Chapter 86: Chapter 86: Full-Force Encirclement of Neji Hyuga
Whoosh!
A flash of movement unbelievably fast and from an impossibly close range. The blade rose and fell in an instant!
"Aaargh!"
Before Danzō could even react, his right arm was severed with a chilling shlick. Blood spurted forth like a fountain, the sight gruesome enough to send a shiver through anyone watching.
Neji swept past him without so much as a glance, his eyes cold and devoid of mercy. Time seemed to freeze in that moment, and the crowd erupted in gasps of disbelief.
"What?!"
Hadn't Neji just been cleaved in two?! How was he now standing there, completely unharmed? This… this was unreal.
"What happened? Was that a clone? But all that blood how do you explain that?!"
"Was it all an illusion?!"
Confusion rippled through the crowd like wildfire. In the blink of an eye, the tide of battle had completely turned. What just moments ago seemed like Neji's downfall had been flipped on its head.
"Orochimaru's body substitution technique…" Koharu Utatane and Homura Mitokado froze, their faces darkening. Orochimaru had only just attacked Konoha not long ago this resemblance couldn't be dismissed so easily.
"Is he a spy…?" Koharu muttered. Then, she raised her voice to the crowd. "Everyone! Full-force encirclement of Neji Hyuga!"
Even as she spoke, she sprang into action, forming hand seals mid-run. "Earth Release: Rock Snare Rod!"
The ground rumbled. Soil and stone surged upward, condensing into a long staff that stood upright on the earth.
But she wasn't done. Her hands moved again with practiced precision. "Water Release: Rushing Spiral Torrent!"
In her other palm, water rapidly condensed into a spiraling vortex, swirling like a miniature waterspout, its power tangible.
Neji furrowed his brows and shot a cold glance at Koharu. This old bat again. If not for the sheer number of witnesses around them, he would've ended her already. Still, even with such constraints, it didn't mean he would back down.
His right arm turned to stone in an instant, a hardened carapace forming in preparation. He wouldn't kill her but he'd make sure she wouldn't get in his way again.
Koharu arrived at the standing stone rod, gripped it with both hands, and yanked it free, brandishing it like a spear.
The rest of the crowd was in shock. What just happened? Why had Koharu suddenly gone from onlooker to attacker? And what were they supposed to do now?
Their confusion was cut short as Tsunade stepped forward.
"Stop!" she commanded sharply.
She moved without hesitation, placing herself between Koharu and Neji.
"Tsunade-sama, mind your position," Koharu warned, frowning. Her grip on the stone staff tightened. Not even Tsunade's presence made her waver.
"Neji is not Orochimaru's spy," Tsunade said firmly, her voice brooking no argument.
She knew exactly what Koharu was thinking, but it simply wasn't possible. Neji had protected Konoha while in Orochimaru's clutches. He had driven Orochimaru back, had brought her home. There was no way he would ever harm the village.
"But he used a technique only Orochimaru can use!"
"And yet, he found me. He saved me from Orochimaru's hands"
"Enough! He's clearly suspicious." Koharu cut her off, refusing to entertain further discussion. If they captured Neji now, they could interrogate him and uncover the truth.
She exchanged a glance with Homura. Without another word, both elders sprang into action. They weren't aiming to kill only to subdue. But even that much enraged Tsunade.
"These two old fossils… so rigid!" she growled.
Boom!
Tsunade launched into the fray alone. Her fists gleamed with power as she struck with devastating force. Though her hands were bare and fair, their sheer strength sent both elders stumbling backward. Even Koharu's spinning vortex of water shattered on impact.
With a swift follow-up, Tsunade unleashed a chakra-infused palm strike, stunning Koharu. She seized the stone rod from her hands and, with a sharp twist, snapped it in two.
"Tsunade! What do you think you're doing?!"
"We are Konoha's ruling council!"
Their voices rang with indignation. In their youth, they had been formidable. But now, with age dulling their edge, not even together could they hold their ground against her. And besides, with Tsunade already chosen as the next Hokage, they couldn't afford to push things further.
"Silence!" Tsunade roared. "You arrogant relics who do you think you are?! Neji is the proud heir of the Will of Fire, entrusted by my grandfather. He is not a traitor. He is a shinobi of Konoha. He is Konoha's future!"
Tsunade didn't care about saving their pride. She had long been fed up with their rigid, outdated ways. Now that she was Hokage, she intended to see real change.
Meanwhile, Danzō, still on the ground, let out a low snarl. His eyes burned with fury as he reached desperately for his severed right arm.
"You really think I'll let you take what I worked so hard to obtain?" Neji sneered.
Without missing a beat, he spun around and kicked the severed arm far out of Danzō's reach.
"You won't be using Izanagi," Neji said coldly, his hands already forming seals.
"Earth Release: Earth Flow Wall!"
Four earthen barriers rose from the ground, surrounding Danzō's arm on all sides, completely cutting him off from it.
"You can't form seals now. So how are you going to break through four stone walls?" Neji stood atop one of the high walls, gazing down with icy disdain.
"Damn it!" Danzō cursed. This was all his fault. He should've killed Neji with a single strike instead of wasting time talking. Now… now he could only stew in regret, his chest heaving in frustration.
"This ends here."
Neji leapt high into the air, his long black hair swirling like a storm around him.
"Rabbit Needle Rain!"
Tens of thousands of slender black needles erupted from his hair and rained down upon Danzō like a dark storm, each needle carrying a terrifyingly sharp penetrative force.
"Damn it!" Danzō dodged frantically, but there were too many. Escape was impossible.
With no other option, he smeared some of the blood from his severed arm and activated a summoning technique.
In the next instant, a massive beast appeared before the stunned crowd larger even than a Tailed Beast.
"The Tapir…" Neji muttered. A creature said to devour nightmares. What was Danzō trying to do? Absorb the needles into its belly?
But he was wrong.
Danzō hadn't summoned the Tapir to fight or defend. It was merely a shield, a disposable wall of flesh. The creature let out an anguished cry as the Rabbit Needles tore into its massive body.
Danzō didn't flinch. His eyes were locked on only one thing: his right arm.
With his remaining hand, he grasped a kunai laced with wind chakra and slashed. The reinforced blade sliced through the earth wall like paper.
"Eight Trigrams: Mountain Crusher!"
A roar split the air, followed by a blinding white blast.
Boom!
Danzō's right chest was punched straight through. Blood sprayed from the gaping wound as he staggered, crumpling to the ground in a heap.
"This battle… was mine to win," Neji said calmly.
His clothes were spotless, his posture serene. He stood atop a jagged boulder, expression cold, as he gazed down upon the writhing figure below.
Root was gone.
The Tapir was gone.
There was no one left to save Danzō now.
