Chapter 58: Chapter 57.
Chapter 57.
No one knew about the catastrophe that had just occurred on Earth. No headlines were written. No public outcry stirred. And certainly, no one realized that the superheroes who had just saved the world were now sprawled across a sofa, drinking cheap beer like ordinary people, reflecting on the chaos of the day.
But the moment someone mentioned the Ancient One's sacrifice, the atmosphere in the room shifted. A heavy silence fell, lingering like a shadow. Not a single word was spoken.
It was hard to tell how much time had passed when Captain Steve Rogers finally broke the silence. He stood from the sofa, grabbed his shield leaning against the wall, and strapped it to his back.
"Alright," he said calmly. "Now that all of this is over, I should be heading out. If something like today happens again, make sure to call me. I may not be the strongest, but I don't want to wake up one day and find out you all died while I was sitting at home, unaware."
He spoke earnestly, addressing the group, then turned to leave Tony's villa.
"Wait, Steve," Tony called out, suddenly energized. "What you just said sparked an idea. Let's talk it over first and see what you all think."
Steve paused, intrigued, and returned to his seat. "Alright, let's hear it."
"Everyone here lived through today's events," Tony began, pacing slowly.
"I'm sure you all understand the gravity of what we faced. The problem is, threats like this—interdimensional invasions—aren't going away. If Felix hadn't shown up when he did, or if the Ancient One hadn't sacrificed herself… we might not be standing here."
He paused, letting that sink in.
"The Earth isn't as peaceful as we once thought. There are Magicians, Gods, and who knows what else hiding in the shadows. Today it was Dormammu. Tomorrow it could be something worse."
Everyone sat quietly, –considering his words.
"Take –Thor, for example. A literal mythical God, walking among us. If aliens invaded tomorrow, would any of us be surprised anymore?"
Tony looked directly at Thor, who only shrugged, unconcerned.
"Tony," Steve interjected, "we get it. You've made some valid points. But what are you getting at?"
"I'm getting there," Tony said. "Remember when Nick Fury told me about something called the 'Avenger Initiative'? I dismissed it at the time. But now… I think he was onto something."
"I don't agree with Fury's reactive approach—always responding after the damage is done. I'm talking about something different. We need to be proactive. The moment danger arises, we strike with overwhelming force and resolve the crisis. We let anyone watching know that Earth is not an easy target and has its champions protecting them."
He turned and faced the group with resolve in his eyes.
"So here's my proposal, we form our own superhero organization. Independent. Not affiliated with any nation, not controlled by the U.N., not subject to politics. Our only mission—protecting Earth from outsiders."
He finished his speech and let the room settle. "That's it. I've said my piece. Who's with me, and who's against?"
Silence returned once again as everyone absorbed the weight of Tony's proposal.
Steve Rogers looked thoughtful, carefully weighing the pros and cons of the idea. He didn't speak right away.
Annie, unfamiliar with this world and still adjusting, remained quiet too. She had made her choice already, she would follow Felix wherever he went.
Thor leaned back, his beer still in hand. As the son of Odin and protector –of the Nine Realms, he didn't act out of loyalty to Earth alone. But with Jane being human, he had his own reasons to stand by and protect this world.
Felix stood there, slightly stunned. This was definitely not how he remembered the story going.
'Tony Stark refusing to join Nick Fury's Avengers, and instead planning to build his own superhero organization? Truly sublime…'
Things were taking quite the unexpected turn.
'Poor Nick Fury,' Felix thought with mild amusement.
'He's probably going to be fuming once he finds out Tony's unknowingly poaching future Avengers like Cap and Thor before the initiative is even off the ground.'
"Tony, while your proposal to form a superhero team sounds reasonable, I hope you won't mind me being blunt," Steve suddenly said after a thoughtful pause. "I don't think you're the right person to lead such an organization. You're too proud... too headstrong. Under your leadership, I fear the alliance would face more internal problems than external threats."
Tony's expression darkened for a moment at the remark, but instead of snapping back, he let out a soft sigh, showing a rare moment of restraint.
"Captain Popsicle," Tony said, forcing a smile, "if you had said that to me a few months ago, I probably would've jumped into my suit and challenged you to a fight on the spot."
He looked around the room.
"But I'm not here to make this about me. Maybe I didn't explain it clearly. This alliance I'm proposing doesn't need a single leader or a leader at all. We're not building a military unit or a company. No one is obligated to follow orders or take commands. We're free individuals with a shared goal—to protect Earth."
Tony's voice gained intensity again as he continued.
"And once the new Stark Tower is complete, I'll provide the top floor as our base of operations. I'll cover all the expenses. Gear, logistics, tech—whatever we need."
He looked at each of them, one by one.
"We're not doing this for fame, or for politics. We do it because it's the right thing. That's all."
When he finished, the room was quiet again, but this time it wasn't an awkward silence—it was the weight of realization sinking in.
Felix could sense something had changed in Tony. The battle with Dormammu had clearly left a mark on him, a deep worry that Earth would face such threats again. And rather than fall into fear or denial, Tony was trying to act.
"I agree to join."
Everyone turned as Thor, the god of thunder, spoke with a calm nod.
Felix blinked. He hadn't expected Thor to jump in so quickly. Curious, he asked, "Thor, that was a fast answer. You sure about this?"
Thor scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Well… Tony did say he would cover expenses for alliance members. And, uh, I've been on Earth for over a month now mostly living off Jane's money," Thor said sheepishly.
The room blinked in disbelief.
"I mean, I am a prince of Asgard and all, but down here, your Midgardian currency doesn't exactly recognize my title. And well, Jane's been very generous, but I'm starting to feel a little too much dependent."
Felix chuckled.
'So the mighty Thor joined Earth's first unofficial superhero alliance... because he was broke.'
Fate had a funny way of shaping history.
