Chapter 17: Chapter 17: First Act of Chivalry
"32 bucks? Are you trying to die, you yellow-skinned monkey!"
"Yeah! You old geezer! You yellow-skinned monkeys are the slyest; you must have hidden the money. Hurry up and take it out, or I'll blow your brains out with this gun!"
"I-I-I really don't have any more! This is the third wave this week! I really only have this much!"
Inside the convenience store, two African American men, one tall and skinny, the other short and fat, both wearing hoodies and triangular masks, pointed guns at the trembling Asian store owner. The store owner was a scrawny old man, his face etched with the ravages of time, now even more distressed and indignant, but all he could do was plead repeatedly, hoping the intruders would at least spare his life.
"Listen! We don't have time to watch you act! Hurry up and take out the money!"
"I'll count to three. If you don't give me the money, I'll shoot! One!"
However, the two robbers completely ignored the owner's pleas. They only knew that without the money, they wouldn't have any weed to smoke or any fun with the girls, and that just wouldn't do!
"No! Don't shoot! I really don't have any more money! You can take some things from the store! Ah!!!"
"Two!"
The short man, exasperated, slammed the gun butt hard on the owner's forehead, making him shriek instantly. The short man ruthlessly counted to two without a care and even cocked the hammer of his revolver.
"Hey, brother… hey!"
The tall man, however, didn't want to actually cause a death. Seeing that the short man was getting agitated, he was about to dissuade him. But then he saw a sudden burst of electric arc from the short man's body! Yet it seemed as if he had imagined it, because the arc vanished in an instant.
But the short man, without a word, suddenly convulsed and collapsed to the ground, which told him that he wasn't just high from smoking weed.
"What the heck is going on!? Hey, brother, what's wrong with you?"
The tall man, unable to figure out what was happening, was genuinely startled. He hadn't heard that this guy had any epilepsy or anything like that.
"Brother, stop messing around, get up quickly! Come on, please!"
After calling out a few times, the short man not only didn't respond but also stopped twitching, foaming at the mouth, and rolling his eyes. This made the tall man panic immediately.
"Hey, why don't you leave, I'll help you call 911."
The store owner, who had already given up hope and closed his eyes, waiting for death, said cautiously. He didn't hate these two unreasonable robbers, but that's how life was. Although he didn't know what was happening, it seemed he had escaped a disaster, and then he didn't want anyone to die in his store.
"Forget you! Old geezer! You crazy… oh no!"
The tall man was furious, but he was also truly helpless. He might as well just run! The tall man cursed and didn't leave empty-handed, snatching the few bills from the owner's hand, then ignoring his good brother on the ground, he turned and ran.
The owner finally breathed a sigh of relief…
Just then, the tall man suddenly burst with an electric arc, but it was only for an instant, making the owner also think he was hallucinating from excessive fright.
Thud!
But then he saw the tall man also convulsing and collapsing to the ground without a sound, joining his good brother.
Is there a short circuit in my store? The owner blinked, completely clueless about what was going on, but he quickly called the police. Neither the robbers nor the robbed had any idea what was going on.
And those who knew what was going on had long since left, quietly concealing their achievements and reputation.
"Hmm~, the effect is really good, it's just that the damage is a bit low, it can't even cause fatal damage to an ordinary person, but it's non-lethal anyway… and the cooldown is 15 seconds, which is still a bit long, but the area-of-effect Contagious Infection has even lower damage than this, even ordinary people can endure it…"
Bucky, who seemed to be just passing by, had actually tried his Quick Hack ability, which is "magic," for the first time. First, he used Target Lock to lock onto the two robbers, and then, feeling very strange, even though he had walked far away and was separated by several buildings, he could still see the two highlighted virtual images.
Then, he used Electromagnetic Short Circuit to take down the shorter man, who seemed to be acting more violently, and after the skill cooled down, he took down the other one. The skill was very powerful, easily subduing the enemy silently, somewhat like the feeling of 'whoever I stare at goes down.'
But Bucky also knew that these were just two ordinary people. In other situations, such as two fully armed warriors, the situation might be different.
And two was the limit. The skill cooldown was a full 15 seconds. If there was one more person, it would be 30 seconds, and the third person would have reacted by then. In that situation just now, the third person might have been scared and directly shot the store owner before running away.
That was not Bucky's intention.
In fact, Bucky could also craft area-of-effect skills, which is Contagious Infection, which can cause the target and allies within a certain range to experience extremely uncomfortable symptoms, including but not limited to headaches, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and abdominal pain.
But Contagious Infection is also non-lethal, with even less damage, and may not even cause a near-death state for ordinary people. If Bucky wants to truly subdue the enemy, he needs to finish them off.
Bucky's "Network Intrusion" is similar to a mage's, also a late-game playstyle, requiring support from Intelligence attributes, specializations, and equipment plug-ins to cause enough damage and be used frequently enough.
The current Bucky is like a level 1 mage who has just learned to cast Fireballs and Ice Bolts. The skills seem cool, but the limitations are too great.
Fortunately, the potential is huge, and it will slowly develop in the future.
In short, Bucky, after a small test, was very satisfied with the result of his first act of chivalry.
Not only did he help innocent people, but he also gained benefits himself.
It wasn't just psychological satisfaction.
There were also tangible gains—
"System Message: Defeated two armed robbers, completed daily bounty, rewarded 150 experience points, random item box (normal) *1."
These two petty thieves not only provided experience points and Quick Hack specialization proficiency, but also allowed Bucky to complete a daily quest, earning additional experience points and a random box.
Although it was just a normal-level box, which could only yield common items or a very small chance of excellent green items, opening boxes always brings a sense of anticipation.
"System Message: Opened 1 random item box (normal), obtained Locust Spicy Sausage Pizza *3;
Locust Spicy Sausage Pizza: Maximum HP +5%, if out of combat, restores 5% HP per second, effect lasts 450 seconds."
Bucky looked at the three food items obtained from the system inventory. The effect was not bad: 5% increased HP for 9 minutes, and HP recovery when out of combat.
It's just that food in Cyberpunk is always a bit bizarre, like this pizza, it's not that the brand is "Locust," but that it's actually made with locusts, with a dense layer of locusts on the pizza.
Fortunately, food within the system is consumed directly within the system and not taken out to eat.
In short, Bucky's first time as a street hero can be said to be very successful.
He was already eager to do it again.
