Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Carter; Streets of New York
Peggy Carter, a heroine of her generation.
Even when faced with such challenges in her later years, she didn't panic; instead, she quickly accepted reality. She immediately put down her S.H.I.E.L.D. affairs in London and came to the United States for a re-examination at a hospital here. Afterward, she would resign from her position at S.H.I.E.L.D.
Even if S.H.I.E.L.D. could find the world's top experts in this field, her situation was a medical problem that could not be solved even in the 2020s, the next century, before Bucky traveled through time. Unless it involved superpowers, advanced technology, or alien technology.
Bucky knew that the Kree Empire, one of Marvel's major alien races, had come to Earth very early and experimented with Kree and human genes on Earth to create super soldiers. S.H.I.E.L.D. had a Kree corpse and used it to research healing medicines. Bucky didn't believe that S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't have similar projects anymore.
After all, S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA were inseparable; what HYDRA originally did—searching for supernatural and surreal existences, attempting to break through human limits, and allowing humanity to evolve into a higher species—S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA had always been doing.
But Peggy Carter, like Howard Stark, was very open-minded. Her life had been wonderful enough; she had experienced unforgettable love, a normal life, and a complete and happy family. She didn't need any superpowers or modifications to change her life experiences and spoil those precious memories.
Bucky genuinely admired this from the bottom of his heart, but he wouldn't envy it. He wasn't qualified, and he didn't want to. Knowing the trends of this world, he wouldn't just drift along or muddle through. He wouldn't just enjoy himself for 30 years and then close his eyes and call it a day because Thanos wouldn't arrive for another 30 years. He wanted to hold his destiny firmly in his hands. He also wasn't content with mediocrity; for him, mediocrity wasn't something he yearned for like Peggy, but something that had accompanied him for over twenty years, year after year, day after day. He only wanted excitement. Just as Sharon Carter said, he wanted to become a truly living legend.
However, Peggy's situation still made Bucky feel a bit emotional. Bucky's own examination was just a formality, just for show. Afterward, Howard went to perform an MRI on Peggy and study her condition. With the help of Howard, this super genius, Peggy's situation should improve.
And Bucky, having nothing much to do, thought that instead of practicing his speaking skills with Fury, he might as well go see the future second sister-in-law. It wasn't Bucky teasing, but this matter, when thought about carefully, was indeed quite messy. Moreover, even if something bad happened again, Bucky didn't want to be sad; there were enough things to be sad about. The wage earner who hadn't experienced true happiness for a long time before traveling through time now only wanted to be happy, not sad. Teasing a little girl would obviously make his mood better.
"Can you tell me how you became like this? Was it some mysterious experiment, a clone, or a terminator made to look like you? Oh, this is all classified information, you can't tell me, right, Officer?"
The young girl Sharon was very cheerful and open, not at all reserved with Bucky. She curiously watched Bucky, asking all sorts of questions, like a happy little bird, asking non-stop. It was hard to connect her with the heroic Agent 13 of the future. And she seemed to have only come with her aunt, whom she hadn't seen in a long time and who was feeling a bit unwell, for a physical examination, and she didn't know Peggy's true condition.
"I'm not an Officer, but the situation is a bit special, and I truly can't tell you for now. Someone will come to tell you later that everything you saw today, including my existence, cannot be mentioned to anyone."
"Is that so." Although Sharon became even more curious, she still nodded and agreed directly.
"However, you can say you met Johnny."
"Who?"
"Me, Robert Johnny Lynde, an extra, called to impersonate a guy named Bucky Barnes. They say I look a lot like him. Bucky, it doesn't sound like a proper name. Does he smack his lips when he eats?"
"You... Hahaha, you're so funny."
The young girl, still a rookie trainee, was truly fooled by Bucky for a moment, and then burst out laughing.
"Then Johnny, I'm Sharon, nice to meet you."
"Same here, Sharon... Tell me about yourself, where do you go to school?"
"You two are having a very lively chat."
They were chatting idly when, at the corner of the corridor, an old man and an old woman, both with white hair, appeared. Compared to Howard's heavy heart, Peggy smiled kindly as she looked at her niece.
"Peggy, you're here. Come quickly and tell your niece, with my friendship with Steve, wouldn't it be appropriate for her to call me Uncle?"
Of course... Peggy felt a sweet pang in her heart when her old friend mentioned Steve, but then she felt that her old friend's tone was strange.
Bucky wasn't like this before, was he? It seems amnesia has had a big impact on him...
"Peggy, I will research a plan for you as soon as possible."
Howard was still worried about Peggy's situation. He was free-spirited himself, but he cared deeply about his friends. At his age, friends might disappear at any time, and he cherished every one of them.
"Howard, don't worry about me, your matters are more important."
After a few words, Peggy left with her niece, both a bit reluctant to part. One wanted to catch up with an old friend, and the other had met a very interesting person. But Peggy knew that Howard and Bucky had very important things to do, and her current situation was not suitable for participation.
Bucky also finished his examination, left the results, and followed Howard. They arrived at his other laboratory in New York, specializing in human mechanics and engineering. Here, he would conduct some physical tests and further research on Bucky. Bucky also needed to test his body's limits for better control.
"Running speed 100 meters in 1 second, running long jump 5 meters, vertical jump height 56 meters... Right arm pull 161 kilograms, left arm pull 3 tons... Heart rate 56 beats per minute when running..."
With each physical test, Howard expressed more and more admiration. It wasn't astonishment, as he had personally created the better, more astonishing Captain America, but he still expressed admiration for Dr. Zola, the creator of this simplified version of Bucky.
Well, Howard, a genius inventor, naturally wouldn't admire Bucky's physique that much; he would only appreciate the wisdom of a genius. He would only think that being able to create a super soldier like Bucky from the blood sample of Red Skull, a failed serum modification, even if brainwashing and control were required, was enough to prove Dr. Zola's genius mind.
After completing the initial tests, Howard left; he had too many things to do. For example, the unpretentious and tedious work of being the CEO of Stark Industries, which had a market value of tens of billions. There was also his previously frightened wife to comfort and his unpromising son to discipline. What's more important now is to start investigating S.H.I.E.L.D.'s internal issues.
As for Bucky, he won't be brought to S.H.I.E.L.D. He doesn't want any actions that might provoke an overreaction from the enemy, like HYDRA blowing up S.H.I.E.L.D. after he's taken there. So Bucky will temporarily stay in this laboratory. It's an ergonomics research facility, so it has a lot of fitness equipment for data collection and a sufficiently spacious area. Bucky transformed into a gym fanatic, familiarizing himself with his body here. He worked out for three days straight.
And those three days were peaceful. Although Bucky stayed indoors, it wasn't as if no one knew he was there. On the contrary, there were S.H.I.E.L.D. agents watching 24 hours a day nearby. But there was no movement from Alexander Pierce's side; he seemed to be observing as well, not wanting to act rashly. It was like hunters treating each other as prey, patiently lurking and waiting for the other to reveal a weakness first.
And when not working out, Bucky was disassembling things. Since he had latched onto Howard Stark, the platinum-tier sugar daddy, Bucky naturally didn't stand on ceremony with him, asking him for a huge pile of mechanical tools and electronic products. And he only wanted the expensive ones: the latest electronic chips, memory sticks, and motherboards, which Bucky happily disassembled. The more advanced the disassembled items, the higher the chance of extracting even more advanced components.
Howard didn't even flinch when Bucky disassembled five of his precious collectible hunting rifles, let alone some ordinary items. With the support of the wealthy benefactor, Bucky finally disassembled the long-desired [Epic Quick Hack Component], allowing him to craft his first green excellent-grade [Quick Hack Plug-in]!
[System, craft Plug-in Target Lock, craft Plug-in Electromagnetic Short Circuit;]
[System Info: Consumed Excellent Quick Hack Plug-in 50, Rare 30, Epic 10. Crafted Green Excellent-grade Target Lock * 1, Electromagnetic Short Circuit * 1;]
Target Lock: Highlights target enemies and all their allies in your line of sight. Highlighted enemies can be scanned and Quick Hacked through obstacles. 1 RAM cost, lasts 20 seconds; 15-second cooldown;
Electromagnetic Short Circuit (Non-lethal): Deals 66 points of electrical damage per second to the target. Deals double damage to drones, mechs, robots, and other targets. Targets struck by electricity will be paralyzed. 3 RAM cost, lasts 3 seconds, 15-second cooldown;
Non-lethal: Automatically terminates when damage is about to kill the target.]
Finally, there's "magic"!
Bucky finally got his hands on the long-awaited Quick Hack Plug-ins, which is to say, "magic."
Target Lock is equivalent to a detection magic, and after detection, he can ignore obstacles and directly attack the target with Electromagnetic Short Circuit, which is lightning magic! This is even more powerful than a mage casting fireballs!
And the system's [Crafting] experience points increase based on the components consumed for crafting items. After crafting two plug-ins that required purple epic components, Bucky's [Crafting] specialty leveled up again!
Bucky also hacked into the electronic devices here in his free time over these three days, and [Hacking Protocol] also leveled up to 2.
[Character: James Buchanan Barnes;]
Level 2;
Body 8 (Athletics 7, Annihilation 7, Brawling 7);
Reflexes 8 (Handguns 7, Assault 7, Blades 7);
Technique 4 (Engineering 1, Crafting 3);
Intelligence 7 (Hacking Protocol 2, Quick Hack 1);
Cool 11 (Stealth 7, Cold Blood 1).]
As long as Crafting levels up one more time, at level 4, it will automatically unlock recipes for green excellent-quality basic firearms and armor. However, the level of a specialty cannot exceed the level of its corresponding attribute. 4 points in Technique means only 4 points in specialty. To further improve Crafting, he would need to increase Technique.
This gave Bucky a more urgent desire to level up. He was also tired of staying here, and Howard wouldn't make any big moves for a while. Bucky decided to go out for a walk.
He still hadn't properly explored New York, the jewel city of the United States. Before he transmigrated, there was a popular saying online: happy U.S., gunfights every day. The more prosperous the city, the more easily evil can breed in its shadows.
Aside from going against HYDRA, Bucky felt it was very necessary to be a street hero like Punisher, Daredevil, or Spider-Man.
New York. Brooklyn.
Bucky's original home and his good friend Steve's home were both confiscated because both were declared KIA, meaning killed in action, and neither had legal heirs. However, for a wealthy individual like Howard, who is on the same level as Batman, who bought a bank next door just to delay Superman's loan repayment, casually buying the land where their original houses stood, building an entire residential building, and then finding a unit for Bucky to live in, was merely a trivial matter.
However, the original Bucky didn't think this way. He would have preferred a penthouse luxury apartment in the Upper East Side if he had that money.
During the days Bucky was holed up in the lab, Howard also had keys sent over, so he now had a place to call his own. The apartment wasn't large, a two-bedroom unit of over 70 square meters. The bedrooms were small, but the living room was very large, somewhat like Sheldon and Leonard's apartment in The Big Bang Theory.
He took a stroll around the neighborhood surrounding the apartment. It was a bit different from Bucky's fragmented memories; there were more African Americans and quite a few Asians. In this era, racial discrimination was very severe, but African Americans were already consciously banding together to resist.
Of course, African Americans still couldn't overcome White people and couldn't gain much benefit from them. So they began to turn their attention to the more discriminated-against Asian community, starting to exclude Chinese people.
Not long after Bucky went out, he saw two individuals in a convenience store by the roadside, holding revolvers and pointing them at a Chinese owner. The owner, filled with grief yet helplessness, tremblingly pulled money from the cash register.
He wasn't too surprised by what he saw; the various news reports he encountered before transmigrating were also of this deplorable nature. Don't let African Americans constantly talk about discrimination; when they bully more vulnerable groups like Asians and Mexicans, they become even more aggressive.
Every time African Americans held protests and marches, it was always Chinese-owned shops that suffered, being smashed, looted, and set on fire. Yet, those African Americans still complained daily, saying it was their resistance to injustice.
Before he transmigrated, he used to take this as a joke. Morons always come up with brilliant ideas.
Discrimination must be fought against, but those who fight discrimination in public while discriminating in private? Go to hell.
Now, encountering such a situation, besides gaining experience, Bucky also felt an excitement and eagerness to be a hero who eliminates evil and brings peace.
Being a street hero seems pretty good, doesn't it?
But it wouldn't be good to just rush in and take out those two robbers directly.
Hmm, this is a good opportunity to try out his newly acquired abilities.
