Chapter 35: Chapter 35: The Price of Victory
The battlefield lay in heavy silence. The mist, once thick and foreboding, began to dissolve under the gentle warmth of the morning sun. Broken trees, shattered ice mirrors, and deep fissures in the earth told the story of the fierce battle that had just ended.
Naruto knelt, his fists pressed into the cold earth. His breath was ragged, his body trembling—not from exhaustion, but from emotion. His eyes, red-rimmed from tears, remained fixed on the still forms of Haku and Zabuza.
---
The Aftermath
Footsteps crunched over the ruined earth. Kakashi approached, his voice low but steady.
"Naruto…"
Naruto's voice cracked, barely more than a whisper. "Why…? Why did it have to end like this?"
Kakashi's gaze softened. "This… is the life of a shinobi. It's never easy. Sometimes… we fight people who have their own reasons, their own pain. There are no true villains here… only victims of this cruel world."
Naruto's fists clenched tighter, his nails digging into his palms. "But… it's not fair!"
---
Sasuke Stirs
A faint groan broke the moment.
Naruto's head shot up. "Sasuke!"
He scrambled over, eyes wide as he saw his friend stir.
Sasuke's eyes fluttered open, weak but alive. His voice was strained but carried his usual edge. "Tch… You're… so noisy…"
Relief crashed over Naruto in waves, and he felt his throat tighten. "You idiot! Don't scare me like that!"
Despite his pain, Sasuke's lips tugged into a smirk. "Hmph. Looks like… you didn't need me to save you… this time."
Naruto's voice cracked with emotion. "I… I thought… you were…" He couldn't finish.
Sasuke, though weak, managed to lift his hand and flick Naruto's forehead—the same gesture Itachi once used on him. "You… can't get rid of me that easily, dobe…"

A Shinobi's Funeral
The sky had fully cleared, and the group gathered near the fallen.
Despite the battle, Naruto insisted they give Zabuza and Haku a proper burial.
Tazuna, his voice rough, offered his respects. "They fought for what they believed in… even if it was on the wrong side."
As they finished, Naruto placed Haku's broken mask atop the mound. "I'll never forget you…" he whispered. "You… taught me what it really means to protect someone precious."
---
The Bridge's New Name
As they turned back toward the unfinished bridge, Tazuna's voice rang out, "This bridge… it brought us all together… through pain, through loss, through courage…"
He paused, his gaze warm but firm. "I've decided to call it… The Great Naruto Bridge."
Naruto's eyes went wide. "Huh?! Me?!"
Tazuna grinned. "You saved this village. You reminded me what hope looks like."
Naruto, for once, was speechless, his cheeks flushing as he rubbed the back of his head. "Heh… I guess I am pretty awesome…"
Sasuke muttered, "Great… Now his ego's never gonna shrink."
---
Zabuza's Blade and a Promise
As they prepared to leave, something unexpected happened—Zabuza's Executioner's Blade remained, embedded in the earth.
Kakashi's gaze lingered on the massive weapon. "Strange… such a blade would usually disappear with its wielder's fall."
Sasuke's eyes narrowed in thought, but Naruto, walking up to it, placed his hand on the hilt for a brief moment. The cold steel felt… heavy, not just in size, but in meaning.
"I'll carry what you left behind, Haku… Zabuza…" he whispered.
---
Return to Konoha
The boat ride back was quieter, more solemn. Yet, there was a feeling of growth, of bonds strengthened through fire.
As the Hidden Leaf came into view, Kakashi spoke. "You've both grown. This mission was far beyond a normal C-rank. But you handled it like true shinobi."
Naruto grinned, the sadness in his eyes still lingering but softened by pride. "Heh! We're just getting started!"
Sasuke glanced sideways, his voice calm but firm. "Next time, don't leave me out of the fight."
Naruto's eyes burned with determination. "Next time, we fight together."
---
The Looming Shadow
But far beyond their sight, shadows moved. In a darkened room, a single pair of eyes, like a serpent's, watched through an unseen source.
"Oho… The Nine-Tails Jinchūriki… and the last Uchiha, raised together…"
The voice, smooth and dangerous, hissed with twisted delight.
"Orochimaru… will be most pleased."
