Naruto Birdcage

Chapter 41: Ch 41 : The truth

Root.

"You say Wu is dead?"

Danzo was quite surprised when he heard the report from his subordinate.

Wu was the inner traitor that Shikaku had captured, the pawn that Danzo had pushed forward.

He was someone with a clean background and no connection to them.

"Who killed him?"

"Hyuga Hiashi and the others encountered an attack from the Mist Ninjas on their way back. In the chaos of battle, Wu was killed by the Mist Ninjas."

Danzo furrowed his brows.

This was completely unexpected.

Wu had a mental barrier technique in his mind, and anyone skilled in mental intrusion would break through that barrier and trigger another genjutsu, showing fabricated information.

And this false information was what Danzo wanted to pass on to the Third Hokage, as well as Minato and Shikaku.

Danzo knew very well how little credibility an inner traitor sending out information like this would have.

When he first heard that Wu was dead, Danzo immediately thought that Shikaku and the others had killed him.

If that were the case, it would be fine.

He could directly tell Hiruzen that Shikaku and the others were trying to destroy evidence and had malicious intentions.

Whether Hiruzen believed it or not, at least the blame would be shifted.

But the truth was, Wu had died at the hands of the Mist Ninjas.

That meant his entire plan was ruined...

If it happened again, wouldn't it be too obvious?

...

In the Hokage's office, Hiruzen was holding a pipe, the smoke swirling around, obscuring his face.

Hiashi stood there and continued,

"This mission failure is my responsibility. Please, Lord Hokage, punish me."

Hiruzen gently tapped the pipe, then slowly said,

"There's no need to say that. You were attacked by enemies, and that's what led to this outcome."

He then asked, "You mentioned that when you captured the traitor, Inoichi did not extract any useful information from him, correct?"

Hiashi paused and then replied, "Inoichi said that the traitor had a mental barrier technique in his mind. He needs to be interrogated by the Torture Division."

Hiruzen's gaze shifted slightly at this.

This was something the Torture Division might not be as skilled at as the Yamanaka clan.

Inoichi could have easily extracted information first and then handed it over to him.

Why hadn't he done so?

Was Shikaku hinting at something to him...?

Hiruzen pondered for a long time, many thoughts swirling in his mind, yet he didn't dare to jump to conclusions.

He said, "You've worked hard on this mission. Your original task was simply to transport supplies. The traitor, as a criminal of the village, is dead, and that's the end of it. Go back and rest for now."

Hiashi bowed and said, "Thank you, Lord Hokage, for your understanding. Our Hyuga clan also wishes to eliminate traitors for the sake of the village. If there are any tasks in the future, please be sure to call on us."

Once Hiashi left, Hiruzen's face turned troubled.

The lead that had appeared so promising was abruptly cut off, and the appearance of the mist ninjas was certainly poorly timed...

Could it be that the mist ninjas came for this traitor?

Did someone want to silence him?

As Hiruzen's thoughts raced, there came another knock on the door of his office.

A member of the medical team in a white coat walked in.

"Lord Hokage."

"What is it?"

"The body has some issues!"

....

Makoto had just returned home when Ayari hurriedly came to his door.

"You little brat, why didn't you tell me you were going on a mission?" Ayari questioned with an unhappy expression.

"It was sudden. Lord Hiashi summoned me, and I didn't have time to tell you," Makoto replied.

Ayari walked up to Makoto and carefully examined him from head to toe.

"How is it? I heard you encountered enemies. Are you injured?"

Makoto said, "I'm fine. Just lost a comrade."

"Are you really okay?" Ayari still seemed worried, questioning whether Makoto was lying to her, though she didn't seem to care much about the latter part of his statement.

"Do you want me to take off my clothes to show you?" Makoto joked.

Ayari couldn't help but kick his calf and scold, "You're such a troublemaker!"

She then asked again, "Was the mission dangerous?"

Makoto replied, "People died. What do you think?"

Ayari finally remembered what Makoto had said earlier about losing a comrade.

"So how come you're fine?" Ayari asked.

"I'm very strong," Makoto replied.

"How strong?"

"Very strong, that kind of strong."

Ayari saw Makoto tidying up some ninja tools on the desk and asked, "What are you doing?"

Makoto said, "I was in a rush when I left yesterday and didn't get to take a lot of things with me. Now I'm organizing everything carefully so I'll have it next time I need it."

"Are you going on another mission?"

"I've already been on one mission. When the village needs me, I'll go on another one."

Ayari nodded thoughtfully. She realized that ever since Makoto lost his Byakugan, he hadn't gone out on any missions.

Spending time with him recently had made her almost forget that Makoto was still a ninja.

He had changed a lot compared to before, but during this time spent together, Ayari had gotten used to the change.

Makoto suddenly tossed something at her.

Ayari, sitting on the sofa, quickly reached out to catch it, only to find it was a beautifully crafted short sword.

"I found it on one of the mist ninjas' bodies. Thought it looked nice, so I brought it back for you."

Ayari carefully examined the sword in her hands.

When she drew it from its sheath, the bright blade gleamed with a cold light.

She chuckled and said, "You really know how to give gifts, giving me something from a dead person. And who gives a girl a sword?"

"It looks nice on the table. If you don't like it, you can return it."

Ayari, however, placed the sword in her arms.

"A gift is something that can't be taken back. I'll reluctantly accept it."

She continued to play with the sword in her hands.

In the afternoon, Natsu arrived.

It was Ayari who opened the door.

She was quite surprised to see Natsu standing outside, and Natsu seemed just as surprised.

"Natsu, are you here to see Makoto?" Ayari immediately said with a smile.

She couldn't help but think to herself,

"This guy, Makoto, really knows how to get girls to visit him."

Natsu looked a little embarrassed.

"Ayari-nee, I heard Makoto came back from a mission, so... I came to check on him."

Ayari smiled and said, "Well, you two chat. I was just about to leave."

She turned to Makoto and said she was leaving, then picked up the short sword from the sofa and left.

Makoto stood up and walked to the door, welcoming Natsu inside.

It was Natsu's first time coming to Makoto's house.

After a quick glance around, she noticed that it was cleaner and tidier than she had expected.

After sitting on the sofa, she asked the same question Ayari had asked earlier.

"I heard you ran into mist ninjas on your way back. How are you, did you get hurt?"

"No."

"The mission must have been dangerous, I heard one of your teammates sacrificed themselves."

"Yeah, the mission failed on the way back."

"As long as you're okay."

Natsu appeared a bit stiff and unnatural, quite different from her usual confident self.

It was a subtle difference, but Makoto noticed it immediately.

The girl visiting him might not have been entirely her own decision.

The two of them chatted casually for a while, and before long, Natsu decided to take her leave.

....

The next morning.

Suddenly, Hiashi received a mysterious package.

His servant had found it in the courtyard and handed it to him.

Inside was a bloodstained kunai and a pair of Byakugan sealed in a glass container!

This greatly shocked Hiashi.

He immediately used his Byakugan to scan the entire Hyuga compound, but couldn't detect any suspicious individuals.

He suddenly realized—the bloodied kunai and the Byakugan were proof of Hitsuo's death and the theft of the Byakugan, weren't they?

Who left this behind?!

Who would dare to challenge him in such a way?

Furious beyond measure, Hiashi noticed that the package also contained a note with a time and place, inviting him to meet at a location outside the village that night.
