Chapter 33: Asuma's Perseverance
"Muyue-sensei, when are we going to start training in nature transformation? I've been reading the handbook you gave me every night, and I really want to try it out," Obito asked, walking back and forth on the small river.
Climbing trees and walking on water every day was getting too boring.
Besides, Muyue's nature transformation handbook had truly inspired him; he suddenly felt like his Fire Style was about to become amazing.
"Find walking on water boring? Already trained enough?" Muyue asked with a smile.
"Mhm, mhm." Obito nodded quickly; he could already jog on the water.
"Alright then, I'll test your level and help you make walking on water a bit more interesting," Muyue quickly formed hand signs, and his chakra burst forth.
"Water Style: Water Dragon Bullet Jutsu!"
A massive water dragon quickly formed, then tumbled in the small river, instantly turning the calm surface into a surging torrent, occasionally raising huge waves.
"Ugh, ugh..." Obito accidentally fell headfirst into the water and swallowed a mouthful.
Muyue instantly pulled Obito out and laughed, "See, you still haven't mastered it."
"Muyue-sensei, how am I supposed to withstand that when you suddenly pull a stunt like that?" Obito complained.
He still had his pride, with a classmate and a junior from his clan present.
"Then try again," Muyue chuckled.
Walking on water heavily tested a ninja's control over continuous chakra output. With the Water Dragon Bullet distracting him, and having to dodge waves, being able to maintain stable, continuous output in such conditions meant excellent chakra control.
Obito was stubborn with his words, but not with his skill. He fell into the water again after only a few minutes.
"The shoes I'm wearing today don't fit right; it's affecting my performance," Obito explained, spitting out the river water from his mouth. He then placed his shoes on the bank and walked barefoot on the water's surface.
Muyue smiled faintly without speaking.
A little while later, Obito fell into the water again.
"Oh, it must be because I stayed up too late reading yesterday, so I'm not energetic today. No wonder I made so many mistakes."
Obito stretched his limbs, twisted his neck, rolled up his sleeves, and his eyes became serious as he said, "Now I'm going to get serious."
Plop!
The sound of falling into the water rang out again.
After Muyue quickly pulled Obito out, Obito's eyes were vacant, his face expressionless, and he didn't speak again.
"Obito-kun, it's okay, I know you're just trying to learn to swim," Shisui comforted him.
Obito covered his face with his hands and said, "Shisui, you go ahead, I'll be fine by myself for a bit."
"Do you feel like you performed too poorly?" Muyue squatted beside Obito, not looking at him, but gazing into the distance.
As the saying goes, there's no harm without comparison.
While Obito hadn't even begun his control training, Shisui had already started.
And Shisui's progress was incredibly fast, directly skipping tree climbing from the start, and walking on water was easy for him. He could even endure for a long time on the water with Muyue's interference.
It was because of Shisui's performance as his clan junior that Obito remained stubborn. He admitted he might not be as good as Shisui, but he shouldn't be
that much worse.
"Actually, last week on Saturday afternoon, I left because I went to the Hokage's house to tutor," Muyue said.
"The Hokage has a young son, you probably know him, Sarutobi Asuma, he's only one year older than you."
Obito nodded, he did know him.
"When he was doing water walking training, I also used Water Dragon Bullet to interfere. He fell into the water at least dozens of times that afternoon, and finally, on the last try, he lasted for five minutes."
"Asuma actually..." Obito didn't expect that Asuma, an honor student from the ninja academy, would also have such a hard time, and even more, that he persisted for an entire afternoon despite it.
Obito now had a new respect for Asuma; he had never realized he had such perseverance when they knew each other before.
"Sensei, I understand! I'm rested and ready to train!" Obito took a deep breath and said spiritedly.
If Asuma could persevere, why couldn't he? His goal was to defeat Kakashi in front of Rin and come out on top!
"Eat something before you train," Muyue handed Obito a plate of dango he had bought earlier.
"Mm, thank you, Sensei!" Obito shouted energetically, quickly finished the dango, and walked into the river.
[You gave your disciple red bean dango. Due to the disciple's extreme gratitude, the reward critically hit, and you obtained the skill: Chef]
[Chef: Your cooking is so delicious it can produce illusions]
"Eh, I actually got a skill, and a life-skill at that," Muyue was a little surprised.
Although the rewards from teaching disciples were occasionally random, like Might Guy giving him Water Style Mastery, he didn't quite understand getting Chef from Obito.
However, it didn't stop Muyue from being happy, because based on the skill description, this skill was very powerful.
Being good at cooking was a huge bonus.
If he had this skill earlier, he could have pretended his cooking equipment at home was broken, then gone to Minato's house to cook, showing off his extraordinary culinary skills. Perhaps Kushina and Minato would have actively befriended him then.
He could also quickly raise his disciples' favorability. Who wouldn't like a teacher who provided top-notch instruction and was also a master chef?
After his disciples finished their training, Muyue returned to the main district of Konoha early. He wanted to try how delicious the dishes made with his new skill would be.
Muyue chose two dishes: egg fried rice and tempura.
He had made egg fried rice before; he particularly liked dishes with eggs. He had never made tempura.
From the moment he picked up an egg, Muyue felt a mysterious sensation come over him. Although the steps were still similar to before, everything was just right.
After finishing the egg fried rice, Muyue was a little lost in thought, looking at the grains of rice, distinct and golden throughout, faintly emitting a golden light.
He wondered if he had put any fluorescent powder in it when he cooked; why did it seem to be glowing?
Muyue took a spoonful and tasted it. The tenderness of the egg, the elasticity of the rice, the freshness of the chopped green onions, all exploded in his mouth. He had never eaten such delicious egg fried rice.
Muyue even vaguely saw a strong chicken running and flying in a field, so free and exhilarating.
"It really is delicious enough to cause illusions," Muyue shook his head, quickly regaining his clarity.
Muyue switched to a frying pan and began preparing to make tempura.
First, he prepared the batter, then heated oil in the pan, coated the pre-processed shrimp in the batter, and put them into the hot oil.
Soon, the tempura's coating gradually changed color, and a unique frying aroma filled the kitchen, drifting far away.
Muyue intuitively scooped out the tempura, placed it on a plate, and carried it to the table.
Just as Muyue picked up a piece of tempura to taste it, a knock sounded at the door.
