Chapter 43: The Competition Begins
In the evening, at the Uchiha compound.
"Obito, don't eat so fast, you'll choke."
Hearing his grandmother's words, Obito slowed down his rice-shoveling speed and explained, "Grandma, a friend asked me to hang out."
"Which friend? Is it Rin?" Obito's grandmother asked, smiling at him.
Since Nohara Rin often came to play with Obito, Obito's grandmother also knew her.
"Yeah, but there are others too," Obito replied while eating.
The Genin Ninjutsu Competition was starting tomorrow, and he had been training hard all day, which had worn him out.
Perhaps because he and Kakashi would be rivals again tomorrow, Nohara Rin invited them to hang out tonight and relax.
Because Kakashi was coming, Obito also invited Might Guy along.
"I'm full." Obito wiped his mouth after finishing his meal and rushed out the door.
Obito's grandmother followed him to the entrance and said with a smile, "Good luck, Obito! I'm still hoping to see great-grandchildren!"
Obito almost stumbled and fell to the ground. He turned around, his face red, and shouted, "Grandma, I'm still in school!"
Although he did have some thoughts, he was still too young.
Everyone agreed to meet on a street in the southern part of the main city.
When Obito arrived, he found that the other three were already there; he was the last one.
"I ran into an old lady who needed help on the way, so I was a little late," Obito explained.
"You really do run into old ladies easily; it's like this every time," Kakashi felt this was somewhat unbelievable.
"I don't know either, but when you see an old lady who needs help, you can't just ignore her, right?" Obito felt a little wronged, because he really did help an old lady on the way.
"Alright, it's fine. Obito is probably just too kind and has a knack for finding people who need help," Nohara Rin said with a gentle smile, walking between the two with her hands behind her back.
After resolving this minor interlude, the four walked together down the street.
"So many people! Kakashi, how about we race to see who can get through the crowd faster?" Might Guy couldn't help but ask, looking at the dense crowd filling the street.
"I refuse," Kakashi decisively rejected, leaving Might Guy no room for fantasy. Such a challenge was too foolish.
"There's an event happening on this street today, that's why so many people are here," Nohara Rin explained.
Then, Nohara Rin led the three to the event location. The entire street was filled with vendors, brightly lit, and people in yukata walked together.
"Look, these goldfish are so cute!" Nohara Rin found a goldfish scooping stall and waved at everyone with a smile.
"Little sister, want to try? It's only ten Ryo for one net," the stall owner tempted.
"Ten Ryo, huh..." Nohara Rin showed a thoughtful expression. Ten Ryo wasn't much, but one net might not be enough; these paper nets broke too easily.
"I'll try." Obito volunteered, stepped forward, and handed the owner the money for one net.
Obito directly targeted the most active and beautiful fish. As a result, he netted it two or three times, didn't catch the fish, but the net broke.
"Again!" Obito wasn't discouraged and tried again, but still failed.
It wasn't until the ninth time that Nohara Rin directly stopped Obito with her hand and said, "Let's forget it, let's go browse somewhere else."
Eighty Ryo was enough to buy a bowl of ramen.
"But I've tried so many times, and I'm more skilled than before. Wouldn't it be a waste to stop now?" Obito hesitated.
"I want to play too!" Might Guy, who had never played before, rolled up his sleeves, ready to use all his strength to catch the fish in one go.
Splish, the stick holding the paper net broke directly.
"Let me do it," Kakashi said calmly, handed ten Ryo to the owner, and with a casual scoop, caught a goldfish.
"Here you go." Kakashi handed the packaged fish to Nohara Rin.
Nohara Rin smiled happily, "Thank you, Kakashi."
Then she added, "And thank you, Obito and Guy."
Obito, who had been sulking, immediately broke into a silly grin.
Next, the four played around, throwing shuriken at targets, identifying shadow clone originals...
After playing until the street gradually emptied, they bought some takoyaki and headed home.
"Kakashi, just you wait and see tomorrow. This time, first place will definitely be mine!" Obito took a bite of takoyaki, not forgetting to boast.
"If you want the first-place prize, I can get it and give it to you," Kakashi said with a surprising amount of aggression.
The two exchanged boasts, making Might Guy's blood boil. If there were a Genin Taijutsu Competition, he would definitely invite Kakashi for a good match.
...
The next day, being Sunday, there was no school.
The competition started in the afternoon, so Obito spent the morning doing his final training.
The Genin Ninjutsu Competition was held on a commercial street in the main district of Konoha.
Obito heard that it was organized by an old ninja shop owner to encourage academy students. Later, when others saw that it could attract crowds, they all chipped in to hold it, and it happened every year.
"Obito, which ninjutsu are you planning to use for the competition this time?" Nohara Rin asked.
"Great Fireball Jutsu," Obito didn't keep her guessing and told Nohara Rin directly.
"Aren't you going to use the Great Dragon Fire Jutsu you used in the last practical exam?" Nohara Rin was a bit confused.
The last time Obito lost to Kakashi, he used the Great Fireball, scoring thirty points out of a possible thirty, nine points lower than Kakashi.
"This time is different from last time. My Great Fireball Jutsu is very strong now!" Obito showed a confident expression. He believed his Great Fireball would definitely shock the entire audience.
"Hmm, then I'll look forward to your performance," Nohara Rin smiled gently.
"Obito, good luck. As my fated rival, that man isn't so easy to defeat," Might Guy said with his arms crossed, a profound expression on his face.
"Do you want me to leave?" Kakashi, who had been silent, spoke up.
How could they start discussing how to beat him right in front of him?
"Kakashi, what ninjutsu are you planning to use?" Nohara Rin immediately asked with a smile.
"I haven't decided yet. I'll just use whatever comes to mind then, maybe Earth Style: Earth Wall," Kakashi said after thinking for a moment.
This wasn't boasting, as he had mastered quite a few ninjutsu, and for this kind of competition, he really could just use whatever.
Obito looked around and saw many familiar faces from the ninja academy, and also two ninjas wearing headbands.
"There are a lot more people this time than last time," Obito said, recalling the previous competition.
"Because the prizes have increased, right? This time, the first place not only gets an exquisite silver-plated kunai but also a prize money of eight thousand Ryo," Nohara Rin said.
"Eight thousand Ryo!" Obito's eyes widened, and he became even more determined to win first place.
That was eight thousand Ryo! It would be easy to treat Rin to a meal or buy her a gift.
"The competition begins! Please, contestant number one, step onto the stage and perform."
