Chapter 32: Chapter 32 : Transfer of People
For this crucial operation, the heroes had amassed every available cruise ship in the world near the port. Their ambitious goal was to transport the millions of people currently in the port to the safety of the Gotham Forest, all within a single day.
If a task of this magnitude were left to global governments, it would be virtually impossible, even with every nation uniting. Relocating millions of people in just one day would far exceed any country's logistical capabilities.
Consider simply gathering enough cruise ships and cargo vessels to carry such a vast number of individuals; no port in the world could accommodate them all simultaneously.
But these were superheroes. What seemed insurmountable for nations was often achievable in their capable hands. The enlarged Atom Smasher, for instance, could effortlessly lift a cruise ship or cargo vessel with one hand.
With him serving as the maritime operator, the Super Hero Dream team merely needed to secure the transport routes to complete the mission.
Here, Clark and the others' primary duty remained crowd control. However, this was a massive gathering of millions. Even though the survivors destined for Gotham City had been meticulously screened at superspeed by the Flash and Superman, there would inevitably be some unruly individuals among them, especially when compared to the well-managed group transported to Paradise Island.
A middle-aged man, noticeably paunchy, ambled through the throng. In this dire global crisis, with a virus spreading via the internet, he remained fixated on his mobile phone. He displayed no concern about potential infection, nor did he seem to care about the risk his actions posed to the other survivors around him.
Finally, an elderly woman could tolerate it no longer. She stood up and addressed the man directly. "Don't you know the virus can spread through the internet? Aren't you afraid of getting infected and dragging all of us down with you?!"
The uncle's behavior clearly indicated his complete disregard for others' well-being or their criticisms. Far from admitting fault, he even swore at the old woman. "What's it to you? I'll watch what I like. Why do you care?"
His defiant attitude naturally sparked widespread indignation among the surrounding survivors. These were, after all, individuals carefully selected by Superman and the Flash, known for their gentle and rational demeanor. They all understood the terrifying nature of the virus. Soon, everyone nearby joined in, openly denouncing the corpulent man.
Yet, this collective condemnation only seemed to inflame him further, rather than shame him. He reached into his backpack, pulled out a black pistol, and aimed it at the crowd. "Let's see which one of you dares to say another word!" Enraged, he pulled the trigger without hesitation, intending to silence the "bastards" who had insulted him.
Bang!
With the sharp crack of gunfire, no one was harmed. Damian had materialized behind him, seizing his wrist and redirecting the shot skyward. "Cease your idiotic behavior."
Damian's uncanny ability to appear unnoticed behind others was beginning to echo Batman's style. However, Damian's slender build clearly lacked the same intimidating presence as his mentor. Instead of showing fear, the uncle spun around, facing Damian, and thrust his phone screen forward. "Is this what you're so afraid of? Look for yourself and see if there's any..."
Bang!!
With another forceful impact, Supergirl swooped in, kicking the phone from the man's hand and sending him sprawling to the ground. Damian seized the opportunity, stomping the phone into fragments. "Since you require our protection, you will follow our instructions. Is that clear?"
Supergirl, ever rational, had merely incapacitated the man without injuring him. However, Talia, who arrived moments later, did not share her restraint. Damian was her son. Even if he had assumed the mantle of the "damn Batman" and become the new Dark Knight, he was still her son.
And this man had dared to point his mobile phone screen at him, exposing him to the risk of infection? Even if the heroes had dismantled the global internet, who could guarantee that no residual viruses lingered in some electronic devices?
Faced with the audacity of someone who had nearly endangered her son, Talia was incandescent with rage. She drew her sword and lunged forward, intent on cleaving the ignorant man in two. Ultimately, it was Damian and Supergirl who managed to restrain Talia. "So many people are watching, don't be impulsive. We are heroes, we cannot kill."
Talia was persuaded, though not by their words alone. Instead, she witnessed a captivating scene. "Really, Damian? But your friend doesn't seem to share your sentiment."
"What?"
Damian turned to see Clark, who was supposed to be maintaining aerial order with his flight, now standing there. Despite his relatively small stature, his Kryptonian strength allowed him to effortlessly seize the man by his collar and lift him into the air.
"Clark! What are you doing?!" Damian didn't rush to intervene as he had with Talia. Instead, he shouted his question, knowing that while his mother Talia might genuinely kill in a fit of rage, Clark was different. Like himself and Superman, Clark would not take a life.
"We truly won't kill anyone, Damian, but that doesn't mean those who disregard others' safety will get away with just a smashed phone if they break the rules." As he spoke, Clark's eyes glowed red. Before the man's horrified gaze, his thermal vision, precisely controlled, pierced directly into his eyes, accurately destroying the corneas without harming anything else.
"What!!!" The man screamed, realizing he was blind, and writhed on the ground, clutching his face. Damian, looking helpless, prepared himself to address the survivors, expecting them to riot over Clark's brutal action. Instead, he found them all staring at the man with expressions of grim satisfaction, entirely unafraid of Clark's violence.
"This... this isn't right..." Damian was still too young. While he might have inherited Batman's combat prowess in other areas, his understanding of human nature was limited by his age.
Talia watched the scene with satisfaction, then patted Damian on the shoulder. She glanced at Clark, who had already flown back into the sky to resume directing the crowd. "Damian, although you're a little older and have more combat experience, you tend to accept the legacy and ideas your father left you.
But unlike you, Clark, the young Superman from another world, is constantly thinking. He's not just thinking about how to be a qualified Superman, but how to be a better person. His future may be even brighter than yours and little Jonathan's."
