Chapter 50: CHAPTER 48: KAKASHI, YOU'RE WRONG
After leaving the Hokage's office, Haru prepared to head to the Anbu headquarters to collect his uniform and mask. However, he unexpectedly ran into Kakashi along the way.
Kakashi was leaning against a wall, arms crossed, looking as though he had been waiting for some time.
"So... welcome aboard," Kakashi glanced at Haru, then straightened up and scratched his head. "Starting today, I'll be your captain."
"You're wrong."
Haru met Kakashi's gaze and instantly understood what was going on.
Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, must have informed Kakashi about his appointment to the Anbu team. If Haru wasn't mistaken, Kakashi had likely also been given a secret mission by Hiruzen something like keeping an eye on him and reporting his actions.
But...
There was one thing Kakashi needed to understand clearly.
Although Haru had agreed to join the Anbu, he had no intention of taking orders from anyone. In fact, he planned to use this opportunity to turn the tables and absorb the Anbu, which was under Hiruzen's command, into his own force.
"I'm wrong?" Kakashi was taken aback by Haru's statement.
In the Hidden Leaf Village, no one could defy a direct order from the Third Hokage. Had this guy actually refused?
"Starting today, you will be my subordinate, Kakashi," Haru said in a low voice, laying out the current situation.
"What?!" Kakashi's eyes widened in shock, but Haru didn't seem to be joking.
Had the Third Hokage directly appointed Haru as the captain? But how was that possible? This wasn't what they had agreed on yesterday.
After all, Haru wasn't even a genin. He had only attended the ninja academy for a single day. While his strength was undeniable, he lacked the knowledge and experience expected of a ninja. He probably didn't even understand the rules of the shinobi world.
Was it really a good idea to make him the captain of the Anbu, Lord Third Hokage?
Kakashi swallowed hard, his mind reeling from the news.
"And it seems you've misunderstood something," Haru said, taking a step forward as he observed Kakashi's reaction. "The reason I joined the Anbu isn't because of the Third Hokage's appointment."
"Huh?" Kakashi frowned. "Then why?"
"Because I'm interested in all of you," Haru replied, his serious expression softening into a smile. "Now, take me to meet my lovely subordinates."
Kakashi stood in silence for a long moment before finally accepting the situation. No matter how arrogant Haru might seem, he wouldn't dare to lie about something like this. The truth would come out as soon as Kakashi spoke to the Third Hokage.
"Understood," Kakashi said at last, calming himself. He turned and began leading the way for Haru.
As they walked, Kakashi's mind raced.
Haru hadn't said he was interested in you but in you all. In other words, he already knew who was in Kakashi's Anbu squad. Had the Third Hokage told him that? Kakashi furrowed his brow, confused by the situation. On one hand, the Third Hokage had instructed him to guide Haru and report on his actions. On the other hand, he had apparently shared details about the Anbu team with Haru and even made him the captain.
What exactly was the Third Hokage planning?
Still, Kakashi knew better than to go straight to the Hokage for answers. For now, he would focus on the task at hand.
Before long, Kakashi led Haru to the Anbu members' resting area.
"Before meeting the others, let's go see Master Shiba first," Kakashi suddenly suggested.
"Who's that?" Haru asked without hesitation.
He was familiar with most of the named characters in the Naruto universe, but this "Shiba" was someone he had never heard of before.
"Typically, Anbu uniforms consist of a black bodysuit, a white undershirt, and a black trench coat," Kakashi explained. "Due to various reasons, the Anbu keeps a certain stock of these uniforms."
Every Anbu mission carried the risk of death, and damaged uniforms were a common occurrence.
"However, the captain's trench coat is beige," Kakashi added. "So it needs to be custom-made."
"I see," Haru nodded in understanding.
The Anbu team he was joining had originally been led by Kakashi, who was at least seven or eight years older than him, so there was a noticeable height difference. If Kakashi hadn't mentioned it, Haru might have forgotten about this detail in the Naruto lore.
Soon, Haru met the man Kakashi had referred to as Shiba.
"Another newcomer?" Shiba guessed their purpose as soon as he saw Kakashi and Haru.
Although the Anbu kept a stock of uniforms, there were occasional exceptions where custom orders were needed due to sizing issues. Shiba was used to this.
"Haven't seen you before," Shiba said, looking Haru up and down. He then took out a measuring tape and began taking Haru's measurements.
Even though Shiba wasn't a ninja, he was well-versed in the ninja promotion process: graduating from the academy as a genin, passing the Chunin Exams to become a chunin, and then qualifying to become a jonin or join the Anbu.
Shiba attended the Chunin Exams every year and remembered those who performed exceptionally well. Yet, as he measured Haru and made small talk, another Anbu member arrived.
"Captain Kakashi!"
The newcomer was a female ninja dressed in the standard Anbu uniform, with long, straight black hair.
Unlike the emotionless, nameless operatives of the Root, Anbu members lived ordinary lives when they weren't on missions. Many female Anbu members even fell in love, got married, and had children.
Kakashi, with his handsome looks, formidable strength, and aloof demeanor, was particularly popular among the female Anbu members.
When she saw Kakashi, she immediately greeted him and walked over.
"Yako," Kakashi acknowledged her with a glance.
"And who's this?" Yako quickly noticed Haru standing beside Kakashi. "A new recruit?"
"My name's Yako. Nice to meet you," she said with a mischievous smile. "Anbu work is tough, you know."
"All done," Shiba said, finishing the measurements and putting away the tape. "I'll have the new uniform ready soon."
"Oh, and the trench coat should be beige," Kakashi added, emphasizing the color for Haru.
The moment he said this, Shiba, Yako, and the other Anbu members who had arrived with her froze in place.
They all knew that the beige trench coat was reserved for the Anbu captain.
This guy... was the captain?
