Chapter 57: Chapter 55: The Third Hokage's Shock Once Again
The commotion Haru caused in the Anbu was quickly reported to the Third Hokage by Ibiki.
In the Hokage's office.
Before Ibiki could even finish his report, the Third Hokage abruptly stood up from his seat.
His eyes widened in disbelief.
Both Kakashi and Tenzo were steady and reliable ninjas. Even if Haru had joined their Anbu squad as the captain, they should have been able to accept the appointment without issue.
Yet, not only did Yako and the others get involved, but even Kakashi and Tenzo had joined in.
"Did Haru defeat Kakashi and the others using Wood Release?" Hiruzen Sarutobi couldn't help but take a deep breath, his mind conjuring up images of Haru defeating everyone.
He imagined that when Haru unleashed the Wood Release: Advent of a World of Trees, all the Anbu members who witnessed it must have been utterly shocked.
"I can imagine it," Hiruzen nodded, recalling how he himself had been stunned when he first learned about it.
"Wood Release? What Wood Release?"
However, Ibiki looked completely baffled.
Did Haru know how to use Wood Release?
Wasn't that a secret technique that had been lost since the First Hokage?
Haru could use Wood Release?!
Ibiki's mouth hung open in an "O" shape without him realizing it. He had thought he would only be shocked by Haru once, but he hadn't expected to be stunned twice in a single day by this sudden newcomer!
"Wait…"
Not only Ibiki, but even Hiruzen was now filled with questions.
"You're saying Haru defeated Kakashi and the others without using Wood Release ?"
Hiruzen was deeply surprised. He had assumed Haru had relied on his massive chakra reserves and the overpowering nature of Wood Release to suppress Kakashi and the others' tactics.
But the truth was, Haru hadn't used Wood Release at all!
Then how had he defeated Kakashi and the others?
After all, Kakashi had already been a jonin during the Third Great Ninja War and had transplanted Obito's Sharingan during his battle with the Hidden Stone ninjas.
And Tenzo had transplanted cells from Hashirama Senju, gaining the Wood Release kekkei genkai.
Without exaggeration, Kakashi and Tenzo together were like a low-budget version of Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju.
"It was genjutsu," Ibiki said, sensing Hiruzen's shock from his demeanor and quickly revealing the truth.
"But…"
"But ?" Hiruzen frowned, feeling more and more that Haru was like an enigma.
Ever since Haru had suddenly gained immense chakra, Hiruzen had been suspicious.
But considering that Haru was a descendant of the Senju clan and wanted to become a ninja of the Hidden Leaf, Hiruzen had simply assigned Kakashi to monitor him.
He wanted to see if they could uncover the truth behind Haru's sudden strength.
But they had found nothing. It was as if Haru had suddenly been blessed by the gods.
First, he gained vast chakra reserves, then Wood Release, and now he had even mastered genjutsu!
Who…
Who had made Haru so powerful so quickly?
Could it be Jiraiya?
Given his knowledge of the village, he could indeed slip through the barriers unnoticed.
But even with his guidance, Haru's progress was alarmingly fast.
"Sigh…"
Ibiki took a deep breath and revealed the truth that had left him utterly perplexed.
"This is just my personal speculation, but no one saw Haru perform any hand seals for genjutsu, nor did anyone notice… when he activated it."
"What?!"
Hiruzen was shocked once again.
As the Third Hokage and the strongest ninja in the village, no one understood better than him how terrifying this was.
Generally, genjutsu was different from ninjutsu. It required some form of contact with the target to activate.
For example, touch, sound, or eye contact.
While the victim might not notice immediately, observers could usually detect the activation through the caster's movements, sounds, or visual cues.
But Ibiki was certain that Haru had simply stood there. He hadn't done anything.
Then, one by one, Kakashi and the others lost consciousness and collapsed.
Most importantly, Ibiki wasn't just anyone.
He was the captain of the Anbu Torture and Interrogation Force. He dealt with genjutsu regularly and was one of the most knowledgeable about it.
Yet even he could only speculate.
Either Haru hadn't used genjutsu, or…
He had used an extremely advanced genjutsu, so advanced that even Ibiki hadn't noticed it.
Shisui!
Hiruzen's eyes widened as the image of the Uchiha clan's genjutsu prodigy flashed through his mind.
Shisui had even claimed that his Kotoamatsukami could permanently rewrite someone's will, making the Uchiha clan abandon their coup plans.
Such a terrifying genjutsu was something even Hiruzen had never heard of.
At the time, he had wondered if it was wise to leave such power in the hands of the Uchiha clan.
Perhaps Shisui was on the village's side today, but what if…
It was precisely because of such concerns that Hiruzen had informed Danzo of Shisui's whereabouts.
When he heard the news of Shisui's suicide, he had indeed felt a sense of relief.
"No…"
Hiruzen shook his head. Shisui's genjutsu was based on the Sharingan.
And if an outsider transplanted the Sharingan, it would remain permanently active.
Kakashi was a perfect example.
Haru's eyes were clear and bright, showing no signs of having transplanted a Sharingan.
"Third Hokage-sama," Ibiki called out, seeing Hiruzen lost in thought. He raised his voice to bring him back to reality.
"Hmm?"
Hiruzen quickly composed himself. "How is Tenzo doing now?"
"He's still unconscious. According to the medical staff, he'll need some time to recover," Ibiki replied.
"I see," Hiruzen acknowledged.
According to the original plan, he had intended to bring Haru and Tenzo to the Land of Iron for the meeting.
But now, Tenzo was clearly unable to accompany them.
And according to past practices, such meetings required at least two escorts: one combat specialist and one sensory specialist.
Aside from Tenzo, the most skilled sensory ninjas in the village were from the Hyuga clan.
But considering the circumstances, bringing them along didn't seem appropriate.
Just as Hiruzen was pondering who to choose, a knock sounded at the door.
"Come in."
After receiving permission, the office door slowly opened.
The person who entered was none other than Haru.
"Third Hokage-sama, Tenzo needs some time to rest. It seems we'll need to find someone else."
As soon as Haru walked in, he noticed Ibiki, but he got straight to the point.
"I asked the other Anbu captains and heard that for such meetings, we need to bring a sensory-type ninja."
"What do you think of Fû ?"
"I hear his sensory abilities are strong, and he's easygoing, calm under pressure, and even likes bananas."
