Chapter 63: Chapter 62: The Egghead Hero
Doctor Strange frowned, unsure of what to make of Peter's remark.
However, Peter didn't feel burdened by it.
Given Doctor Strange's character, he wouldn't kill Peter over such a minor comment.
Besides, Wanda, Vision, and Iron Man were standing behind him—they weren't exactly pushovers either.
Peter had already told Vision the method to remove the Mind Stone, and Wanda and Vision currently held him in high regard.
The worst-case scenario? Doctor Strange might just send him away.
But was that really such a bad outcome?
To be honest, Peter was even hoping that Doctor Strange would open a multiverse portal and send him off.
If he had a choice, who would willingly stay in a world where there was a fifty-percent chance of being wiped out?
His only hope was that when Doctor Strange did send him away, he'd let Peter pick the universe he was headed to.
"State your purpose," Doctor Strange said.
The Sorcerer Supreme's ability to predict the future was essentially a computation of future possibilities based on current conditions. Without prior knowledge of Thanos' arrival, even he couldn't have foreseen this outcome.
It was similar to how the Ancient One hadn't foreseen that her chosen "strongest Sorcerer Supreme" would still lose and eventually hand over the Time Stone to Thanos.
"Thanos is coming!" Peter declared.
"Thanos?" Doctor Strange was momentarily stunned before exclaiming in surprise, "The ruler of Titan? Why would he—"
Doctor Strange stopped mid-sentence as his eyes suddenly closed.
A few seconds later, he opened them again, staring at Peter with a shocked expression. "I see! He plans to gather all six Infinity Stones and wipe out half the life in the universe. Unbelievable that he would even attempt such a thing!"
Peter let out a sigh of relief.
However, the rapid shifts in Doctor Strange's emotions left him slightly puzzled.
What did that look in his eyes just now mean?
"Come in and tell me your plan," Doctor Strange said, stepping aside to gesture them forward.
The four of them entered the portal and found themselves inside the mysterious Sanctum Sanctorum.
Contrary to Peter's expectations, the Sanctum's decor wasn't as grand as he had imagined—it wasn't even as fascinating as Hogwarts in his memories.
His first impression upon entering was one of solemnity, dignity, and a hint of darkness.
This likely stemmed from the nature of sorcerers—immersed in the study of magic, they weren't particularly fond of indulging in worldly pleasures.
"Explain your plan in detail," Doctor Strange said, once everyone had settled into their seats.
Peter wasn't sure why Doctor Strange, having already glimpsed the future, still wanted him to explain, but he went over his plan once more.
"So the key players in the final battle are Thor, Hulk, and Captain Marvel, correct?" Doctor Strange noted the crucial details.
These three were capable of temporarily overpowering or even suppressing Thanos. Add to that the current presence of Wanda and Doctor Strange himself (not including Vision, who would lose his stone), and the odds of defeating Thanos were significantly boosted.
If they could gather this group, their chances of killing Thanos and thwarting his plans would skyrocket.
"Thor and Hulk are together," Peter revealed another piece of information that left Iron Man visibly startled. "So if we can find one, we'll find the other. They should currently be aboard Asgard's refugee ship, en route to Earth. Doctor Strange, can you locate them?"
Doctor Strange closed his eyes once more, carefully sensing something before shaking his head. "They're still quite far from Earth. I can't pinpoint their exact location right now."
Peter felt a twinge of disappointment.
Doctor Strange added, "Perhaps once they're closer to Earth, I'll be able to sense them."
"Who is Captain Marvel?" asked Iron Man.
"Mr. Stark, have you read DC Comics?" Peter asked in return.
Iron Man nodded.
"You can think of her as Superman," Peter explained.
Iron Man's eyes widened. "You're kidding, right? Don't tell me she's from Krypton too."
"No," Peter shook his head. "But she does possess the power to move planets, travel faster than light, survive the explosion of a star, absorb and release various forms of energy, and even nullify energy-based attacks. Among other abilities."
Iron Man was left speechless. "Alright, I'll admit it—she's basically Superman. Or, well, Superwoman."
Doctor Strange seemed somewhat surprised as well. Truth be told, he hadn't been the Sorcerer Supreme for very long, and his knowledge was far from the Ancient One's level. As a result, there were many things he wasn't yet familiar with.
(Consider this a little patch for Doctor Strange's slightly lackluster performance in Avengers: Infinity War. He was noticeably more powerful in Doctor Strange 2.)
And since Captain Marvel had left Earth long ago, it was natural that Doctor Strange didn't know of her existence.
"Where is she?" Doctor Strange asked.
Peter sighed. "I have no idea. She's probably in some galaxy protecting it from danger."
The group collectively rolled their eyes.
If he didn't know, what was the point of bringing her up?
"But Nick Fury has her contact information. He should be able to reach her!" Peter said.
At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Nick Fury had used a pager to call Captain Marvel, but by then, Thanos had already snapped his fingers with all six Infinity Stones. By the time Captain Marvel arrived, the damage had been done.
This time, however, things were different.
"Nick Fury? The former S.H.I.E.L.D. director?" Doctor Strange nodded, drawing a circle in the air with his hands.
As the glowing portal flashed, a dark egg-like figure appeared before the group.
It was none other than Nick Fury himself, wearing his signature eye patch.
Only, he wasn't quite prepared—he had a burger in his hand, mid-bite.
The sudden change of surroundings startled him, but upon spotting Iron Man among the group, he breathed a sigh of relief.
"Motherf— What do you want from me? I'm retired, just a regular old guy now," Fury grumbled, his words muffled as he bit into his burger.
Peter couldn't help but admire Fury's composure.
"Fury, we need your help to contact Captain Marvel."
"Captain Marvel?" Fury's hand froze mid-bite.
"That's right. Ms. Carol Danvers," Peter added.
"How do you know about her?" Fury asked, his gaze sharp and probing.
For what felt like the hundredth time that day, Peter found himself under scrutiny. Fortunately, he was getting used to it.
"Don't worry about how I know. The important thing is that Earth—and the entire universe—is in grave danger. We need Captain Marvel's help!" Peter declared.
"I do know her, but she's been off Earth for many years. I can't reach her," Fury said, shaking his head repeatedly.
It was clear he was trying to keep Captain Marvel's existence under wraps.
"You're not a Skrull, are you?" Peter suddenly blurted.
"Excuse me?" Fury stared at Peter, visibly startled.
"Skrull? What's that?" Iron Man's head began to ache. The name screamed "alien species," which was the last thing they needed right now in such a delicate situation.
