Chapter 44: Thompson Under Venom! The Green Goblin Arrives!
"Everything Ethan gave me is amazing~"
Gwen admired the web shooters on her wrist, unable to put down her new toy. The fact that they were a gift from Ethan Lee made her even happier.
"Never mind that, Gwen," Jessica interjected, turning her attention to Peter, who was being overpowered by Venom. "This black thing is ruthless. The nerd looks miserable underneath him. Should we step in?"
"Oh, right! Peter!"
It wasn't Gwen's fault she had almost forgotten about him.
Peter now resembled some kind of lizard-like monster—far from his usual self. It was easy to mistake him for the Lizard rather than Peter Parker.
Gwen glanced between the monstrous green lizard and the writhing black creature locked in battle. "I have no idea what happened to Peter, but we should help him get rid of that thing first."
Between the two threats, Venom—the unknown entity—seemed like the bigger problem.
"Leave it to me!"
Jessica brandished her lightsaber and charged forward. "Watch me cut this thing down!"
Sensing the incoming threat, Venom abruptly abandoned Peter, whose scaly flesh had already been torn in places. With a powerful push from its muscular legs, Venom launched itself into the air and landed several feet away, putting distance between itself and Jessica.
"Jessica Drew… the Female Knight…"
"And the Ghost Spider…"
A voice growled from within the writhing black mass.
At that moment, Thompson, the host of Venom, took control and bellowed, "You're all in on this, aren't you?! Why didn't you come to save me that day?!"
"You and Peter—you're working together, aren't you?! You left me to suffer on purpose!"
"...Uh, this one talks too?" Jessica blinked, momentarily taken aback. Then she tilted her head and asked, "Who are you?"
"I am Venom!" Thompson roared. "And I will make you suffer!"
His voice turned guttural, breaking into an eerie, incoherent hiss: "Ka…si…"
"Okay, that was… weird," Jessica muttered. But she didn't waste time.
She leaped, lightsaber raised high, and slashed down at Venom with a sharp battle cry—one that sounded a little forced.
"Haah—Split Mount Hua with all my might!"
The dark blue glow of the lightsaber swept across the night sky like a slicing curtain.
Venom instinctively sensed the danger and dodged at the last moment, slipping past the attack. With alarming speed, it lunged toward Peter once again.
It still wanted to finish Peter first!
"You think I'm just gonna take this?!"
Furious, Peter retaliated, meeting Venom head-on once more.
Green scales were ripped away, only to regrow in seconds. Black tendrils stretched and tore, only to reform just as quickly.
They clashed—again and again.
And once again… Peter was overpowered.
…After all, a losing battle is still a losing battle.
Fortunately, this time, Jessica was there. She spotted an opening and swung her lightsaber with precise timing—avoiding Peter but slashing at Venom.
The searing blade cut through the black mass with ease.
The symbiote recoiled. It wasn't that Jessica's attack wasn't strong enough—it was that the creature actively avoided the intense heat.
She struck again. And again. Several consecutive slashes.
But it was no good.
The symbiote only suffered shallow wounds, retreating and reforming without any serious harm. The strikes only tore at the outer layer, failing to reach Thompson inside. It was too fast. Too reactive.
Seeing that neither Jessica nor the other girl could break through Venom's defenses, Gwen stepped in to help.
But just then—
Her Spider-Sense flared!
On instinct, she shot a web at the edge of the rooftop and yanked herself sideways.
Ding!
A metallic object landed where she had just been standing, bouncing once.
And then—
Boom!
Fire erupted. A small, round device exploded into a shower of flames and debris.
A chilling, taunting laugh echoed through the night.
"Spider! Ho-ho-ho!"
Gwen's eyes snapped upward.
Hovering above, standing on a sleek, high-tech glider, was Harry Osborn—the Green Goblin.
He grinned wickedly.
He had not forgotten his father's dying wish: Obtain Spider-Man's blood.
Only then could he hope to cure his family's genetic disease.
"Green Goblin!"
Gwen didn't waste time with words. She raised both hands and fired two strands of webbing straight at him.
Thwip! Thwip!
The enhanced web-shooters fired at high speed. The strands latched onto the Green Goblin's glider.
Harry barely reacted.
Just as Gwen prepared to yank him down—
Two miniature missiles shot out from the front of the glider.
"Tch—!"
Gwen immediately released the webs and flipped backward, somersaulting off the rooftop.
She didn't fall—her hands shot out, clinging to the vertical surface of the building.
Two explosions rocked the air above.
Her Spider-Sense tingled again.
No danger—
Wait—
In the moonlight, Gwen's body twisted gracefully as she rebounded, flipping back toward the rooftop. Every movement was smooth, controlled, instinctive.
Then—her eyes widened.
She saw it.
She saw him.
And her fingers moved before her mind could.
She hurled a web capsule—one of the special gadgets Ethan had given her—straight toward the rooftop.
Because—
A green blade had just slashed through the web cocoon restraining Dr. Connors.
Harry didn't even bother dodging.
He sneered, swinging his arm-blade effortlessly.
Slice!
The small capsule split apart.
But in that instant—
White webbing exploded outward.
"What the—?! Damn it! Damn it!"
Harry was caught mid-air, entangled in a web cocoon.
But he was strong. He struggled violently.
Meanwhile, Connors was nearly free as well.
By the time Gwen swung onto the rooftop—
Both the Green Goblin and Dr. Lizard had broken free!
Gwen's stomach dropped.
"Not good!"
