''Šumer''—start by activating it."
