Chapter 4: Chapter 4: The First Signs of Turmoil
The night was deep, and the echoes of the evening banquet still lingered in Ethan's ears. A black luxury car glided smoothly through the city's nightscape, neon lights flickering outside the window, reflecting on Olivia's serene profile. Ethan gently held her hand, the warmth of his palm transmitting the rhythm of their heartbeats.
"Are you tired?" Olivia turned her head, her voice soft.
Ethan shook his head slightly, a hint of concern in his eyes. "Olivia, is there something you're not telling me?"
A flicker of surprise crossed Olivia's eyes, but she quickly regained her composure. She smiled faintly, reaching out to gently caress Ethan's cheek, her cool fingertips offering reassurance.
"There are some things I want to handle on my own. I don't want you to worry." Her voice was gentle yet firm.
Ethan felt a slight ache in his heart. He clasped her hand tightly, his tone low and sincere. "We're a couple. No matter what happens, I want to face it with you. You're not alone."
Tears welled up in Olivia's eyes. She leaned against Ethan's shoulder and whispered, "Thank you, Ethan."
The car slowed to a stop beneath their apartment building. The night breeze was cool. Ethan took off his jacket and draped it over Olivia's shoulders, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her gently into his embrace. Olivia looked up at him, her eyes filled with indescribable emotion.
In the elevator, silence surrounded them. Ethan gazed at Olivia and couldn't help but lean down, placing a soft kiss on her forehead, then her brows, the tip of her nose, and finally, her tender lips. Olivia was momentarily startled but soon closed her eyes, responding to his affection. Their breaths intertwined as time seemed to stand still.
As the door opened, Ethan lifted Olivia into his arms and gently placed her on the sofa. His gaze held an unwavering depth, like stars shining in the night sky.
"Olivia, no matter what the future holds, I will never leave you," he said, his voice low and resolute.
Olivia raised her hand to gently caress his face, her eyes full of tenderness. "I know. You've always been here."
They smiled at each other, as if, in that moment, the world only had them.
But the tranquility was shattered by the vibration of a phone. Olivia frowned slightly at the unfamiliar caller ID. Ethan noticed her unease and asked softly, "Whose call is it?"
After a few moments of silence, Olivia answered. A low, familiar voice came from the other end: "Olivia, long time no see."
It was Lorne.
Ethan saw Olivia's sudden stiffness and felt a pang in his heart. He gently held her hand, offering support. Olivia replied calmly, "Mr. Lorne, it's quite late. What do you need?"
"Just a reminder that the family's game has only just begun. I hope your dear Ethan can handle it," Lorne's tone carried a trace of provocation.
Olivia chuckled coldly. "Mr. Lorne, you're as tedious as ever."
After hanging up, Olivia sighed softly. Ethan embraced her and asked, "What's going on?"
Looking up at him, Olivia's eyes revealed a trace of helplessness. "My family... might not be as simple as you see. Lorne was once a business partner of my family. His presence means a storm is coming."
Ethan kissed her forehead gently. "No matter what happens, I'll be with you."
Tears shimmered in Olivia's eyes as she hugged Ethan tightly, whispering, "It's so good to have you here..."
In the depths of the night, their hearts drew closer as the gears of fate quietly turned.
In the early morning, Olivia received a notice from her family that she needed to personally negotiate an important international deal. Ethan insisted on accompanying her, but Olivia gently persuaded him otherwise. "Trust me, I can handle this one."
The negotiation took place in a cold-toned conference room. The opposing company's CEO, Ji Ming, had a piercing gaze and constantly raised the terms, making things difficult. Olivia remained calm and sharp-tongued, but it was clear that Ji Ming was well-prepared, pressing harder with each step.
After the meeting, Olivia sat in the car with her eyes closed in exhaustion. Ethan, upon receiving the news, frowned deeply. He knew he had to do something.
That night, Ethan quietly took action, using his network built over the years to uncover an undisclosed financial issue within Ji Ming's company. He anonymously sent the evidence to Ji Ming, warning that if he didn't cooperate, the information would be made public.
The next day, when Olivia returned for the meeting, Ji Ming's attitude had completely changed. He not only lowered his demands but also offered a toast personally. Olivia was puzzled until Ethan sent a short message: "Rest assured, it's all taken care of."
With the negotiation successfully concluded, Olivia returned home, gazing at Ethan with endless tenderness. "Thank you for always being there when I need you most."
Ethan held her close and whispered, "For you, it's worth it."
Their love, amidst the storm of business battles, became even more unbreakable.
