Marvel: Dragon King

Chapter 35: CH 35: Guardian

"Are we there yet?" Elliot asked, his voice strained with exasperation as he looked out at the seemingly endless sea of bamboo. His eyes even began to dilate, turning into slits, a sign he was becoming a dragon.

"Calm down," Sicilia whispered, her hand resting reassuringly on his arm.

Elliot sighed, taking a deep breath as he focused on her touch, trying to calm himself down.

"Don't worry, Dad, we're here," Ragnar muttered, his eyes closed as he focused his senses on his hearing, he could detect the sound of rushing water.

"Follow me and stay close," Ragnar said, his mind racing with the possibility that the guardian might target them one by one if they were separated.

"Be ready, I sense someone up front, but I can't see through her mind." Sicilia nodded, her eyes narrowed.

They followed Ragnar, slipping through the bamboo forest until they emerged into a small clearing.

A pond with rushing water lay before them, and a woman stood at the edge of the rocks, wearing a mask and a straw bamboo hat. Her eyes scanned each of them before focusing on Ragnar with narrowed eyes.

"Is she the one who can let us in?" Sicilia asked, her gaze fixed on the woman. She couldn't penetrate the woman's mind.

"Yeah," Ragnar answered, his mind preoccupied. He looked around, wondering where the RV had vanished. It had disappeared as soon as they entered the clearing.

"If you are looking for your vehicle, it isn't here," the Guardian said, her voice calm. She jumped down from the rocks and walked around them. "This is a different space within the forest itself," she explained. "And peeking into someone else's mind without permission is a rude way to greet someone, young lady," she said, looking at Sicilia calmly, emphasizing her age.

"You already saw us when we first got here, so I'll be straight," Ragnar said, trying to offer a harmless smile. "We want to visit Ta Lo."

The Guardian remained silent, not surprised that foreigners knew about Ta Lo. "You should already know that residents of Ta Lo do not accept visitors kindly," she said, her voice was low and filled with warning.

The ones who ventured into Ta Lo were often bewitched by the Soul Eater, a powerful entity seeking to break free.

Just as Ragnar was about to use his fantastic persuasive skills to win her over, the Guardian continued.

"But you may enter," The Guardian said, her gaze settling on Ragnar with a hint of familiarity. Using a chi technique she could sense that Ragnar's life force was close to that of the Great Protector, "But they cannot," she added, turning towards Ororo, Elliot, and Sicilia, who frowned at her words.

"Impossible," Sicilia said, her voice laced with defiance. She stepped forward, ready to fight. She wouldn't let her son go alone. "We can't let our son go alone."

"You may lie to others, mutant, but you can't lie to me," the Guardian shook her head, her eyes focused on Sicilia. She could feel the distinct difference in life force within Sicilia's and Elliot's body. It was nearly impossible for two mutants to give birth to someone like Ragnar.

"Yeah, that won't happen," Ragnar agreed, stepping back. "Your offer is kinda suspicious, don't you think?" He looked at the Guardian with warry eyes.

"I just felt someone would like to see you," the Guardian said softly, her voice barely a whisper. She knew that the Great Protector might be interested in Ragnar if she saw him.

"Looks like we're doing this the hard way then," Sicilia whispered, her eyes flashing with golden light. Psionic energy surged around her hand before she flung it towards the Guardian.

The Guardian jumped, dodging the psionic blast that shattered the rocks. She landed gracefully behind Sicilia. "Temper will be your downfall, young lady," she said, spinning and stepping back to avoid a blast of lightning from Ororo.

Ororo frowned as she walked beside Sicilia, a wave of lightning crackling in her hand.

The Guardian took a fighting stance, unfazed by their abilities.

"Ladies, Ladies, how about we all calm down and talk about it again?" Elliot said, stepping forward, his hands open in a gesture of peace.

"Let's be civilized people and not fight." Elliot knew he was the weakest link, unless he transformed into a dragon.

Sicilia frowned, but she knew he was right. However, she couldn't shake the feeling that she needed to protect her son. "Move," she said, her gaze cold as her overprotective mother side took over.

"Yep, I'm moving," Elliot said, raising up his hand to surrender, stepping aside to let them fight.

"Support me from above," Sicilia said to Ororo, as golden psionic energy pulsed around her hands. She hurled it at the Guardian.

Ororo nodded, her eyes turning white as a gust of wind lifted her into the air. She hovered above, prepared to strike.

BOOM! BOOM!

The Guardian dodged the blasts of golden energy, sending them crashing into the bamboo behind her. She looked up at Ororo, a flicker of interest in her eyes.

"You have great potential, child," the Guardian said, her voice calm. "But for now, it's not enough." She spun, her palm facing Ororo. With a subtle pull, she drew Ororo back down to the ground, the wind no longer supporting her.

"How?" Ororo asked, her voice filled with confusion. She couldn't understand how the Guardian had pulled her down.

"It's not only mutants that exist in this world, child," the Guardian said, her voice soft but firm. She pushed her palm forward, sending a powerful gust of wind that sent Ororo rolling across the ground.

The Guardian then charged toward Sicilia, who had used her psionic energy to conjure a golden sword. She swung it at the Guardian, who dodged with ease, barely a hair's breadth away from the blade.

The Guardian grabbed Sicilia's arm, her grip firm. Just as she was about to deliver a blow, a blur of red and claw-like fury shot towards her.

The Guardian pulled Sicilia to the ground, releasing her grip, and dodged the claws. Her eyes narrowed as she looked at Elliot, who was in the midst of transforming into a dragon.

"I see," The Guardian murmured, understanding something. However, she didn't hesitate, spinning and facing Elliot. With a wave of her hand, a solid wind palm appeared before her. She unleashed it, striking Elliot in the face and knocking him unconscious before he could fully transform.

"You have learned how to fight?" the Guardian asked, dodging Ragnar's incoming attack. She could see the martial arts skills in his movements.

Ragnar didn't answer. Golden horns sprouted from his head, his eyes turned dragon-like, and golden scales appeared on his arms. 'No one told me the Guardian could do that shit!' he thought in frustration.

Ragnar remembered that the Guardian was supposedly blessed by the Great Protector, granting her some control over the wind. 'But what the hell is with the giant palm?' he thought as he attacked the Guardian, his martial arts skills felt awkward and useless.

Ragnar had trained for three years in Huo Yuhao's martial arts, but he'd never had an opponent to test them against.

'They are truly the same,' the Guardian thought, feeling Ragnar's life force more clearly. It was the same as the Great Protector, a Dragon.

Sicilia, who had risen from the ground, charged towards the Guardian, fury flashing in her eyes. She was enraged that the Guardian had knocked out her husband.

'How strong is this woman?!' Ragnar screamed internally because even with his dragon physique she could still dodge his attacks.

'This won't do,' Ragnar thought, watching the Guardian easily dodge their attacks. He stopped and opened his mouth, unleashing a dragon fire.

The Guardian, unfazed, spun and manipulated the wind, blocking the flames. She even gained control over the flames, redirecting them back towards them.

Ragnar expected this, knowing it wouldn't work. He knelt down and used transfiguration on the ground then huge earth spikes erupted and blocked the fire before continuing rushing to the Guardian.

"Interesting," the Guardian murmured as she jumped, using the wind to glide as she dodged the spikes. She landed on the tip of one of the spikes. Just then, a bolt of lightning struck her from above.

"You didn't learn, child," the Guardian whispered, jumping towards another spike as she faced the flying Ororo, who continued to unleash lightning.

The Guardian sped up, leaping into the air and pulling Ororo towards her with the wind. Ororo, caught off guard, flew towards the Guardian, who grabbed her by the throat and then she got thrown towards Ragnar.

Before the Guardian could fall, she gathered the wind into the center of her palms and threw it to the ground.

POOOOF!

The wind sent Ragnar, who had caught Ororo, stumbling backward. Sicilia, who had conjured two golden energy swords, stabbed them into the ground and knelt down to help her stay steady.

When the Guardian landed on the ground, she placed her hands behind her back, looking calmly at the three of them. She nodded with slight approval.

"Follow me," the Guardian said, turning and walking towards the bamboo forest without looking back.

Ragnar set Ororo down and looked towards his mother, who was frowning as she watched the Guardian's retreating figure.

"Take your father with you," Sicilia said, shaking her head, then making the golden swords dissipate, as she knew the Guardian wasn't forcing them to follow.

"Are we still following?" Ragnar asked, hoisting his father onto his shoulder. He couldn't help but feel a pang of melancholy. 'It looks like my memory couldn't be trusted too much,' he thought, sighing.

"We're already here," Sicilia said, her voice laced with distress as she looked at her unconscious husband. "And do you think we could get out of this forest?"

Ragnar looked up and sighed. The RV was still gone. 'Worst case, I let it out,' he thought. He had a weapon inside the suitcase that could probably defeat the Guardian, but he'd left it inside to protect the children and keep it out of greedy eyes.

"Are you fine?" Ragnar asked Ororo as he carried his father, following the Guardian into the bamboo forest.

"I didn't think we would lose so easily," Ororo whispered. At first, she'd been confident in their combined powers, but they still couldn't beat the Guardian.

Sicilia frowned. She didn't like the taste of defeat either, but she couldn't argue with the cold hard facts. They had been outmatched in close combat even when her wind blast knocked out Elliot.

The Guardian continued to lead them deeper into the bamboo forest silently. She couldn't let Ragnar just leave like that, not after finding out what he was. And she knew he wouldn't come unless the others came with him.

Finally, the Guardian stopped in front of a waterfall, The waterfall cascaded down, a shimmering veil of water that seemed to be pouring from a hidden world beyond.

"We're here," the Guardian said turning around as she took off her mask and bamboo hat showing a middle aged woman with white hair smiling towards Ragnar, "From now on you can call me Jiayi,"
