Chapter 15: Chapter 14: Tony Recruits his First Minion
Tony, Howard, and a team of Stark Enterprises' private security forces, the so-called "G-men," boarded a private plane headed for the war-torn Balkans. With intelligence from Xavier's Cerebro, they had pinpointed Sage's location to a small, heavily contested village. The flight was tense, filled with last-minute briefings and equipment checks. Howard, ever the pragmatist, looked over mission plans while Tony, despite his age, was focused on absorbing as much tactical knowledge as possible.
As they neared their destination, the pilot's voice crackled over the intercom. "We'll be dropping you off five clicks outside the village. Airspace is contested, and we can't risk drawing attention."
Howard nodded and turned to the team. "Alright, listen up. We go in quietly, avoid unnecessary engagements, and extract the girl. No civilian casualties. If hostiles engage, neutralize them quickly and efficiently."
Tony added, "Remember, Sage is the priority. If we lose her, we fail our mission."
The G-men, dressed in tactical gear with state-of-the-art weaponry, nodded in understanding. As soon as the plane touched down, they moved out in coordinated precision, making their way toward the village under the cover of darkness.
The village was in ruins, signs of conflict evident everywhere—burned-out homes, wrecked vehicles, and the eerie silence of a place accustomed to violence. As they entered, they spotted armed militia patrolling the streets, their expressions hardened by years of war.
"We've got movement ahead," one of the operatives whispered, raising his rifle.
Howard motioned for silence. "We stick to the plan."
Tony, using his growing telepathic abilities, closed his eyes and reached out. He could sense Sage—a young but immensely powerful mind—hiding in the ruins of a collapsed building. He opened his eyes and pointed. "She's there."
The team moved quickly. Two operatives took out sentries with suppressed shots while the rest secured the perimeter. As they entered the rubble, they found her—thin, bruised, but with piercing, intelligent eyes that regarded them cautiously.
"Sage," Tony said softly, stepping forward. "We're here to help."
She looked at him, hesitant. "Who are you?"
"Tony Stark. And this is my father. We're here to take you somewhere safe, where you won't have to hide."
She glanced at the armed men behind them, then at Tony. "Why should I trust you?"
"Because I know what you can do," Tony replied. "And I know that out here, you're wasting your potential. Come with us, and I promise you'll never have to be afraid again."
She studied him for a moment longer before finally nodding. "Alright."
Just as they turned to leave, a siren blared in the distance, followed by shouting. The militia had discovered their presence. Howard swore under his breath. "Time to move!"
The team formed a protective perimeter as they hurried toward the extraction point. Gunfire erupted from multiple directions, forcing them to return fire. Tony grabbed Sage's hand and ran, his mind working frantically. He knew he wasn't strong enough to teleport them all out, but he focused on something smaller—a disruption.
Reaching out with his power, he sent a mental shockwave that disoriented their attackers, causing them to stumble and miss their shots. It bought them just enough time to reach the waiting plane.
As they lifted off, Tony looked down at the battlefield below, then back at Sage. "Welcome to the family."
She simply nodded, her eyes reflecting the new future ahead of her.
