Chapter 24: XXIII: hero names

The following Monday, everyone was back in class. As usual, the room buzzed with lively chatter as the students waited for the teacher to arrive. The atmosphere was light, filled with laughter and conversations about the weekend. The moment the bell rang, however, the classroom door swung open, and Snipe walked in with his usual briskness.

"Good morning, everyone," he greeted, his voice steady but commanding enough to bring the chatter to an immediate halt. "Today, we're going to discuss two essential topics."

Straightening his hat, Snipe continued wiouth wasting time "First, we'll start the simulation exercises at the USJ training grounds. These will include practicing rescue operations during accidents, kidnapping scenarios, and hostage situations. Initially, this was scheduled to happen before the Sports Festival," he explained, pausing briefly, "but I decided to adjust the program a bit. It was necessary to strengthen your foundations first. Also, I understood the significance the Sports Festival held for all of you—it was your time to shine."

As he spoke, his tone shifted to something more serious. "However, this means we're behind Class 1-B when it comes to simulations. To make up for this, we'll dedicate the next ten days to an intensive training program," Snipe declared.

The students nodded in agreement, understanding the logic behind his words. Class 1-A had indeed excelled during the Sports Festival, with many of them reaching the final rounds. Their raw power and combat skills were undeniable, but they were also acutely aware of their gaps in other aspects of hero work. So far, their knowledge of rescue and crisis management had been mostly theoretical.

Snipe moved on to the second point. "Next, after these ten days, you'll begin your internships. Now, what are internships? Simply put, you'll train under the guidance of active Pro Heroes, learning directly from their field experience. These internships are offered by heroes from all across Japan who took an interest in your performances during the Sports Festival."

The class sat up a little straighter, their attention sharpened by the weight of his words.

"This is an incredible opportunity to gain real-world experience in the hero profession," Snipe continued. "You can choose from any hero who extended you an offer, even those in the Top 10 rankings. But I urge you—choose wisely." His gaze swept over the students, ensuring his advice sank in.

"On your desks, you'll find a folder listing the offers you received. You have until tomorrow to make your decision. I know it's not much time, especially for those of you with a larger number of offers, but to help, the list is ordered according to the national rankings of the heroes who contacted you."

The students immediately began searching under their desks, pulling out the folders. The room filled with the rustling of paper as everyone eagerly flipped through their lists. Snipe leaned back in his chair, giving them time to absorb the information and share it with each other.

Raiden opened his folder and froze. His eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at the sheer number of offers—4,967. His heart raced as he flipped through the names, each more impressive than the last.

The first five entries on his list left him completely stunned:

Best Jeanist

Edgeshot

Crust

Yoroi Musha

Ryukyu

The realization hit him like a wave—five of the Top 10 Pro Heroes wanted him as their intern.

As Raiden processed the magnitude of the offers, his mouth wide oped and he heard footsteps approaching from his side. Turning, he saw Mirio, his ever-enthusiastic classmate.

"Rai-kun," Mirio said with a cheerful grin, peering over at Raiden's folder. "Can I see which heroes offered you internships?"

"Mm? Sure dude, give a look," Raiden asked curiously, gesturing for Mirio to bring over a chair to his desk. Without hesitation, Mirio promptly grabbed a seat and positioned it beside Raiden. Almost immediately, another chair was brought over—this time by Nejire, who approached with a bright smile and a folder in hand. She gave a light chuckle as Raiden, noticing her intent, warmly invited her to sit as well. Unbeknownst to him, Mirio had also managed to drag Tamaki into the group.

It wasn't until all four were seated that Raiden realized Mirio's true intention: he wanted them to collectively compare the internship offers they'd received. The four of them began reviewing the opportunities, noting which offers overlapped and which were unique. Interestingly, among the top ten heroes, only All Might, Endeavor, and Mirko had extended internship invitations. The rest of the offers came from heroes outside the top rankings.

"Ne, which one will you be choosing? I was thinking of Ryukyu—I've always admired her!" Nejire asked with an affirming nod, her soft smile contrasting with the cold demeanor she had exhibited in the past. Before anyone could respond, Mirio was the first to speak up.

"This one!" he declared enthusiastically, pointing to a name on his folder. It wasn't a hero from the top ten but rather rank 27: Sir Nighteye. "He was All Might's sidekick, and I believe he can really help me refine how I use my Quirk. From what I've heard, he's a brilliant strategist," Mirio added with palpable excitement. Then, with his signature enthusiasm, he turned to Raiden and Nejire. "Which one will you choose?"

Before Raiden or Tamaki could answer, their teacher, Snipe, interjected. "Alright, you can sort that out later. For now, I know you're all excited about this, but we need to focus on the third and most pressing point. Since this isn't exactly my area of expertise, I'll be stepping aside and letting two other teachers take over," Snipe explained, standing up and moving to the side as two heroes entered the room. The anticipation among the students was palpable—they leaned forward, eager to see what was coming next.

"Are you ready?!" Present Mic's booming voice filled the room, louder as ever, but much quieter than during the entrance exam or sports festival. He strode in confidently, followed by the ever-charismatic Midnight, who wore her iconic hero suit—a form-fitting outfit that revealed her curves tastefully without crossing the line. Together, they took center stage, their commanding presence impossible to ignore.

"Today, we're tackling something that will define your hero careers for the rest of your lives—or at least for a significant part of it," Midnight began with her usual flair. "You may have already given it some thought, but today, we're going to make it official. That's right, we're talking about your code names—your hero names!"

The students erupted into murmurs and hushed conversations. Excitement and nervousness were written all over their faces as they realized the moment they had been waiting for had finally arrived. Midnight raised a hand to quiet them down, and Present Mic's unmistakable voice boomed through the classroom once more.

"First off, these are technically temporary names," he explained, his tone slightly more serious, "but don't take this lightly. More often than not, the names you choose here will stick—becoming the ones the public recognizes you by for the rest of your careers," Midnight elaborated, her gaze sweeping over the class.

Present Mic grinned and leaned forward dramatically. "So, yeah, we're here to help with the creative part—and to make sure no one ends up with something ridiculous, like 'Baby Hero,'" he said, emphasizing the word "baby" with exaggerated flair.

The students immediately got to work as Present Mic handed out small whiteboards to everyone. The classroom's chatter diminished, replaced by a focused silence as each student concentrated on crafting their hero name. Raiden stared at the blank whiteboard in front of him, his mind a storm of indecision.

This wasn't a new topic for him—he'd thought about it countless times since childhood. Back then, his ideas had been ridiculously derivative: "The Allmighty," "The Endeavorer," and other blatant tributes to existing pro heroes. Those names had been fueled by naive admiration and a lack of understanding of his own Quirk. But things were different now. He knew who he was, what he could do, and more importantly, who he wanted to be.

"Do I really look like a big cat?" he mused, briefly entertaining the idea. But the thought felt hollow, and he dismissed it almost immediately. Being named for his appearance or powers didn't sit right with him. "The Psychic Hero? The Telekinetic Hero? The Psycho? " He visibly shuddered at the last suggestion. No, none of those felt right. They lacked depth, connection—any sense of personal meaning, and heck he wanted something cool.

Raiden's mind wandered back to his life two years ago. It wasn't like he had died and come back to life, but waking from a coma had felt like a rebirth of sorts—a second chance. A new beginning. "This is a new me," he thought, the words echoing in his mind.

"New? the hero," he muttered under his breath, the sound so faint that no one around him noticed. Slowly, his thoughts began to coalesce. A new opportunity. A second chance to be the person he had always wanted to become.

"New me," he repeated in his mind. He stared at the words as he scribbled them onto the whiteboard. Something clicked, but it still didn't feel complete. Experimenting, he flipped the words: "Me + New." He squinted at the phrase, erased the "N," and rewrote it as "Meew." It looked odd, awkward even, so he removed the extra "E," leaving just one word: "Mew."

He leaned back and stared at it. It was close—so close—but still incomplete. There was something missing, something crucial that would make it resonate. The name was there, tantalizingly close, but not yet perfect. What's more, for some reason, He felt a flicker of annoyance reading Mew, but let the idea simmer for a moment longer.

Beside him, Nejire raised her hand with a bright, cheerful exclamation. "Ne, ne, teacher, I finished my name!" Mirio immediately followed, grinning broadly. "Teacher, I'm done too!" Their enthusiasm was infectious, and soon, other students began to signal that they had completed their work as well.

"Excellent!" exclaimed Nemuri, stepping forward with a pleased smile. "Now we'll begin with the—" Before she could finish, Present Mic's booming voice cut through, overflowing with energy. "The code name presentations! Hado-san, you're up first!" he announced, gesturing enthusiastically.

Nejire beamed as she walked to the front of the class, whiteboard in hand. She turned it to face her peers, revealing her chosen name. The room buzzed with murmurs as everyone processed what they saw.

"Nejire-chan?" Nemuri asked, her tone tinged with concern but still warm. "Are you sure you want to go with your actual name?"

Nejire nodded confidently, her smile unwavering. "Yes, I'm sure. It's me—the person I want to be as a hero. And I think the '-chan' at the end adds a cute vibe," she explained with a soft giggle.

Raiden, recalling their conversation the previous Friday, understood that her decision wasn't just about the name—it was about embracing herself fully.

The next turn was Mirio's. He strode to the front with his signature grin, holding his whiteboard high. "Lemillion!" he announced proudly. "Because I want to save a million people!"

"Oh, nice name! Simple and profound!" Nemuri praised, clapping lightly.

"Yeah, awesome!" Present Mic added with his usual enthusiasm.

Following Mirio was Rei, the tall and timid boy. He stepped forward hesitantly, holding his board close to his chest before revealing it to the class. "The Vibration Hero: Rift," he mumbled, barely audible.

"OOOH, Cool!" Present Mic practically yelled, his excitement lighting up the room.

The presentations continued one after another, each student stepping up with confidence to reveal their carefully thought-out hero names. First was Taro, who announced, "The Web Hero: Silkshade."

"Oh, elegant! Good choice," Nemuri complimented, nodding approvingly.

Next came Tamaki, who, despite being gently pushed by Mirio, stood a little nervously. He held up his whiteboard, revealing his chosen name. "Suneater," he said softly.

"OOOH, wonderful!" Present Mic shouted with his signature enthusiasm, clearly impressed by the simplicity and power of the name.

Hana followed suit, presenting her name with a bit more haste. "The Spring Hero: Bloomblade," she said quickly before retreating back to her seat. Nemuri clapped her hands in encouragement, smiling warmly. "This is going wonderfully!" she exclaimed, clearly pleased with the flow of names.

Then it was Yuyu's turn. She walked confidently to the front, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "The Electric Hero: Voltarrow!" she declared, her voice filled with energy and pride as she showed her whiteboard to the class.

"OOOH, electrifying!" Present Mic shouted, his excitement matching Yuyu's. It was clear that the name had made a strong impact on everyone in the room.

Ichiri followed next, practically bouncing with energy as he jumped forward. "The Blunt Hero: Hammerstrike!" he shouted, not even waiting for the teacher's reaction before heading back to his seat.

The two brothers, Nichiri and Sanri, followed soon after. Nichiri presented himself with a confident grin. "The Sharp Hero: Bladeclash," he said, his voice steady and sure. The name was clearly one they had all agreed upon as a group, and it felt perfectly in tune with the other names.

Finally, Sanri stepped forward, holding up his board with a steady hand. "The Spear Hero: Spearstrike," he announced proudly. It was clear that the brothers had spent time together choosing their names, and each one had a solid, unshakeable presence.

Now, with everyone else having presented, it was Raiden's turn. He had spent what felt like an eternity wrestling with his thoughts, but now, as he walked confidently toward the desk, the weight of the moment settled over him. He was ready.

As he stood in front of the class, he looked down at his own whiteboard, his fingers gripping it a little too tightly. "It's a play on words," Raiden explained, looking up at the class with a small, almost nervous smile.

Then, with a deep breath, he revealed his hero name:

"The Psychic Hero: MEWTWO.
