Chapter 139: Hidden Talent
Hidden Talent
Christopher watched the remains of the goshawk descend the mountain while still engulfed in blue flames and just hummed before continuing his climb.
The goshawk served as a good foe to train his ranged abilities as that was another area he was lacking in.
Most people had a specialization, and Christopher was good in close range. But he wasn't satisfied with that, especially since he had an arsenal of skills and abilities. He wanted to become Jack-of-all-trades, and he had the tools at his disposal to do so, he just needed to put in the effort.
Still, his use of the bow could be considered to be rudimentary, but that's only because the goshawk didn't need anything greater to be dealt with.
Again, Christopher's aim in all this was to improve himself in all the areas he was lacking and improve his foundation which could be considered to be shaky. So he had no intention of using anything more than the required amount when dealing with an enemy.
After a while of climbing, Christopher reached a ledge and pulled himself up. He was still some ways away from scaling the mountain, but he had made decent progress, a little bit over halfway.
With no need to rest, Christopher continued to proceed forward and calmly deal with whatever came his way. Due to his refusal to end the fights quickly, quite some time passed, but that was fine.
The Hidden Realm didn't seem to have a day-night cycle as it was daytime all the time. So it was difficult to tell what the time was. Still, Christopher had judged it to be near evening time by earth standards.
The mountain was crawling with all sorts of abominations. Many were visible and even more were unseen stalkers waiting for unfortunate prey.
If one looked at the mountain chain from a distance, they wouldn't be able to tell much. But when they scaled it themselves, they'd realize just how harrowing it was.
This wasn't a region where there was a clear distinction between beasts and their strengths. The entities here were unique and harrowing, and if one wasn't careful and didn't know what they were doing, they could only die.
More than once, Christopher witnessed some of the stronger beasts being consumed by monsters weaker than them, but because of the insidious abilities they possessed, they could only die in agony.
One of the ones that etched itself into his memory was seeing a large white ape trying to grab a fruit from what looked like a vine growing on the side of the mountain. But before it could grab the fruit, icy blue pollen was blown into its face and it inhaled some.
The ape tried to retreat but fell to the ground in agony, then struggled and writhed on the ground for a while before going still, and then pale blue flowers started blooming all over its body until it was completely covered. After that, the vine extended a tendril and pulled the body closer where even more vines emerged and covered it before slowly digesting the poor beast.
Christopher watched this scene in mute silence, the only reason he wasn't detected being his mask. Which he took advantage of this as he burned the vine as well as the corpse to ashes after he watched the display completely.
There were many more examples, like how a white snake was overrun and devoured by a tide of blue beetles. Two beasts were fighting each other before suddenly freezing and then being devoured by a formless figure, and so on.
Christopher simply moved silently, taking the initiative to pick fights as despite being appalled by the various scenes, he remained steadfast and moved to accomplish his goal.
And he was accomplishing quite a bit indeed.
Christopher considered himself to be fairly average at his base and thought that most of what he possessed when it came to his combat ability was a result of his Dimension and the system. Which was true, mostly.
What wasn't true was that he had no talent. The truth was that Christopher had an extremely high comprehension speed. Scary in fact.
As he fought different creatures that put him into different precarious situations, Christopher was forced to adapt and respond differently each time as well. It was the start, but his unsteady foundation was showing signs of stabilizing quickly.
Still, it wasn't odd. After all, Christopher was able to almost instantly know how to use and apply things he learned from his library.
Many would think that having the knowledge of something put inside your brain from the library instantly made you a master at what it was it taught you. But that was false.
Yes, the books perfectly transmitted the knowledge into your brain, down to the last letter. With perfect detail, and it was done in such a way that whoever absorbed the knowledge didn't experience any strain or burden on their mind.
However, even with all this, knowing how to do something, and being able to do that thing, we're two completely different concepts.
A medical student may have completely memorized everything that has to do with medicine to an uncanny degree. But in practice, they may struggle greatly.
The same thing applies to the library. The transfer of information was perfect, but knowledge didn't translate to practicality. That depended on the person who held said knowledge.
That's why the members of the different sects didn't become overpowered instantly either. They could absorb the knowledge of various high-class books, but only be able to make use of 20% of what they learned.
In short, Christopher's library was a great tool, but how much one could comprehend and apply still depended on them.
However, Christopher was different.
From day one, he had effortlessly assimilated and comprehended the things he learned with enough efficiency to apply them almost instantly.
The most absurd example of this was when he fought the Void's avatar. He asked Sinestra who had great authority over the Haven of the Enlightened to transfer the knowledge of hundreds of combat-related books to his mind directly. Hundreds.
Most would struggle with a few, but not only had he effortlessly taken in the knowledge, he was able to apply them in the next second. Literally.
His ability to comprehend and understand things was unmatched. And he didn't know this, but this phenomenon wasn't unique to his current life either.
In his past life, he had always been like this. But due to not being all that educated due to his background, he never had the chance to explore it. And later when he became depressed, he was in no state of mind to even consider that he had some hidden talent.
It was only after Joan appeared that he had the drive to start trying. And he had almost made it into the modeling industry before he died.
The reality was that Christopher had an incredible ability to almost instantly comprehend things he's learned. An ability that has grown countless times since he got his Dimension. Sadly he truly believes that the only thing that makes him worth a damn is his Dimension. So even now, he chalks up any strange or miraculous skill he might have to it being a result of any of his enhancements.
Regardless, due to this uncanny but miraculous ability of his, Christopher was making great strides in his training despite having only started.
His energy management started to become finer and more precise. His movements were more decisive, his actions were no longer so straightforward and carried a hint of deceit that most wouldn't be able to detect until it was too late.
Slowly, Christopher was molding himself into someone of Unparalleled skill and ability, and he would only improve from here.
He was scary enough with the raw attack power he possessed. But if he truly comprehends and melds everything he has into a single, decisive style.
It will be terrifying.

"Well, this isn't ominous at all," Christopher mumbled as he stared ahead. He had finally reached the mountain peak. Or the peak of this mountain at least.
The cold up here was something else, and the Mana was equally dense.
Still, that wasn't what caught his attention.
What did was the blue door the size of a house. Well, that was only part of it.
Had it just been that, he wouldn't have cared all that much. However, the door was in the middle of an ice platform several kilometers in diameter. Which was absurd as the peak didn't look anywhere near this large from farther down.
But it was easy to guess that there was some spatial magic involved.
'If this isn't the textbook definition of a boss arena then I don't know what is.' Christopher sighed and stepped forward.
Immediately he did, the entire place, no, the entire mountain started to shake.
He tilted his head and looked forward and to his surprise, the mountain was shaking at the exact same time the large door started to open. This led Christopher to believe that the door was the cause. Read exclusive adventures at My Virtual Library Empire
'How heavy.' He mused as the door fully opened, and the instant it did, a torrent of frigid air erupted from the door and started to fill the platform.
Christopher was unperturped and simply crossed his arms as he waited. And soon, the being dwelling within the gate emerged.
