MHA: Reborn with Magneto's powers

Chapter 12: Chapter 10:Evaluations and Adjustments

Ochako had blinked at him in surprise, looking slightly awkward due to his questions.

"That's… a lot of specific things to answer right now," she admitted, rubbing the back of her head sheepishly. "Maybe we can talk about it after the test?"

Ryoma noted her reaction. It wasn't hostility, nor was it outright reluctance—just surprise. It was likely the first time anyone had shown such genuine curiosity about the mechanics of her Quirk, rather than just acknowledging it at face value.

Still, she had readily agreed to answer him later, which was good enough for now.

He nodded. "Alright."

With that settled, their attention shifted back to the test just in time to see Midoriya stepping up for his turn.

Ryoma noticed Ochako was concentrating at Midoriya, seemingly worried about him.

Then, Ryoma overheard a conversation unfolding between Tenya Iida and Katsuki Bakugo.

"Midoriya isn't doing very well," Tenya noted, watching the green-haired boy with mild concern.

"Well, duh. He's a quirkless runt," Bakugo scoffed dismissively, his arms crossed.

Ryoma's eyes slightly narrowed at the statement.

"Quirkless?" Iida repeated, sounding surprised. "So you haven't heard about his feat during the entrance exam?"

Bakugo turned to him with an irritated frown. "Huh?!"

Ryoma frowned slightly.

'Something is wrong here...'

Like many others, he had seen Midoriya obliterate the massive zero-pointer. The sheer force of the attack had been absurd, beyond anything a typical student could produce. And yet… Bakugo, who seemed to know Midoriya personally, claimed he was quirkless?

That contradiction didn't sit right with Ryoma.

And the more he thought about it, the more suspicious things seemed.

Up until now, Midoriya had underperformed in every test. His grip strength, long jump, and other activities had been subpar, barely reaching the level of an average student. If he truly possessed a powerful Quirk, why wasn't he using it?

Ryoma almost overlooked a crucial detail.

Midoriya had destroyed the zero-pointer during the entrance exam with a single punch. Yet, in doing so, he had completely shattered his own arm.

'So this guy was born with a super-strength Quirk… but his body wasn't naturally built to handle it?'

That contradiction didn't make sense. A Quirk as powerful as that should come with the physical durability to support it—or at least some form of adaptation. Yet Midoriya's body seemed incapable of withstanding his own power.

His thoughts were interrupted by the test result.

"46 meters.", the teacher announced.

Deku with a shocked face:"Huh…but I was trying to use it…".

Before anyone could react, Aizawa stepped forward. His wild hair lifted slightly, his piercing red-glowing eyes locking onto Midoriya. The "scarf" he wore unraveled in an instant, binding around the boy with precision.

"I erased your Quirk."

(Then Aizawa scolded Deku just like in the canon).

Midoriya attempted a second time but now he concentrated the One For All's power only to his index finger to fling the pitch ball without breaking his entire arm.

The device showed the new result: 705.3m

"I…can still move." Midoriya tearing up a bit, clenching his broken finger.

"This kid…", Aizawa with a surprised face.

"Woo! Great job Midoriya.", Ochako cheered happily.

"His finger appears to be swollen, thinking back to the entrance exam…what a strange quirk…", Tenya commented.

"What the hell? Explain yourself Deku!!!", Bakugo shouted out loud and dashed at him.

But he was stopped by Aizawa's cloth weapon.

"Stop using your quirk already. I'm getting dry eyes over here!", Aizawa said in annoyance.

The rest of the class watched with a mix of shock and intrigue.

'That sucks, considering his quirk is so awesome!!', many of them thought.

After a few more activities, the test ended and Aizawa began to announce the results.

"Also, I was lying about expulsion."

Deku, Ochako and Tenya stared in confusion.

"That was a rational deception meant to bring the best in all of you.", Aizawa with a small smile.

"WAAAAAA?!", the three screamed in union.

"Well of course it was a lie, didn't take much to figure that out—",Momo told them and smirked at Ryoma.

She turned toward Ryoma, raising an eyebrow and teasing: "Unlike Number 1 over here."

Ryoma sighed, shaking his head in defeat. "Yeah, yeah, you win this one."

But his attention soon drifted back to Midoriya.

The green-haired boy sat on the ground, holding his injured finger tightly, his body still trembling from exertion.

Ryoma exhaled through his nose, his interest fading.

'Such a powerful Quirk… yet wielded by someone constantly at risk of crippling himself.'

He shrugged. 'Not worth my attention anymore.'

The results:

Top 1: Ryoma Kurogane

Top 2: Momo Yaoyorozu

Top 3: Shoto Todoroki

Top 4: Katsuki Bakugo

...….

Top 20: Izuku Midoriya

After the Quirk Apprehension Test, the students returned to class, most of them exhausted but relieved that Aizawa's threat had been a bluff. Once everyone settled in, Aizawa dismissed them for a short break before the next set of activities.

Ryoma took this opportunity to continue his "interview" with Ochako.

He took about his notebook and pen, turned to her and wasted no time getting to the point.

"So Uraraka, about your Quirk," he started.

"How exactly does that work? Is it an energy-based ability? A gravitational manipulation? Or is it something else entirely?"

Ochako blinked at him, momentarily taken aback by how direct he was. She scratched her cheek sheepishly before giving him a small grin. "Man, you're really curious about this, huh Kurogane?".

Ryoma simply nodded and waited for her answer.

Ochako let out a small laugh before gathering her thoughts. "Okay, so, my Quirk is called Zero Gravity. When I touch something with all five fingers, I can cancel out its weight, making it float." She demonstrated by lightly tapping her desk with all five fingers—though, of course, she didn't actually activate her Quirk. "But if I float too much stuff or hold the effect for too long, I start feeling sick."

Ryoma nodded. He already knew the basics, but now he wanted to dig deeper.

"So you don't actually reduce an object's mass—just its weight, correct? Meaning, if you tried to throw something heavy, it wouldn't necessarily move any faster just because it's floating."

Ochako tilted her head, considering. "Uh… yeah, I think so! Like, if I lift a big rock, I still have to push it to make it move. It's not like it suddenly loses its inertia or anything."

Ryoma narrowed his eyes slightly. "Then that means your Quirk manipulates an object's interaction with gravity rather than its physical properties."

Ochako blinked. "Uh… yeah? I think?" She laughed nervously. "I never really thought about it like that. I just kinda… y'know, use it!"

Ryoma tapped his pen to the table slightly. That was incredibly inefficient. Perhaps it was too technically complex for her.

"Have you ever tried applying your Quirk selectively? Like, can you choose to make only a part of an object weightless instead of the whole thing?", he changed the question.

Ochako pursed her lips. "Mmm… no, not really. It's kinda all or nothing. If I touch it with all five fingers, the whole thing floats."

Ryoma nodded, filing that information away.

"Have you tested the limit of your ability? The maximum weight you can lift at once?"

Ochako brightened up at that. "Oh! Yeah, my limit is around three tons. Any more than that and I start feeling sick real fast.

"Impressive.",Ryoma said, "And what happens when you reach your limit?Does the effect weaken, or does it just stop working altogether?"

Ochako grimaced. "Oh, it definitely stops working. And then I get super dizzy and feel like throwing up." She sighed dramatically. "I really need to work on my stamina…"

As Ryoma processed Ochako's answers, another voice joined the conversation.

"You have quite the inquisitive mind, Kurogane!" Tenya Iida declared, his posture rigid as always. He adjusted his glasses with a sharp motion. "Your curiosity about Quirks is admirable. However, I must remind you that it is impolite to bombard someone with so many technical questions!"

Ryoma turned to him, unfazed. "She agreed to answer."

"Yes, well," Tenya cleared his throat, "it is still important to consider how much you pressure others. Uraraka, are you comfortable with this interrogation?"

Ochako, caught between the two, laughed awkwardly and waved her hands. "Oh! No, no, it's fine! I mean, yeah, it's a lot of questions, but I don't mind! It's kinda cool to think about my Quirk like this!"

Tenya nodded, satisfied. "I see. In that case, I shall also partake in this discussion!"

Ryoma raised an eyebrow but didn't object.

After several more questions, Ochako seemed to be absolutely tired mentally and physically, she finally called for a time's up, unable to continue with the curiosity of 2 intellectuals.

"Interesting!" Tenya crossed his arms. "That would mean your Quirk primarily influences gravitational attraction rather than negating mass itself."

Ryoma added: "That's what I said earlier."

"Ah! Yes, you did!" Tenya nodded. "You seem quite knowledgeable about physics, Kurogane!"

Ryoma shrugged. "I know a thing or two."

Tenya hummed in approval. "A logical mindset is crucial for a hero! Understanding the fundamental mechanics behind Quirks allows for strategic thinking in battle!"

Ochako let out a small sigh: "Man, you two are way too smart for me. I just use my Quirk and hope for the best."

"Thanks for your time and the information, Uraraka.", Ryoma displayed his politeness.

"O-okay, You're welcome.", Ochako replied, although she was tired, she still showed her kindness to readily help anyone.

"Kurogane, go outside the class with me for a minute. We need to talk about your Hero Costume request.", Aizawa called out Ryoma.

Ryoma raised an eyebrow but complied.

Aizawa holding a folder in hand, skimmed the page before reading aloud, his tone flat but laced with mild exasperation.

"The support company handling student costumes sent a notice regarding your request. They said—"

Aizawa adjusted the paper and continued, "'We regret to inform you that we are unable to fulfill Ryoma Kurogane's specifications due to the extreme complexity, high cost, and military-grade nature of the design. His requested costume more closely resembles advanced technology combat armor than standard hero attire. We kindly ask him to submit a revised design that aligns with traditional hero costume standards due 6pm today. '"

Closing the folder with a snap, Aizawa gave Ryoma a look. "Care to explain why you're planning to dress like a one-man army machine?"

Ryoma crossed his arms, tilting his head slightly. "I see… so they couldn't handle it," he murmured, more to himself than to Aizawa.

"More like they won't," Aizawa corrected. "This is a school, not a weapons development lab."

Ryoma remained thoughtful. A suit composed of ordinary reinforced fabric wouldn't provide the same level of utility or protection as the high-tech armored design he had submitted.

To him, it was a logical request—practical, efficient, and tailored to his abilities and his quirk.

"So even the prestigious Yuuei has financial limits it can't overcome huh, sensei? What happened to "Plus Ultra"?", Ryoma said sarcastically.

Aizawa sighed, rubbing his temples. "Look, I get that you want something practical and protective. But Yuuei isn't going to give you a multi-million yen military-grade armor. The company has a budget, and they're making suits for every student, not just you. So, they need something reasonable."

Ryoma remained silent for a moment before finally speaking. "I don't intend to make something flashy, but my Quirk works best when I can control magnetic materials. And a spandex or a cosplay ain't gonna fit the criteria."

Aizawa raised an eyebrow. "Then simplify it. Do those Pro Heroes who wear standard reinforced fabric with minor support gadgets complain that they don't have high-tech armor to protect them?"

Ryoma exhaled through his nose, clearly not satisfied with the compromise but understanding the constraints. "Fine. I'll revise the design, sir."

"Good. Keep it within reason, otherwise, you'll be fighting in sports uniform. " Aizawa said.

'Well, before 6pm….a generic suit with some armor plates then, hmmm….', Ryoma remembered something.

'I might end up either looking goofy or quite cool. But I'm running out of time for options so eh, why not?'

The next day in school, in the morning there were normal classes. At lunchtime, students ate top notch food cooked by Cook Hero: Lunch Rush, whose weird alien robotic appearance made Ryoma want to ask a question about it badly...but he decided not to, for the sake of his right to have lunch in school.

Afternoon class: hero basic training. All Might, the number 1 hero of Japan walked to class 1-A with his friendly but energetic and mighty greeting:

"I AM HERE—COMING THROUGH THE DOOR LIKE A NORMAL PERSON!!!"

Then he gave a short introduction to today's activity: battle training. He clicked a remote to open a series of shelves containing the hero costumes of the students from the classroom's wall.

"After you change your costume, come out in ranking order to ground beta!", All Might said

""""OKAY!!"""", the class yelled in excitement.

"Looking good is very important ladies and gentlemen! Look alive now!! Because from today on….You're all heroes!!!!", All Might exclaimed as he witnessed the students walking to him, all suited up.
