Chapter 57: Chapter 57: Nick Fury

Los Angeles, Noon

A military helicopter roared through the skies above Los Angeles, heading toward a vast, open field. Several sleek black sedans were already parked there, waiting for the helicopter to land.

As the military helicopter descended, its spinning rotor blades gradually slowed. At the same time, several large men stepped out of each car, standing solemnly in the open space in front of the landing zone.

The helicopter's hatch opened, and Alex and two agents stepped out.

Alex was the first to descend. His gaze swept over the scene, betraying no emotion. It was clear that these men were elite agents, their combat abilities far exceeding the soldiers Alex had encountered in Canada. Coupled with America's unique high-tech weaponry, any one of these agents could likely take on six or seven soldiers alone.

They were uniformly dressed in black suits, their faces cold and stern, exuding an unmistakable aura of professionalism.

Leading them was a tall Black man, bald and sporting an eye patch. His presence radiated a commanding charisma, the kind that naturally drew attention even in stillness. Around him, the other agents—despite their intimidating demeanor—seemed reduced to mere background props.

"Los Angeles. Mr. Alex—may I call you by your first name?" The one-eyed man strode forward, his authoritative aura pressing down as he stood before Alex.

Despite the man's imposing presence, Alex remained indifferent, a slight smile playing on his lips. No amount of authority could stop his sword, after all.

"Of course. Names exist so others can call us by them, right?" Alex chuckled lightly, waving a hand casually.

"You seem easy to talk to," the one-eyed man remarked.

Although his attempt to overwhelm Alex with his aura had failed, his expression betrayed no surprise. Instead, Alex's nonchalance seemed to earn the man's approval.

If his aura couldn't faze Alex, how could it possibly intimidate the giant serpent?

"My name is Nick Fury. You can call me Nick. For this operation to eliminate the giant serpent in Los Angeles, I hope you'll follow my command."

"Declaring authority the moment we meet? This guy's control issues are off the charts!" Alex thought to himself, though his face revealed nothing. In the past, he might have responded with a punch. But this time was different—his goal was merely to slay the serpent, increase his spiritual energy, and leave. For the sake of Los Angeles' 4.5 million residents, he decided to tolerate this.

"Sure. I'm unfamiliar with Los Angeles, so having you in charge works for me," Alex replied with a faint smile.

Hearing this, Fury nodded, his regard for Alex rising slightly. Extending his hand, he shook Alex's firmly. "Thank you for your understanding. I hope this cooperation will be both pleasant and successful."

Superhumans, due to their extraordinary powers, often harbored anti-establishment tendencies. For Alex to so readily accept the orders of someone he had just met spoke volumes about his maturity—far surpassing the arrogance of typical superhumans. At that moment, Fury began to contemplate recruiting Alex into his organization.

Inside the Car

Sitting in a convoy surrounded by security vehicles, Alex noticed the layers of protection and asked casually, "What's this? Worried about an attack?"

"Precisely," Fury admitted without hesitation, his face darkening. "To be honest, we invited twenty superhumans for this operation. Including you, only three made it to Los Angeles alive. The rest, along with our agents, were assassinated."

Alex fell silent, recalling the assassination attempt he had faced earlier. Whoever had orchestrated this must be a formidable enemy.

"Do you know who's behind it?"

"There are many groups capable of such an operation, but only one would execute it so cleanly—our old nemesis, Hydra," Fury replied grimly, his tone heavy.

The atmosphere in the car grew tense. Even the driver seemed to hold his breath.

"What is Hydra? Are they strong?" Alex asked, his curiosity piqued.

Fury hesitated, stumbling over his words. "Their power and influence are immense—beyond your imagination. But… let's set that aside for now. Our priority is the giant serpent in this city. We'll settle our scores with Hydra later."

Alex raised an eyebrow but didn't press further. However, he silently resolved to investigate Hydra himself. If anyone dared to come after him, they wouldn't escape unscathed.

The convoy reached their temporary base without incident. After a quick lunch, Fury brought Alex to the operations room.

Meeting the Other Superhumans

In the room, two men lounged arrogantly in chairs, their gazes scrutinizing Alex without a word of greeting. These were undoubtedly the other two surviving superhumans.

"This is the relevant information. Take a look," Fury said, handing Alex a document.

Scanning it quickly, Alex summarized: A journalist named Ethan and a gym trainer named Sandra had been targeted by a massive serpent believed to be a mythical creature called Bunagi from Korean folklore. Its goal? To become a true dragon.

"What a boring legend," Alex muttered, tossing the document onto the table.

Transforming into a dragon? Laughable!

Still, Fury added, "The serpent matches the folklore's description. It's enormous and dangerous."

Alex narrowed his eyes. "What about the journalist and the trainer? Why not take them into custody?"

Fury showed no reaction. "To avoid alerting the serpent, we've been monitoring and protecting them discreetly. So far, the serpent has been avoiding human detection."

"So, what's my role? Just wait around until it shows up?" Alex asked, frowning.

"Not quite," Fury replied. "Our intel suggests the serpent will strike tonight. We'll attempt to negotiate first. If that fails… we're ready to fight."

Alex smirked, his excitement for the hunt growing.
