Chapter 51: Chapter 49: The Japanese Tradition of Gekokujō

Yako looked Haru up and down, her eyes filled with shock.

Haru appeared to be around twelve or thirteen years old, about the same age as Uchiha Itachi.

And Itachi's resume was nothing short of impressive.

At the age of four, he had participated in the Third Great Ninja War and returned unscathed.

He enrolled in the ninja academy at six and graduated in just one year.

By eight, he had awakened his Sharingan.

At ten, he was promoted to chunin, becoming the first ninja in Konoha to pass the Chunin Exams alone.

By eleven, he had the strength to join the Anbu.

Yet, even a genius like Uchiha Itachi hadn't been promoted to captain immediately upon joining the Anbu.

In contrast, the unremarkable guy standing before her had been made captain right off the bat.

What's more, their squad wasn't leaderless they already had an outstanding captain in Kakashi.

This meant that Haru's arrival was essentially a power grab from Kakashi.

"Captain Kakashi, what exactly is going on here?" Yako turned to Kakashi, her tone tinged with anger.

"Exactly what it sounds like," Haru interjected calmly. "Starting today, I'll be leading this team. Kakashi has been demoted from captain to a regular Anbu member."

"What?!"

Not only Yako, but the other Anbu members behind her also widened their eyes in disbelief.

"Captain Kakashi has been stripped of his authority?"

"Why?"

"Yeah, in terms of strength and leadership, no one can match Captain Kakashi, right?"

Haru's sudden appointment instantly sparked discontent among the Anbu members.

However, Kakashi didn't seem to mind. In terms of strength, Haru was superior to him.

"Alright, that's enough," Kakashi sighed helplessly, stopping the others from questioning Haru further.

After the measurements were taken, Haru only needed to wait for Shiba to finish making the captain's uniform and deliver it.

"It's time to meet the rest of my subordinates," Haru said casually, then strode away.

The Anbu members, unable to accept this turn of events, gathered around Kakashi, eager for answers.

"Is Captain Kakashi leaving the Anbu?" Yako, who admired Kakashi, couldn't help but ask.

Though it pained her to think about it, there were precedents for Anbu members leaving to become jonin.

"Not exactly," Kakashi shook his head, offering no further explanation as he quickly followed Haru.

The remaining Anbu members exchanged glances, sensing that something unusual was afoot.

"Even if Captain Kakashi were to leave the Anbu and become a jonin, we still have Tenzo in our squad."

"But Tenzo was originally from Root. Could that have something to do with it?"

"What about Itachi? His ninja resume is incredibly impressive."

"Besides, I don't think Captain Kakashi plans to leave the Anbu."

Haru's sudden arrival had undoubtedly caused a significant stir among the Anbu members, leaving them dissatisfied.

Kakashi, Tenzo, and Uchiha Itachi each of them was a genius ninja capable of standing on their own.

Now, all three of them were expected to follow Haru's orders.

It was baffling.

Despite their growing resentment toward Haru, the Anbu members finished their tasks and headed to the meeting point.

The Anbu, short for "Special Assassination and Tactical Squad," was essentially the special forces of the ninja world.

Typically, a squad consisted of four or five members, led by a captain who relayed and executed orders.

However, due to various circumstances, Tenzo and Uchiha Itachi had joined the squad midway.

With Haru's addition, the squad now numbered eight members.

'Though, at this point, Uchiha Itachi is probably still in the evaluation phase,' Haru thought, noticing Itachi's late arrival. When Itachi noticed Haru, a flicker of surprise crossed his eyes.

'If I remember correctly, Uchiha Itachi joined the Anbu at eleven. Not long after, he witnessed Shisui's suicide.'

'Then, after some time, he was promoted to Anbu squad leader by the Third Hokage. For the sake of Sasuke and Konoha's peace, he annihilated the Uchiha clan. Later, on the Third Hokage's orders, he left the village and joined the Akatsuki.'

Haru mused to himself, feeling that Itachi would likely leave the squad soon.

Of course, that was a matter for later. For now, Haru needed to make sure everyone knew who he was.

"It's him..."

Tenzo furrowed his brow, looking at Haru standing beside Kakashi, feeling a wave of surprise.

"Did the Third Hokage assign him to the Anbu?" Tenzo wondered silently.

Though he had only met Haru once, the encounter had left a deep impression.

Haru was the only other ninja in Konoha, besides himself, who could use Wood Release.

And unlike Tenzo, Haru was the true successor of the First Hokage.

"Hello, everyone."

As Tenzo's thoughts wandered, Haru cleared his throat and began his introduction.

"My name is Haru. Starting today, I'll be your captain."

"Captain?"

At these words, both Uchiha Itachi and Tenzo's expressions turned dark.

"What is this guy trying to do?" Itachi stared directly at Haru, feeling that he couldn't quite figure him out.

Not long ago, Haru had gone to the forest near the Naka Shrine, demonstrating his power and leaving behind a strange strategy.

Now, he had suddenly joined the Anbu and was immediately made captain.

For a moment, Itachi felt that "unfathomable" was the only way to describe Haru.

"Haru, huh."

Tenzo frowned slightly. He had expected Haru to mention his status as a member of the Senju clan, but Haru hadn't brought it up.

Still...

Why was he being made captain?

Perhaps his Wood Release was powerful, but Kakashi was clearly more suited to lead the team.

However, aside from Itachi and Tenzo, the majority of the voices were filled with doubt.

"Do you really have what it takes to be our captain?"

"This is the Third Hokage's appointment," Kakashi interjected in a low voice, emphasizing the point.

Yako, watching Kakashi defend Haru, felt her admiration for her captain sour.

As ninjas, especially Anbu ninjas, accepting orders and carrying out missions was their rule.

But...

In Yako's heart, Kakashi was clearly the better fit for the role of captain.

"For the Anbu, combat training is the most crucial part of our regimen. Allow me to challenge you, Captain," Yako said, staring directly at Haru with a serious expression.
