Chapter 701: Awakening
Chapter 701: Awakening
The stadium was a cauldron of emotions, the atmosphere lively. The cheers of the audience filled the stadium.
Blinding lights illuminated the stadium.
Shun warily looked ahead. He could see the retreating figure of his teammate. At the same time, he could spot a few opponents heading his way.
"Tch!" He clicked his tongue bitterly.
The sight ahead made him uneasy, and he couldn't help but panic. The number of opponents outnumbered the number of his teammates.
They advanced at a threatening pace while his teammates scrambled to regroup. He could tell they wouldn't make it even if they rushed behind alarmingly.
His instinct warned him. He could tell that he was in a pinch.
Beads of sweat trickled down his forehead, and he couldn't help but furrow his brow. For some reason, upon finding himself in such a difficult spot, he couldn't help but remember Hiro.
His season had been anything but good.
He conceded more than thirty times and had a rather disastrous season.
The opponents were getting closer with every passing second. Yet it looked as if he had to defend this threat alone. His teammates couldn't even get near the ball.
The situation was escalating from bad to worse, and Shun could palpably feel it.
For a moment, it even felt as if his own teammates were playing against him. He had been trying his best to perform. Yet, he had already conceded a lot this season. Now, if he conceded even more, who knows about the consequences he'd suffer?
"Shun, you need to improve your game. If you can't improve your game, I'm sorry, I'll be forced to list you in the transfer list."
While trying to focus on the threat ahead of him, Shun couldn't help but recall the words spoken by his manager. He had already been warned about his faltering performance.
He knew he had been signed as a second-choice goalkeeper. However, he still had duties to fulfill. He had to defend their post in the absence of the first-choice keeper.
Yet, he hadn't been able to fulfill his duties.
With swift one-two passes, the opponents fluidly moved the ball. Shun could tell it won't be long before they breach inside their defensive half.
Yet he couldn't do anything about it.
He couldn't even leave his post. Neither could he stick between the poles.
"I can't afford to lose here."
His eyes lit up with determination as he tightened his grip. He placed him at the edge of the box. Shun had transferred here with the dream of surpassing the best goalkeepers.
If he were to fall here, how would he face his friends?
The season might have been disastrous, but he would still give his all. He would do everything in his power to prevent this goal.
As he braced himself for the impact, his focus peaked.
Shun could spot every minute detail before him. He could spot the gaps, and he could spot the threat. Yet still, identifying the shooter was easier said than done.
The opposing team consisted of many good shooters and finishers.
This made pinpointing a single individual rather difficult. His only option would be to force one individual to shoot.
"But who?"
The crowd was getting anxious, their eyes filled with anticipation. Especially, the fans of Braga, they looked as if they had lost all their hopes. Their eyes were rather listless. Though their face looked tense, their eyes were dull.
Shun positioned himself perfectly. He positioned himself at the edge of the box. A little further and he wouldn't be able to chase after the ball if it were chipped over him.
A little deeper and he wouldn't be able to defend properly.
Even though he was in a disadvantageous situation, he tried his best to prevent the goal. The opposition inched closer to the goal. Shun stabilized his breathing as he kept his eyes fixated on the ball. Though he was under pressure, he had to remain calm.
After all, he was their last line of defense. If he were to panic, then who would stop the menace of the opposition from wreaking havoc on the pitch?
But it would have been great if Hiro were here.
With him here, he would be chasing after the ball. It would have been reassuring to have him here. However, he wasn't here and he couldn't be dependent on him.
He had left Japan to improve.
Shun gritted his teeth as he came face to face against the Sporting forward.
Fortunately, the opponent wasn't Viktor this time. He had faced him in the previous season.
Viktor was gut-wrenchingly threatening before the post. He had that knack of smelling the goal that made him extremely terrifying.
Even so, he couldn't take the opponent before him lightly.
After all, he had to keep a vigilant watch over others too. He couldn't focus his attention
sharply on one player. This was the hardest part for him.
Even in this perilous situation, he couldn't afford to focus his entire attention on one particular individual.
Though this burdened him, he had to distribute his focus equally.
'Who will it be?'
Shun tried to figure out the shooter. However, the more he pondered, the more he felt
tangled.
Out of desperation, he lunged forward.
If he couldn't predict the shooter then he had to make sure the one he selected would be the shooter. In short, he had to force the individual he selected to shoot.
The opponent, upon finding Shun charging at him, panicked.
It wasn't because Shun charged at him. But because he couldn't spot a single space to shoot.
He imagined a few options but every option led to failure.
He could tell he wouldn't be able to dribble past him.
If he tried to force his way, he would get caught up. Even if he tried to chip the ball above, it
felt as if Shun could reach it.
'Isn't he supposed to be a good-for-nothing keeper? Then why can't I see a path?'
The opponent couldn't help but panic.
For some reason, right now, Shun looked unconquerable. Like an unconquerable peak, he stood before him and the goal.
