Chapter 26: Between The Clicks
Lily's cheeks immediately puffed up in embarrassment.
"...NO" she mumbled, stepping into the room.
Maximus smirked but didn't tease any further. Instead, he leaned back in his chair, streching his arms above his head. "Alright, you can sleep here if you please, but I will warn you, I will be awake for a while."
Lily glanced at the screen, lines of code, open files and various tabs filled it. She wasn't sure what he was working on, but it looked very complicated for her mind to wrap around.
"What are you doing?" she asked, stepping closer.
"Just some work," he replied vaguely. "Something I need to finish before tomorrow."
Lily made a small breathe of understanding before turning her attention to his bed.
It was bigger than the one in the guest room, the blankets slightly messy from where he had likely been sitting before moving to the desk.
She didn't hesitate to climb in.
Maaximus raised an eyebrow. "Comfortable?"
Lily pulled the blanket up to her chin, nodding with a small smile. "Very."
He smiled. "That's good…"
For a while, the only sound in the room was the quiet clicking of his keyboard. Lily watched him work, her eyes growing heavier with each passing second.
"You're really focused," she murmured sleepily.
"I have to be," Maximus replied, not looking away from the screen. "If I don't finish this now, its just going to pile up later."
Lily yawned. "That sounds stressful."
"It is. But its also satisfying when its done."
She nodded in reponse, rolling onto her side so she could watch him.
Even in the dim lighting, she could see the concentration on his face, the way he jaw tightened slightly whenever he was deep in thought.
"You work too hard Maximus," she murmured.
Maximus let out a short whim of a laughter. "That's the life of a man, ain't it"
"Maybe, but you should still take breaks."
He turned his head to glance at her, his smirk returning. "are you offering to be my break?"
Lily's cheeks turned red and she quickly pulled the blanket over her face.
Maximus chuckled, "It is so easy to get you all flustered up!"
She peeked at him from under the blanket, "You're so mean…"
She let herself relax into the mattress, watching Maximus for a little while longer before her eyelids grew too heavy to keep open.
The rythmic clicking of the keyboard became a lullaby of sorts and before she knew it, she had drifted off into sleep.
Maximus glanced over his shoulder a little while later, noticing the slow breathing of her chest. She had completely passed out, curled up on his bed like an overfed cat.
A smile spread across his lip, he saved his work and shut down the laptop.
He moved quietly trying not to wake her up, raising the blanket slightly so he could slip in beside her.
Almost immediately his butt touched the bed, she woke up, her sleepy voice barely above a whisper. "You're finally done?"
"Yeah," he murmured.
She let out a satisfied hum and to his surprise, scooted closer, resting her head against his chest.
Maximus stiffened slightly before sighing in defeat.
Lily smiled, her breath evening out as she drifted back into sleep.
And this time, Maximus followed suit.

A soft golden light entered the room through the curtains as morning arrived, casting a warm glow over the room.
Lily was already awake, watching him as he slept with a steady breath, the relaxed expression on his usually sharp features.
He looked peaceful, far removed from the confident and sometimes teasing demeanor he wore while awake.
A small thought entered her mind.
She had never kissed him properly.
Sure, there was that moment on the ferris wheel the previous night, but it was different.
Her heart pounded as she lifted herself slightly, supporting her weight on one elbow. Slowly and carefully, she leaned in, her lips barely brushing against his.
But before she could pull away, a strong arm wrapped around her neck.
Lily barely had time to speak in surprise before Maximus's other hand secured her, pulling her fully against his chest.
Her breath hitched as he opened his eyes, a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips.
"Stealing kisses while I'm at sleep?" his voice was thick with grogginess, deeper than usual.
Lily's face burned with blush, but she didn't back down, "I wasn't stealing, I was just testing something."
Maximus raised an eyebrow, "Oh? And what were you testing for? Are you a chemist all of a sudden?"
She hesitated, suddenly feeling too self conscious to answer. He chuckled at her selince, his grip on her neck tightening slightly.
"If you wanted a kiss, you could have just said so…"
Lily didn't wait for him to finish, she immediately closed the distance between them, resting her lips on his and then sharing a kiss that was slow and deliberate.
