Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Echoes of Serpents
The towering gates of Konoha stood before them, familiar and comforting. Yet, as Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi crossed the threshold, the air felt different—heavier, as if the shadows from their mission still clung to their heels.
Naruto stretched with a loud yawn, trying to shake off the lingering tension. "Man, I can't wait to hit Ichiraku! I'm starving!"
Sasuke, hands in his pockets, smirked faintly. "You're always starving."
Sakura chimed in, her voice tired but firm. "We should report to the Hokage first, Naruto."
Kakashi, his eye creased with approval, nodded. "Exactly. Duty before ramen."
Naruto groaned, "Ugh, you guys are no fun."

The Mission Report
In the Hokage's office, Hiruzen Sarutobi listened intently as Kakashi detailed the harrowing events of the Land of Waves. The Third Hokage's face, lined with years of wisdom and battle, grew somber at the mention of Zabuza and Haku.
"You've done well," he said gravely. "This mission, though it began as a C-rank, became an ordeal far beyond what was expected." His eyes fell on Naruto and Sasuke. "You two… have experienced the true cruelty of the shinobi world. I trust you will carry these lessons forward."
Naruto's fists clenched at his sides. "Yeah. I'll get stronger. Strong enough so no one has to die like that ever again."
Sasuke, his voice quieter but no less determined, added, "Next time… we'll be ready."
The Hokage's gaze softened with pride but remained cautious. "Good. Rest for now—training and new challenges await you soon."

The Serpent's Whisper
As Team 7 left the office, Hiruzen's eyes darkened with concern. He turned to an Anbu in the shadows.
"Keep an eye on Naruto… and Sasuke," he ordered. "The serpent has begun to stir… and he will be watching them closely."
---
A New Threat Approaches
Elsewhere, far from the Leaf Village, a sinister chakra pulsed through a cavern adorned with snake motifs. Orochimaru's pale, serpentine face split into a chilling smile.
"Kakashi's students… particularly the Uchiha boy. How… promising." His tongue flicked out, tasting the air.
Beside him, a silver-haired figure emerged from the shadows—Kabuto Yakushi. His glasses glinted coldly. "Shall we make our move?"
Orochimaru's voice slithered like a cold wind. "Not yet. But soon… The Chūnin Exams will bring them all together. And then… the hunt begins."
---
Training and Resolve
Back in Konoha, Team 7 stood in the training grounds the next morning. Despite their exhaustion, Kakashi wasted no time. "Today, we push your limits further. The enemies you faced in the Land of Waves won't be the last—or the strongest."
He pulled out two bells, familiar from their first test. "But this time… you'll need more than teamwork. You'll need power, instinct, and resolve."
Naruto's eyes burned with determination. "Bring it on, Kakashi-sensei!"
Sasuke's Sharingan flickered to life. "I won't fall behind."
Sakura, fists tight and eyes sharp, stepped forward. "I'll prove I'm not just the weak link!"
---
The First Clash
Kakashi vanished in a blur—Zzzp!—appearing behind Sasuke in an instant. "Too slow."
Sasuke barely dodged a sweeping kick, his Sharingan tracking Kakashi's every move.
Meanwhile, Naruto formed a shadow clone—"Shadow Clone Jutsu!"—and rushed from two sides. Kakashi effortlessly countered, dispelling one clone and parrying the other. "Better, but predictable."
Sakura, recalling every lesson, struck from above with a precise kunai throw, forcing Kakashi to block—just as Naruto's second clone swept low with a leg sweep.
Kakashi flipped, avoiding both attacks, but his single eye showed a flicker of approval. "Good… You're reading each other well."

A Dark Glimpse
Suddenly—
Wham!
A burst of chakra surged from Sasuke, and for a brief second, his Sharingan shifted—his eyes darkening with a fleeting flicker of something else.
Kakashi's heart clenched. "That chakra… Could it be…?"
The air felt colder, and from deep within Sasuke, a dormant power stirred—watching, waiting.
