Chapter 340: 339-Concentrate
The sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, its golden beams dappled across the moss-covered stone platform where Tani sat in the lotus position. Her slender figure was motionless, save for the occasional twitch of her furrowed brow or the subtle rise and fall of her chest. The world around her was alive with the symphony of nature—the cascading waterfall in front of her murmured a soothing melody, its rhythmic splashes punctuated by the occasional rustle of leaves stirred by the wind. Mist rose from the falls, its cool tendrils curling around her like a gentle embrace, carrying the faint, earthy scent of wet stone and fresh water.
Tani clenched her fists against her knees, trying to push her frustration down. Her task was deceptively simple: focus. But the simplicity was an illusion, a cruel veneer masking a challenge that seemed insurmountable. Hours dragged by, the stillness of the world around her contrasting sharply with the storm raging in her mind.
A faint breeze blew, carrying with it the faint aroma of wildflowers blooming somewhere beyond the waterfall's mist. Yet, even this serene ambience could not quell her growing irritation. Her thoughts circled back to the task—channelling all her chakra into a single point of her body while keeping the rest devoid of energy. It was unnatural, counterintuitive, and felt impossible.
"Enough," she muttered to herself, her voice barely audible over the sound of the falls.
With a sharp grunt, Tani's eyes snapped open, their usual focus clouded by irritation. She slammed her palms against her knees, the sound echoing faintly off the stone walls of the secluded glen. Her voice, tinged with exasperation, broke the tranquillity.
"Do I really have to do this?" she demanded, her words hanging in the air like an accusation.
Beside her, another figure stirred. Hano Ayame sat in an identical lotus position, her serene demeanour a stark contrast to Tani's visible frustration.
A faint smile tugged at Ayame's lips as she turned to face her pupil. "You always have to have patience, Tani-chan," she said softly, her voice carrying the steady cadence of a brook flowing over smooth stones. She paused, allowing her words to sink in before continuing. "Besides, if you are to become the next Two-Tails Jinchuriki, this is important."
The weight of Ayame's words seemed to settle on Tani's shoulders, her earlier defiance replaced by a sullen expression. Her face darkened, and her hands curled into fists atop her knees.
Becoming the Jinchuriki of Matatabi, the Two-Tails, was an honour to her and her clan—one that came with immense power and responsibility. Yet, as the days of relentless training stretched into weeks, it felt less like an honour and more like a punishment.
"This is ridiculous," Tani muttered, shaking her head in disbelief. "I've never seen you or Blue B-dono struggle with this."
Ayame chuckled lightly, a sound devoid of condescension. It was a laugh that spoke of experience, of lessons learned through struggle. "That's because our paths were different, Tani. Each Jinchuriki's journey is unique. And remember, Gyūki, the Eight-Tails, and Matatabi, the Two-Tails, are not the same. They're both powerful in their own way, but their natures couldn't be more different."
Tani's curiosity flared despite her frustration. "What do you mean by that?"
Ayame shifted slightly, her posture as graceful as ever as she explained. "Gyūki is a storm, wild and unrelenting. He's chaos incarnate, a force of nature that thrives on raw, destructive power. He's also deeply distrustful of humans, which makes bonding with him a far greater challenge. Matatabi, on the other hand..." Ayame's voice softened, a hint of reverence seeping in.
"Matatabi is calm, measured—a reflection of still waters that run deep. She's introspective and far more cooperative, though no less powerful."
Tani frowned, the weight of Ayame's words stirring an unsettling mix of emotions within her. "If that's true, then why does the Raikage value Gyūki more over Matatabi?"
Tani's question wasn't unfounded, the eight tails jinchuriki has always been close to the Raikage for as long as she was aware.
For a moment, Ayame's serene expression faltered, her gaze growing distant. "Perhaps it's because Kumogakure has seen Gyūki's destructive power firsthand, more times than they'd like. They trust in his ability to end wars through sheer force. But that doesn't mean he's stronger than Matatabi. Strength isn't always about destruction, Tani-chan. It comes in many forms."
Her cerulean eyes sparkled with a playful glint as she added, "Besides, I'm sure Killer B will master Gyūki, just as you will master Matatabi."
The lighthearted comment drew a reluctant smile from Tani, though it faded as quickly as it appeared. She sighed, her shoulders slumping in defeat.
"This still feels impossible."
"It's not," Ayame said firmly, her tone brooking no argument. "When you can concentrate all your chakra into one part of your body, leaving the rest of you chakra-less, you'll be ready to take on Matatabi's power fully."
Grumbling under her breath, Tani closed her eyes once more, reluctantly returning to her meditation. The sound of the waterfall seemed louder now, its steady rhythm like a metronome guiding her breathing. Slowly, her thoughts began to settle, and the storm within her mind gave way to a fragile calm.
The tranquil serenity of the glen was shattered, replaced by the chaos of battle. Tani, now fully transformed into Matatabi's colossal feline form, loomed over a lone figure standing defiantly amidst the rubble.
Renjiro.
Her massive form radiated heat, the blue flames that licked at her fur casting eerie, flickering shadows across the devastated landscape. Her eyes, twin orbs of blazing fire, locked onto the black-haired boy below.
He had dared to use a genjutsu on her—a genjutsu so potent that it had taken all of her and Matatabi's combined will to break free. The memory of it stoked her fury, her tails lashing behind her with enough force to split the earth.
"He can't be allowed to do that again," she muttered, her voice a guttural growl that resonated with Matatabi's power.
To calm herself, she whispered a single word: "Concentrate."
The hours of grueling training under Ayame had prepared her for this moment. Despite the overwhelming rage and the unfamiliarity of her transformed state, her control was precise. The transition was seamless—her movements deliberate, her focus unwavering.
Opening her massive jaws, Tani began to gather chakra, the energy swirling into a dense, pulsating sphere. The sheer intensity of the attack made the air hum with anticipation, the ground beneath her cracking under the strain.
"No, it can't be!" Renjiro's voice was barely audible over the roaring vortex of energy. His Sharingan spun wildly, his body moving instinctively as he dodged the attack.
"Boom!"
The Tailed Beast Bomb exploded with a blinding flash of light, its impact sending a ripple of destruction across the battlefield. The ground cracked and heaved as the explosion ripped through the earth, uprooting trees and obliterating what remained of the once-pristine clearing. The shockwave rolled outward, toppling distant structures and reducing them to rubble.
Renjiro was thrown back, his body hitting the ground hard before he used his chains to gain momentum and stop against a jagged outcrop of rock. Dazed, he forced himself upright, his ears ringing from the deafening blast.
His gaze swept across the battlefield, taking in the devastation.
Where the research facility once stood, there was now only a smoldering crater. The air was thick with smoke and the acrid stench of charred wood and earth. Further out, the city of Miyahira was in chaos, the blast's residual force leaving shattered windows and frightened civilians in its wake.
Renjiro clenched his fists, his teeth grinding in frustration. "How the hell is this a new Jinchuriki?" he growled, his voice barely audible over the crackling flames. "She's already mastered the transformation... and now this?"
But Tani was not done, she made another tailed Beast Bomb aiming at Renjiro.
