Naruto Birdcage

Chapter 40: Ch 40 : Mist

The strong wind shakes the branches of the trees, and all that can be seen now is a sea of white mist, concealing deadly dangers lurking within.

Konoha shinobi attempt to use Wind Release to disperse the dense fog, but the mist quickly reforms, clearly not something that ordinary Wind Release can dispel.

Swish!

The sound of a weapon slicing through the air—the unmistakable sound of a kunai—shoots towards the back of Makoto's head.

However, at the last moment, the kunai veers off course, seemingly pulled by some invisible force, and neatly lands in Makoto's hand.

From the depths of the fog, a surprised voice murmurs, "How...?"

The kunai spins lightly in Makoto's hand before he suddenly freezes in place, his eyes locked onto the faint movement ahead.

In an instant, his body becomes still, and the surrounding scene comes to a halt.

With precise aim, Makoto shoots the kunai through the mist, striking something with a loud thud.

Thud!

Moments later, a muffled sound of someone hitting the ground echoes through the fog.

In the thick fog, Makoto, without the Byakugan, had extremely low visibility, but he could clearly sense the positions of everyone around him.

The familiar and unfamiliar chakra signatures flickered like flames in the dark, incredibly obvious despite the mist!

He had long ago studied countless sensory techniques in books and had never stopped training them.

Suddenly, Makoto heard a noisy sound, like rushing water.

A torrent of water surged toward him from the fog, rapidly spinning like a sharp spear, aiming straight at his position.

This Water Release was nowhere near as magnificent as the previous Water Dragon Bullet.

Makoto stood still, showing no intention to dodge.

As the water reached just before his eyes, it was suddenly stopped by invisible barriers, one after another!

Despite the raging force of the water, it only splashed to the sides.

Makoto calmly watched the water in front of him, his body completely dry.

He silently assessed the chakra consumption within him.

With a sudden leap, Makoto charged toward the direction from which the water had come.

A transparent shield seemed to appear in front of him, deflecting all the water's attacks.

The enemy hadn't expected Makoto to find their position in this way.

Seeing his Water Release become completely ineffective, panic surged in their heart.

In the brief moment of distraction, it was already too late to escape.

In the thick fog, the Kiri-nin barely saw a cold, indifferent face before his neck was firmly grabbed.

He struggled desperately, his face turning red as he only emitted a rasping sound.

What terrified him even more was that the chakra in his body started moving uncontrollably, crashing against his meridians and organs.

Finally, after a dull sound, the person before him fell silent and was casually tossed to the ground.

Makoto glanced at the body at his feet, his brow lightly furrowed, before shifting his gaze away.

What a tragic end.

He wouldn't use this move again next time.

In the forest, someone use a Fire Release, and the intense heat began evaporating the mist, but it was quickly extinguished by Water Release.

Weapons clashed, the sounds of metal ringing, explosive tags detonated, and cries of pain and shouts echoed.

Makoto continued to run through the fog, engaging in combat with the next enemy.

However, this skirmish didn't last long.

The fog quickly began to dissipate, and visibility gradually improved.

The strength displayed by Hiashi and Hizashi exceeded the Kiri-nin' expectations.

The Mist techniques, which were supposed to be a major hindrance, had no effect on them, and instead, it was the Kiri-nin themselves who were paralyzed.

Many of the Kiri-nin combined attacks not only failed to succeed but were instead all cut down by the two of them.

When the sounds finally ceased, the mist finally cleared away.

The forest had taken on a more chilling atmosphere.

The twenty-four Kiri-nin had all turned into lifeless bodies scattered on the ground or hanging from tree branches.

The area was scarred by the aftermath of ninjutsu and explosive tags, with shallow puddles of water accumulating on the ground, along with deep craters caused by earth-style jutsu.

The situation on the Konoha side was also grim, with many suffering from severe injuries and receiving treatment from the medical ninjas in the group.

One had even sacrificed their life, and several people were gathered around their body, paying their respects in silence.

The supply team consisted of experienced and skilled ninjas, who had shown remarkable adaptability in the face of this surprise encounter.

Hiashi turned his gaze to Makoto, who was unharmed and only had a few bloodstains on his clothing.

His gaze shifted slightly.

Logically speaking, without the Byakugan, Makoto should have been the weakest among them...

Makoto, sensing Hiashi's gaze, gave a slight bow in acknowledgment.

Hiashi withdrew his gaze and intended to walk toward the body of the fallen comrade.

"Lord Hiashi!" At that moment, a desperate shout from Hizashi suddenly rang out.

He was currently next to the traitor they had been escorting.

Hiashi felt a sudden pang in his chest and immediately used a Body Flicker Technique to appear by Hizashi's side.

On the ground, the bound traitor lay lifeless, his body pierced with several kunai, blood pooling around him.

Hiashi's face immediately darkened.

"How could this happen?"

Hizashi, hearing his words, immediately knelt down in apology.

"I'm sorry, Lord Hiashi. It's my fault. I was the one carrying him, but when I saw you surrounded by so many people…"

Hiashi's expression was as cold as water, his Byakugan eyes flashing with cold light.

Hizashi was his bodyguard, and no matter what mission Hiashi was on, Hizashi would always be by his side.

For Hizashi, the most important thing was to protect Hiashi.

Hiashi knew this very well.

Protecting him was Hizashi's duty and mission, and he couldn't bring himself to blame Hizashi for what had happened.

The surrounding silence was heavy.

Their temporary mission on this return trip was to escort this traitor, yet now he had died along the way.

Hiashi knew full well the significance of this traitor's death.

The person behind this traitor was a criminal from Konoha, one of the most notorious.

The mission to escort him back to Konoha was to expose the mastermind behind him!

How would he explain this to Lord Hokage, to Shikaku, and to Minato…?

He had even sworn an oath to Shikaku before leaving.

Hiashi stood silently in place for a long time, until Hakumen hesitantly approached and softly called out, "Lord Hiashi?"

Hiashi exhaled heavily, then turned to Hizashi. "Get up."

"What happened is something none of us wanted to see.

It's a miracle that we survived the enemy's ambush, but the failure of the mission is my responsibility as the team leader."

Hizashi immediately responded,

"How can Lord Hiashi take all the blame?! It's clearly my fault!"

The others nearby also spoke up, saying that the responsibility was shared by everyone, and not just Hiashi alone.

Hiashi, feeling irritated, replied,

"Enough. Let's clean up the battlefield, take Renji's body, and head back to the village."

His gaze then shifted to Makoto, who stood a short distance away, seemingly detached from the situation, quietly watching the traitor's lifeless body.
