Naruto Birdcage

Chapter 47: Ch 47 : Loyal to whom?

Ayari, dressed in her pajamas, was sitting on the sofa.

When Spi saw Makoto, it excitedly tried to leap towards him, but she tightly held it back.

Makoto sat down on the opposite side of the sofa and asked,

"Aren't you asleep?"

Ayari turned her gaze away. "You woke me up."

"And Spi?"

"Spi was also woken up by you."

"Woof!"

Ayari glanced at Makoto out of the corner of her eye, noticing that he was pouring himself water from the teapot on the coffee table.

She said, "I wonder what the clan leader is doing here so late?"

After a pause, she added, "If there's nothing urgent, please leave. I need to rest."

Makoto, being straightforward, said, "It's just that I haven't seen you in two days. I missed you."

Ayari was startled by his words, quickly standing up.

In the process, Spi took the opportunity to wriggle free from her arms and ran to Makoto's side, rubbing its body against his leg.

Ayari stood frozen, her head lowered as she pressed her lips together in silence.

After a long pause, she finally spoke, "Don't say things that might be misunderstood."

Makoto calmly replied, "Misunderstood? Isn't what I said easy to understand?"

Ayari couldn't bring herself to look at him.

Slowly, she sat back down on the sofa, bringing her legs together, her posture that of someone who had done something wrong.

She forced a smile and said,

"Clan leader, please don't play these word games with me.

I'm tired, and I need to go try on wedding dresses early tomorrow."

"Your engagement has been canceled."

Ayari froze for a moment. "You... you have no right to do that?!"

Upon hearing the news, she was shocked, but strangely, she wasn't upset.

If anything, her displeasure stemmed from the fact that his actions felt too domineering and forceful.

Makoto spoke indifferently, "I'm the clan leader. My word is final."

He then asked, "And besides, weren't you the one who didn't want to get married?"

"I..."

Ayari felt an indescribable mixture of emotions.

Makoto's tone had suddenly become more aggressive, leaving her no room to retreat, almost as if he were intentionally pushing through the tension between them.

This made her feel wronged.

It seemed like he didn't care about her dignity at all, but she could only force herself to hold back her emotions.

Taking a deep breath, she said, "Makoto , don't do anything you shouldn't."

There was silence from his side.

After a while, Ayari thought perhaps her words had made an impact and caused him to hold back.

Unable to resist, she glanced up, only to meet his gaze.

The warm yellow light from the room illuminated him, outlining his sharp features, and those dark eyes made Ayari's heart skip a beat.

In a calm voice, Makoto said,

"Whatever I want to do, no one can stop me.

What I desire will ultimately be mine."

Ayari's hand clenched into a fist at his words.

"You should understand what I mean. Take your time to think about it. I'll give you time to convince yourself," he added.

"Because even if you refuse, it won't matter."

After Makoto left, Spi kept pawing at the closed door, confused as to why Makoto hadn't taken it with him.

Ayari sat there motionless, as if her soul had left her body.

Ayari naturally understood Makoto's thoughts, she had always understood, but she had never considered it in that way and had always thought of him as just a child.

When Makoto returned from the battlefield, it was as though he had become a different person.

She had initially approached him with the intention of comforting him, but gradually, she found that being around him felt surprisingly comfortable.

He had suddenly matured so much.

However, his actions at the clan meeting two days ago made her feel utterly unfamiliar with him.

How had he gone from being a Chunin ninja without Byakugan to becoming the clan leader?

Ayari still couldn't understand or imagine it, and she realized that she didn't know him at all.

The ambition and ruthlessness that Makoto had shown terrified her.

This was no longer the boy who had always followed her around as a neighbor's younger brother.

Now, he was the Hyuga clan leader, someone who struck fear into the hearts of all the clan members!

Thinking about the "ultimatum" he had just given her, Ayari felt even more helpless.

Was she destined to fall into his hands?

But with their age difference...

If this were to get out, how would others view them?

Ayari couldn't sleep the whole night.

Makoto, on the other hand, had no psychological burden and slept soundly.

When it came to women, he was very clear-headed—he just needed to take that first step.

The next day.

In the morning, Orochimaru sent the Anbu to summon Makoto.

When Makoto arrived at the office, he saw Orochimaru reclining in the chair, with piles of documents stacked up on the desk.

"Lord Hokage, did you need something from me?"

Makoto walked up to Orochimaru, who casually picked up a document and handed it to Makoto.

The content on the document was about the village's financial expenditures.

Orochimaru handed over another document, this time containing the villagers' opinion letters.

Makoto found it interesting and said, "This is part of the Hokage's basic duties."

Orochimaru replied, "It's a waste of time; I don't have the time to deal with this kind of thing."

He then added, "I plan to establish a dedicated research institute to study the Byakugan."

Makoto gestured to the financial expenditure document in his hand.

"The village doesn't have extra funds."

Orochimaru said, "The Daimyo will provide the funds."

After Orochimaru succeeded as Hokage, the Daimyo left the village and returned to his domain.

"The Daimyo will support you now, but you'll need to show some political achievements in return," Makoto remarked.

Orochimaru, feeling annoyed, directly asked, "Can you handle it?"

Makoto's eyes shifted slightly. "I can."

"Then it's all yours."

Makoto looked at the pile of paperwork on the desk and said,

"Lord Hokage, there's something you need to pay attention to."

Orochimaru, who was about to get up and leave, glanced at him and said, "What is it?"

"You don't have many capable subordinates right now, do you? Even the Anbu are still from the Third Hokage's time."

"…"

"Many things should not be known to these Anbu.

Who knows if they still have ties to the Third Hokage?

In this case, you'll have to rely on Danzo's power, Am I right?"

Orochimaru was left speechless.

Before taking the position of Hokage, he had no real power, just some fame.

Even now, he still had to rely on Danzo.

He had never paid attention to this before, but as he began scheming for the position of Hokage alongside Makoto, he realized that nearly everything he did had been accomplished with Danzo's cooperation.

He didn't have his own power.

This was also why he hadn't confronted Danzo directly; he needed him.

Otherwise, it wouldn't just be Hiashi who would die with the label of being an "internal traitor."

Makoto said to Orochimaru,

"Lord Hokage, you should start building your own power.

At the very least, you should clean up these Anbu around you."

Orochimaru fell into thought. "You're right," he said.

Makoto then continued, "How about I help you with this?"

Orochimaru asked, "How would you help me?"

"I can temporarily bring members of the Hyuga clan into the Anbu.

With the Caged Bird curse mark on them, they will be the most loyal subordinates.

That way, Lord Hokage can do whatever you want without having to worry about them."

Orochimaru's eyes narrowed slightly as he asked, "Who exactly are they loyal to?"

Makoto's expression remained calm.

"They are loyal to me, which means they are loyal to you, don't they?"

He then added, "Could it be that Lord Hokage still doesn't trust me?"

Orochimaru's gaze flickered, and he smiled lightly.

"How could that be, Makoto? You are my most trusted subordinate."
