Chapter 47: Chapter 47 Home made dinner, and an ethical question
The train ride took a while, but they eventually reached Mirko's home, as it slowly got dark.
This just made it even more apparent, that everything that had happened today, had actually been just a very little part of the day. After all, from the moment of Souta's first quest, until the end of the fight, it had been barely 20 minutes.
Souta couldn't even fully wrap his head around that. It was simply crazy, how fast a situation could escalate to such a magnitude, and then, just as fast, end again.
Upon arriving, both went to change directly, Mirko opted for a shower, while Souta just changed into some training clothes and went outside again.
On the way here, he had constantly tried to get a feel for his Quirks again, but there was nothing… and something.
While there was nothing that really felt familiar, there was something new inside of him, something he couldn't understand. Not yet, at least.
Souta didn't really know how, or where he should start with his tests, so he first did some quick stretches, and afterwards took on a fighting stance.
From there, for the next few minutes, he tried finding the limit of his current body, he at first went over certain movements to test his flexibility, to then test his endurance and strength by actually making use of his muscles and striking some dummies that stood to the far side of the yard.
The result?
He felt strong… somehow stronger than with his prior percentages of OFA, but also slower, though, that could've been just his feeling. But what had definitely changed, was his agility and dexterity.
Movements which hadn't been possible, or were hard to execute before, were now possible. And quite frankly, relatively simple.
When Souta had tested his bodies capabilities more or less, something that had taken him around 10-15 minutes, he continued with meditation, to find out what that feeling was.
A solution to find a quick answer would've been to simply take a look at the system, but call it pride, or maybe even arrogance, but Souta wanted to find it out on his own, without always relying on the system.
Everyone else had to do so, normally. He had been exempted from the process, by copying his brothers quirk before, and had also been trained by him. Something he could not do this time.
Sitting comfortably on the ground, in the middle of the yard, he tried to remove any distractions from his mind, and concentrated fully on his own body.
Souta required a moment to fully relax, but when he did so, he felt it again. Something was moving inside of him. No. Something wanted to flow through his body, but it was unable to do so.
Trying to dive deeper into his consciousness, the feeling began taking a more and more pronounced form.
And then… he finally reached it.
What Souta saw, or rather felt were a small flame, merely a spark, and next to it was an enormous egg, with slight cracks on its surface. The egg must've been at the very least twice his size, in height alone.
As Souta was getting a more and more clear understanding of what he was trying to find, Mirko appeared on the porch. She was already wearing normal relaxing home clothes, with her hair still a bit damp, and a towel hanging around her neck.
When she saw him, deeply concentrated on something, she sat down, not wanting to unnecessarily disturb him, but as the seconds passed, she began feeling something from him. And soon, she could've sworn, she saw two silhouettes appearing behind his back.
One of them, a living flame that was soaring towards the sky, the other one, an enormous shadow that seemed to completely cover the sun.
When she caught sight of them, or at least thought so, her whole body tensed, and she felt true, and utter dread. Her rabbit quirk instincts nearly screamed at her to run away, or hide somewhere, but she didn't.
Actually, she couldn't. Because in that moment, Souta opened his eyes, and for just a fleeting moment, the feeling being preyed upon spread in Mirko's entire body… before it all vanished, as if it had all been a mere illusion.
"A- are you alright, Mirko-san? You look as if you had seen a ghost just now." Souta asked worriedly, as he noticed her pale face and still trembling eyes.
This helped Mirko snap out of it again, "Yeah, sorry. I thought I had seen something just now," she paused and after taking another look at him, saw nothing wrong anymore. "So, any progress? You seemed quite down on the way back."
"Oh, did I?" Souta chuckled, before another more concerned look appeared on his face, "Honestly, I have no clue. Something happened to my quirk, but I can't fully grasp what has changed…"
She looked in thought for a moment, before she responded, "How about something home cooked for today then? I don't cook too often, but tend to do it once in a while, to prep some meals for a bit. After all, I still need to stay in shape, and just burgers won't do."
By the end, a smirk appeared on her face, but Souta could, nevertheless feel that she was simply trying to make him feel better, so he nodded in agreement.
As he watched her receding form, he could feel something rise inside of him, it felt primal, but quickly disappeared as soon as she left his line of sight. When that was the case, his body immediately calmed down.
He rubbed his temple, and finally decided to actually take a look at his system now. There was something, and he had found it, but it didn't seem ready yet. Therefore, he called up his system window.
[Name: Souta Todoroki]
[System functions: Copy and Paste, Lend]
[True Quirk: Mythical Birds +]
[Quirks: - ]
[Quirk Slots ?+1/?]
Next to his status, the quest windows, he hadn't been able to check until now, also appeared.
[Hero Quest: Hero Killer Stain]
Bonus Objective 2: Save the life of Pro hero Native
Bonus Objective 2: Cleared
Reward: 1 Quirk Slot
[Urgent Quest Activated: Hosu Incident]
Objective: Repel the attacking forces and make sure that as little civilians are hurt as possible.
Objective: Cleared
Reward: Most fitting quirk(currently existing)
Bonus Objective: Catch the true villains behind the attack
Bonus Objective: Failed
Well, the results of the quests were about as he expected them to be. Native hadn't been too severely injured, and therefore lived, and since no one knew about them directly, the masterminds had been able to escape stealthily.
The reward from the second quest interested Souta, but seeing how it was phrased, he first wanted to take a look, at what his true quirk had that plus sign for.
[True Quirk: Mythical Birds]
[Forms: Phoenix (incomplete), Roc(incomplete), ???, …]
That… was uninformative and informative at the same time. It also made it clear, that Souta needed to research a bit about this whole topic.
Souta, of course, knew what a Phoenix was, and what it often represented, but Roc was already a lot more complicated, since he hadn't heard that name before. Or maybe he did, but couldn't recall it right now.
Sadly though, not much more information was displayed, merely that both of these forms were still incomplete, and judging how the line kept going, there must be more forms available later on.
For those, he would most likely copy certain quirks, or something along those lines. One quirk, from a certain Pro hero immediately appeared in front of Souta's inner eye, 'I guess that one would indeed contribute to at least one of the forms, right?'
If he were to think a bit more deeply, then there would surely be a few more fitting quirks, but that one felt too… perfect.
When he looked back on the reward from the second quest, his mind somewhat told him, that this exact quirk would most likely be what he would receive, and while there were a few he would prefer, in his current situation it indeed was the most useful.
Not wanting to spent any more time on this, he simply willed, in his mind, to receive the reward.
[Reward being issued…]
[...most fitting quirk found.]
[Quirk 'Fierce Wings' will be added to quirk storage…]
[...True quirk 'Mythical Birds' tries to incorporate quirk 'Fierce Wings'. Proceed?]
'I was right, it seems…' Souta sighed, having this somewhat expected. '...proceed.'
[Quirk 'Fierce Wings' is now fusing with the true quirk 'Mythical Birds'…]
[Success. Quirk successfully incorporated]
It was slightly regretful to lose a useful quirk like 'Fierce Wings', but Souta was sure, that it would, in the long run, bring more benefits, if he simply added it to his 'true quirk. Another minor reason was; he really did not want such wings 24/7.
And hey, apparently, this thought worked out perfectly.
Souta didn't expect to make any more noteworthy breakthroughs today, and therefore stood up, and headed inside after brushing off the dirt from his pants.
Walking through the house, he noticed some activity in the kitchen, but didn't dwell on it. If Mirko said she would make something edible, then he believed in her. After all, it couldn't be worse, than anything he could cook.
He continued upstairs, and after getting some clean clothes from his room, headed to the shower, and properly cleaned himself up.
After about 10-15 minutes he was finished and walked out of the bathroom. He simply wore some comfortable stuff, since it would be the last night here, and there would most surely not be any training today, knowing his current situation.
Nevertheless, in the bathroom, he had once again been met with the sight of his now changed hair color, and had also realized that it was apparently now his actual hair color, due to nothing being washed out of it.
Needing to accept it, he – with his towel still around his shoulders – went downstairs again, and planted himself on one of the couches in the living room. His phone already in hand, he decided to invest the time before dinner into finding out more about such birds.
Another ten minutes later, Mirko called for dinner. Therefore, he stopped his research, put his phone back into his pocket, and went over.
As he arrived, he was met with the sight of a richly filled table. The main dish was grilled mackerel with a bunch of sides. It was nothing too complicated, but was perfect for the two of them.
"Looks good," Souta said, and sat down, mirroring Mirko on the other side of the table. The two of them put their hands together in the traditional way, "Itadakimasu!"
Both then began eating with gusto. At one point, a bottle seemed to have simply appeared in Mirko's hand, and she began drinking from it directly.
Speaking from the smell of it, it was most likely alcohol, Sake.
They had some small talk, but besides that, it was mostly quiet. Both had their own thoughts, which they simply did not share right now.
Upon finishing their meal, Souta took the initiative to clean the dishes, as a small thank you, for the meal. She appeared to appreciate it, and sat comfortably nearby.
When he was eventually finished with them, and was about to initiate a conversation with Mirko again, he noticed her lying face down on the table. She, apparently, was not that good with alcohol.
Sighing, Souta put away the towel, with which he had been drying his hands a moment ago, and went over to her chair, pulling it out carefully.
He then, tried his best to wake her up gently, and upon not getting any reaction, picked her up, as good as he could, before carrying her upstairs in a princess carry to her room.
Unknown to him, Mirko's cheeks were colored by a deep blush, and even her rabbit ears seemed to not be spared by this. Luckily for her though, his attention was on not falling down the stairs or causing her head to hit something.
Eventually, he reached her bedroom, and put her down again.
It was when he wanted to leave afterwards, that he noticed the blush on her face, that Mirko seemed somehow awake again, and was currently looking at him with a weird look. One between hesitation and hopefulness.
Before he could even begin to understand what it meant though, he was already pulled down, directly into her bed. "It is your fault, I'm feeling like this right now… you need to take responsibility… also, I think I promised a reward, didn't I?"
Her voice made it clear, she was still intoxicated with the alcohol, but that didn't change what was happening. Souta could now also fully understand what was most likely about to happen, if he didn't stop her.
But did he want to stop her?
Morally, and ethically, sure. He should stop this.. But who was Souta, he was also just another teenager, in the middle of puberty. He could also feel the same feeling from before awakening inside of him.
The feeling was also the last straw, that caused his reason to go on standby.
And so, it began...
