Chapter 25: Potential Needs Proper Stimulation
On Saturday morning, Obito, Shisui, and Guy began training as Muyue had instructed.
Obito first followed Muyue to learn basic taijutsu moves. After an hour of practice, Muyue let Obito rest, handed him a bottle of water, and wiped his sweat.
Obito immediately felt something was off. Although Muyue was a good teacher, he wouldn't normally be this considerate. Handing water was possible, but wiping sweat at most meant offering a handkerchief.
"Obito, I think you still have a lot of untapped potential," Muyue said with a smile, capping the unfinished bottled water and placing it on the ground.
"No, no, no, I think my potential has already been fully unleashed by you, Teacher," Obito felt cold sweat breaking out on his forehead, which he had just wiped of hot sweat.
"You're underestimating yourself too much," Muyue said, shaking his head.
"How about this: when you fight Guy, for every hit you take, you'll do one extra question during your rest time later. This should thoroughly unleash your potential. Even if it doesn't, doing more questions will improve your theoretical grades," Muyue explained.
"Teacher, that's not good. If I get hit a hundred times, I don't mind doing the questions, but I'm worried you'll get tired from making so many questions," Obito said, feigning concern for Muyue.
Obito was desperate, and his quick thinking made his speaking skills improve. For Obito, doing endless questions was more torturous than a passionate brawl with Might Guy.
"Obito, I'm very happy that you're concerned about your teacher's health," Muyue said, showing a gratified expression.
Just as Obito thought he might be spared, Muyue changed his tone.
"I guessed you were such a good kid, so I prepared a large number of questions for you in advance. You don't have to worry about running out of questions," Muyue said with a smile, pulling out a stack of test papers, indicating there were plenty.
"Is it enough? If not, I can have my shadow clones make more," Muyue asked with a smile.
"Enough, enough!" Obito shook his head frantically. He looked at the stack in Muyue's hand and felt overwhelmed.
Though the sun was bright and Muyue's smile was warm that day, Obito felt a chill shoot up from his feet to his head.
Since the direct approach wouldn't work with Muyue, Obito decided to try a different strategy. If he couldn't avoid doing questions, he would at least do fewer.
With that thought, Obito quickly winked at Might Guy, signaling him to go easy later.
Might Guy saw Obito's signal and showed his dazzling white teeth, confidently giving Obito a thumbs-up with a relaxed smile.
"As for Guy, if you miss a hit, you'll do fifty questions. For each hit you land, you'll do one less question, up to a maximum reduction of forty questions," Muyue continued.
Might Guy's expression suddenly changed. He gave Obito another thumbs-up, this time with a serious look.
"Fight with all my might? No, not this!" Obito wailed, clutching his head, already visualizing a massive pile of questions coming his way.
"For youth, I must exert all my strength to minimize the questions!" Might Guy felt his passion ignite.
Obito didn't want to do questions, and neither did Guy.
In the ensuing battle, Might Guy unleashed powerful punches, instantly exploding to 120% of his speed and relentlessly chasing Obito.
Obito, desperate to avoid questions, also had a burst of potential, and his footwork became much more agile after being hit over a dozen times.
Muyue nodded with satisfaction, seeing such great progress in both of them, "Isn't there still a lot of untapped potential?".
The battle ended when both of them were exhausted. Obito was hit over thirty times, so he had to do over thirty questions, while Might Guy only had to do a dozen or so. Muyue felt the effect was very good, and if they continued training like this, perhaps in less than two months, Hyuga Kaede would no longer be their match.
"It's a pity that Rin Nohara doesn't have good talent. If I had taken Rin Nohara as a disciple, it would have been easier to motivate Obito," Muyue thought. For the sake of discretion, he was unwilling to train non-disciples.
Actually, there was an even better candidate: Kakashi. Rin Nohara could only motivate Obito, but if Kakashi were also there, both Obito and Might Guy would be motivated. Kakashi's talent was sufficient, but unfortunately, it was unlikely that Kakashi would become his student, as Kakashi had already been promoted to Chunin two years prior.
Muyue accompanied them in training until noon, ate lunch with the three of them, and finally left two shadow clones behind. Muyue's main body then headed to the Third Hokage's home, ready to begin his tutoring work.
Perhaps because it was still work hours, Muyue didn't see Hiruzen Sarutobi, only a middle-aged woman with a single ponytail, who was Hiruzen Sarutobi's wife, Biwako Sarutobi.
"Lady Biwako," Muyue greeted.
"You must be the Teacher Hanyu that Hiruzen spoke of," Biwako Sarutobi asked, recalling the appearance the Third Hokage had described.
Muyue nodded.
"Asuma is waiting for you in the backyard," Biwako Sarutobi directed Muyue and reminded him, "That child Asuma is a bit rebellious. Please bear with him, Teacher Hanyu. If he's truly unruly, just tell me".
"I will, but I have some special techniques for dealing with rebellious students," Muyue replied with a smile, then walked in the direction Biwako Sarutobi had indicated.
Upon reaching the backyard, Muyue indeed saw a boy of about nine years old, holding a blade of grass in his mouth, lying lazily against a tree.
Muyue first gave an appraisal.
[Name: Sarutobi Asuma]
[Chakra: 1100]
[Potential: A+]
Noticing Muyue's arrival, Asuma spat out the grass, didn't stand up, and directly asked, "Are you Hanyu Muyue, the one who's going to teach me?"
Without waiting for Muyue to reply, Asuma quickly added, "Look, if you can't make me surpass the Old Man, meaning the Third Hokage, then just leave. It's pointless".
Asuma felt he needed to assert his dominance over this tutor and gain the upper hand.
Just as Asuma wondered how Muyue would respond, Muyue shook his head and said, "Of course not".
"Then just leave," Asuma waved him off and lay down. He didn't believe Muyue would actually leave like that.
"Alright, I'll go now and tell Lady Biwako that you don't need a tutor," Muyue said, turning to leave.
Seeing that Muyue actually looked like he was going to leave, Asuma was filled with questions. What the heck? Why isn't he following the script? Shouldn't he be kindly persuading me not to be silly or something? Why is he just leaving?
"Hey, hey, don't leave yet!" Asuma did a quick sit-up, stood up, and called Muyue back. If the teacher left angry before even starting, he would definitely get a scolding from his mother.
