Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Negotiations and Revelations
Victor did not set the little girl down, but continued to hold her as he followed Mark through the corridors of the Lighthouse.
Mark said nothing about this breach of protocol. While ordinary Dust People were usually not allowed to enter the lighthouse meeting hall, extraordinary circumstances called for extraordinary measures.
Victor and Bai Yuekui were undoubtedly the most extraordinary visitors today.
The little girl remained perfectly well-behaved throughout their trip. She made no noise or attempts to escape his arms, content to rest quietly against his chest while gazing around with wide, curious eyes.
As one of the Dust People, she had never been allowed into the inner sanctum of the Lighthouse. Every gleaming surface and polished corridor was a wonder to behold.
Soon they arrived at the Lighthouse Council Chamber.
The same officials from the previous meeting remained gathered inside, their expressions ranging from curiosity to barely concealed hostility when they noticed Victor carrying a Dust child.
Several of the attendees frowned disapprovingly, while others, especially Charles, showed open disgust, as if observing something offensive.
"Guests from the surface," Charles announced with barely contained disdain, "this is the Lighthouse's governing chamber. Please refrain from bringing irrelevant personnel into such sacred spaces."
Victor nodded thoughtfully, his expression grave. "You make an excellent point. Irrelevant personnel really shouldn't be in places like this."
Seeing what he interpreted as Victor's reasonable response, Charles felt a surge of satisfaction. He immediately glanced at the city guards stationed outside and prepared to signal them to escort the child away.
But before the guards could move, Victor flashed across the chamber with impossible speed and appeared directly in front of Charles.
The kick that followed was delivered with precise force.
Charles immediately flew backward, sailing through the doorway with mathematical precision before crashing into the corridor wall outside the chamber. His head lolled to the side as consciousness left him completely.
The chamber doors closed automatically behind him with a soft click, sealing the disturbance away.
"Perfect," Victor said with genuine satisfaction, his smile bright and innocent. "Now all nonessential personnel have been removed."
The remaining Lighthouse officials finally processed what had happened, their faces showing varying degrees of shock and disbelief.
When City Lord Morgan witnessed Victor's casual assault of his eldest son in front of the entire assembly, anger flashed briefly across his weathered features.
But the anger lasted only a moment.
The enemy was just too powerful. From his observations, Bai Yuekui alone had enough power to destroy the entire Lighthouse. This man's abilities were probably no less formidable than theirs.
He could not afford to antagonize such dangerous individuals.
Swallowing his anger and paternal instincts, City Lord Morgan forced his expression into a mask of diplomatic calm.
"My friends," he said, his voice betraying none of his inner turmoil, "may I inquire as to the purpose of your visit?"
At the moment, his primary objective was to remove these walking disasters from his domain as quickly as possible. The lighthouse simply couldn't survive prolonged exposure to such volatile guests.
Victor moved the little girl into a more comfortable position in his arms. "I think Mark should have explained my intentions during his mission briefing?"
"Are you really just here to buy Dawn armor?" Morgan asked skeptically.
According to Mark's report, Victor had indeed expressed interest in acquiring several gravity body suits. However, Morgan found it hard to believe that beings of such immense power would go to such lengths to obtain equipment that was of no practical value to them.
Victor shrugged casually. "That is certainly one goal. I'm also curious about your Clotho system and would like access to your database to research information about the Lord of Light and Shadow."
A flash of surprise crossed City Lord Morgan's eyes when he heard this revelation.
He knows about the Clotho system as well?
It seemed that these surface dwellers had far more knowledge about the Lighthouse than he had expected.
Mark and the other officers exchanged puzzled glances. While they were familiar with the Lord of Light and Shadow as the deity worshipped by Charles' religious organization, none of them had ever heard of something called the "Clotho System.
But judging by the City Lord's expression, such a system clearly existed somewhere within the Lighthouse.
Morgan considered the request for several long moments before finally nodding. "Very well. I agree to your terms, but I need to know what you intend to offer in exchange."
"Let me make it clear from the outset that gold, silver, and precious stones are of no value to us.
Of course, since this was a negotiation, nothing would be given without adequate compensation.
However, City Lord Morgan was only going through the motions. He didn't seriously expect Victor to offer anything of real value in return.
Victor's next words, however, struck the assembled officials like a thunderbolt thrown into still water, causing massive ripples of shock.
"Of course I understand your position," Victor said, gently pinching the little girl's rosy cheek as he spoke with deliberate casualness. "Tell me, what would you consider fair compensation for a method of permanently eliminating the Pole Devourers?"
"What?!"
As soon as the words registered, City Lord Morgan shot to his feet with such force that his chair toppled backward. Everyone in the room stared, eyes wide as saucers.
Before Morgan could formulate an answer, Dr. Carrie immediately interjected with a vehement denial, "Impossible! Absolutely impossible!"
"Pole Devourers cannot be destroyed permanently!"
The other officials nodded in emphatic agreement. In decades of surface operations, no one had ever succeeded in permanently eliminating the creatures.
The fundamental inability to truly kill Pole Devourers had become accepted doctrine among virtually everyone aboard the Lighthouse.
"I can personally attest to the truth of Mr. Victor's claim!"
Mark stepped forward, his voice filled with absolute conviction. "I saw it with my own eyes. After Mr. Victor destroyed the Pole Devourers, they dissolved into pools of black liquid, leaving only dried bone structures behind. Even after a considerable amount of time had passed, none of the creatures revived."
Upon hearing this testimony, the assembled officials recalled that such details had actually been mentioned in Mark's earlier mission report. They had simply dismissed these claims as exaggerations because of the seemingly impossible nature of his other observations.
Now, upon reconsidering the evidence, if this man could indeed fly through the sky on a sword, then perhaps the permanent elimination of the Pole Devourer was not beyond the realm of possibility.
With this realization, City Lord Morgan slowly returned to his seat, his expression changing to one of intense interest.
"If you can truly provide a method for the permanent elimination of the Pole Devourer," he declared solemnly, "I would be willing to trade several gravity body suits for such knowledge!"
The fact that he was willing to part with several units of the Lighthouse's most advanced equipment showed how invaluable he considered this information.
Victor immediately began to explain the fundamental weaknesses of the various classes of Pole Devourers.
He was not worried about possible treachery in these negotiations. With his current level of power, such considerations were irrelevant.
Each person in the chamber took down Victor's words with meticulous care, afraid to miss even the smallest detail that might prove crucial.
Soon, Victor had completed his comprehensive review of the Pole Devourer's vulnerabilities and elimination techniques.
The assembled officials remained speechless for a long time, struggling to process the implications of what they had learned.
Victor waited patiently, giving them time to absorb the revolutionary information.
Finally, City Lord Morgan spoke again, his voice carefully measured, "Regarding the information you've provided, I will immediately dispatch teams to verify its accuracy. However, this process will take some time to complete properly."
"For now, I'll escort you to our database system. Of course, if you'd prefer to examine the Clotho system first, that can be arranged as well."
As Victor had expected, City Lord Morgan showed no inclination to betray, not because of any moral considerations, but because he lacked the power to successfully deceive such formidable opponents.
However, an independent verification of Victor's claims remained necessary before any final agreements could be reached. The most efficient approach would be to send teams to locate surface Pole Devourers and test the proposed methods of elimination firsthand.
Fortunately, given the current abundance of creatures roaming the wasteland, this verification process shouldn't take too long.
Victor nodded in agreement. "Let's examine the Clotho system first. I am more curious about that particular installation at the moment."
"Very well. Please follow me."
City Lord Morgan rose from his position and moved toward the chamber exit. As he passed the city's defense commander, he quietly gave instructions, "Send several teams to the surface to test the viability of the Pole Devourer elimination methods.
Since verification was necessary, he naturally preferred to use personnel he trusted completely. The City Defense Force was the unit he trusted the most.
"Understood, sir!"
