A Whisper in the Fog

Jack stood at the edge of the Thames, the water black under the pale moonlight.

The body had been perfect.

Too perfect.

His fingers ran along the dried blood beneath his nails, his mind replaying the details. The wounds were identical to his own work. The blood splatter, the message carved into the flesh—a mirror of his signature.

And that was the problem.

No artist paints the same brushstroke twice.

His lips curled.

Moriarty and Holmes had lied.

But why?

Jack closed his eyes, inhaling deeply.

The air smelled of damp stone, rotting wood, and something else.

Something ancient.

His eyes flickered open. The shadows shifted around him, stretching unnaturally.

A voice, smooth and teasing, drifted from the darkness.

"You suspect them."

Jack didn't turn. "Of course."

A chuckle.

"They think they can outwit you."

Jack smirked. "Let them believe it."

Silence.

Then, the voice whispered—

"Then what will you do, Ripper?"

Jack's crimson eyes gleamed.

"I'll let them think they've won."

A pause.

Then, laughter—low, hungry, amused.

Jack turned, but the shadows were empty.

Still, the presence lingered. Watching. Waiting.

And Jack welcomed it.

The Hunt Begins

Holmes felt the weight of Jack's gaze long before he saw him.

It was an instinct—like prey sensing a predator.

He sat at the Baker Street residence, his fingers steepled. Across from him, Moriarty poured himself a glass of wine, his expression unreadable.

"You felt it too, didn't you?" Holmes murmured.

Moriarty swirled his drink. "Jack knows."

Holmes exhaled. "How certain are you?"

Moriarty smirked. "Let's say I'm willing to bet my life on it."

Holmes gave him a sharp look.

Moriarty only chuckled.

Then, a knock at the door.

Watson entered, his expression tense.

"There's been another murder."

Holmes and Moriarty stilled.

Jack was supposed to believe their deception.

So why was another body turning up?

Unless…

"He's testing us," Moriarty murmured.

Holmes stood. "Then we must play the game carefully."

Moriarty downed the last of his wine.

"Oh, detective. That's the only way I play."

A Message in Blood

The crime scene was a grotesque masterpiece.

The body was displayed deliberately.

Hung upside down from a gaslight post, arms spread like a marionette, eyes gouged out. Blood pooled on the cobblestones, forming a pattern.

Holmes knelt, his sharp gaze taking in the details.

The cuts were different. Slightly.

Intentional.

Jack was leaving them a message.

Moriarty traced a gloved finger along the bloodied pavement, lips curving.

"Clever."

Holmes glanced at him. "You see it too."

Moriarty nodded.

The blood had been arranged into a single word.

"Liar."

Holmes exhaled through his nose. "Well, that settles it."

Moriarty straightened. "Indeed. The game has changed."

Holmes met his gaze.

And they both knew—

Jack wasn't hunting the streets anymore.

He was hunting them.

Jack knows about the deception, but instead of confronting Moriarty and Holmes, he's playing his own game—testing them, hunting them. The tension is rising, and soon, the introduction of supernatural forces will become more apparent as we lead into Chapter 16.
