Chapter 189: The Full Picture

Hell Valley's eerie mist lingered over the jagged cliffs as two shadowy figures observed Baishi from the ridge above. Their presence was subtle, but Baishi's senses, honed by countless trials, caught them instantly.

"Summer… Firefly," Baishi murmured, his voice laced with a tinge of surprise.

Hearing their names, the two figures exchanged puzzled glances.

"Do you know us?" the man with black hair finally asked, his tone cautious.

"Know you? Of course," Baishi replied with a faint smile, his gaze shifting to the intricate chakra wings extending from their backs.

Like his Wind Wings, their wings were formed from condensed chakra. However, unlike his steady and controlled technique, their wings shimmered with a unique, almost living quality, pulsating with an intensity that could only come from mastering the Peacock Secret Method.

Baishi recognized them immediately. Summer and Firefly—two elites of Hoshigakure who had achieved mastery over the village's notorious technique.

The peculiar quality of their chakra came from the celestial meteorite housed in Hoshigakure. Its radiation had fundamentally altered their bodies, enhancing their chakra to unprecedented levels. Yet, it was a double-edged sword, granting immense power at the cost of devastating health consequences.

Baishi's Mind's Eye activated instinctively, scanning their conditions. His brows furrowed as he discovered the full extent of their suffering. Their cells showed rampant mutation, deteriorating rapidly as their lifespans waned.

"It's worse than I thought," Baishi muttered under his breath.

The meteorite had turned their bodies into ticking time bombs. Every moment they used their enhanced chakra, they edged closer to death.

'No wonder they'd risk everything to steal the meteorite,' Baishi thought, recalling Hoshigakure's troubled history. Years ago, the Third Hoshikage had tried to eliminate the meteorite, believing it was more curse than blessing. Unfortunately, his efforts were thwarted, leaving the meteorite in the village's possession.

To most, the meteorite was a disaster waiting to happen. But to Baishi, it was an opportunity.

"If I can harness its energy, I could push my evolution further—maybe even develop Radiation Resistance," he mused.

The thought of adding such a potent ability to his repertoire solidified his resolve.

Without warning, Baishi leaped into the air, his Wind Wings propelling him toward the duo.

Seeing his sudden approach, Summer and Firefly reacted instantly, retreating while forming hand seals. Their chakra wings flared brightly, readying a counterattack.

But Baishi had no intention of dragging the fight out. Silver energy enveloped him as his Chakra Cloak activated, enhancing his speed to the point that he seemed to vanish.

"Be careful!" Firefly shouted, his voice strained as he coughed violently. His weakened condition betrayed his efforts to mask his injuries.

Baishi didn't relent. With a low hum, he unleashed a subsonic wave, the vibrations disrupting Firefly's concentration. His chakra wings faltered, and he plummeted from the sky.

"Firefly!" Summer cried, abandoning her attack to dive after him.

Baishi took advantage of her distraction, surging forward and seizing her by the throat.

Before she could react, he placed a Curse Binding Seal on her neck, instantly immobilizing her.

"You care more about him than yourself," Baishi remarked, noting the desperation in her eyes as she watched Firefly's descent.

Shaking his head, Baishi spread his Wind Wings and swooped down, catching Firefly moments before he hit the ground.

Both of his captives now subdued, Baishi wasted no time. He applied the same combination of seals and mental control he'd used on the earlier group, ensuring their complete obedience.

With all five of his captives unconscious, Baishi began extracting their memories. Placing a hand on Summer's head, he activated the Mind Reading Technique.

Fragments of her past, her mission, and her desperation flashed through his mind.

Once done, Baishi moved to Firefly, repeating the process.

As he pieced together their memories, the truth became clear: they were here to investigate the changes in Hell Valley.

Unbeknownst to them, Baishi's two-month presence had drastically reduced the density of the poisonous mist. This disruption had caught Hoshigakure's attention, leading them to dispatch investigation teams.

Still, Baishi had been careful to cover his tracks. The earlier scouting groups had found nothing conclusive, but the declining toxicity forced the village to escalate their efforts.

This time, they sent Akaboshi, Yataka, and Kikyo, three elite Jonin, with Summer and Firefly operating covertly to support them.

"Persistent," Baishi muttered, glancing at his captives. "But it worked out. They came straight to me."

He touched the seals on Summer and Firefly's necks, ensuring their loyalty was absolute.

"Why waste my time retrieving the meteorite when they can do it for me?"

Hoshigakure was a small village, and the meteorite was its most guarded treasure. Yet with these five under his control, infiltrating and stealing it would be a simple task.

Baishi looked at his system panel. Poison Resistance was on the verge of breaking through, and there was no point delaying.

"I'll leave the hard work to them," he decided, turning back to his meditation spot.

---

Baishi settled back into his practice, leaving his newly acquired subordinates to fulfill their mission.

"This meteorite better be worth it," he muttered, inhaling another dose of toxins as the poisonous mist swirled around him.
