Chapter 153: CHAPTER 153 - Awakening the Tenseigan
Upon returning to the Land of Rain, Konan immediately informed Nagato of what had transpired in the Land of Fire.
"Those people were likely from Konoha's Root division—the same kind of shinobi who once allied with Hanzo," she said coldly. Of all things, this was something she would never forget. That fateful day had changed Akatsuki forever, and the culprits behind it were Hanzo and Danzo of Konoha.
"The shinobi of great nations have always acted with impunity, shifting their suffering onto others without a second thought," said Pain, his voice devoid of emotion. "Once our plan is in motion, I will return all the pain that has been inflicted upon the smaller nations. Only by experiencing, understanding, and truly knowing pain will they come to cherish peace. Once we gather all nine Tailed Beasts, the shinobi of the great nations will no longer dare to wage war so recklessly—only then can true peace be achieved."
Konan nodded silently at his words, though a thought suddenly crossed her mind. "Nagato, that masked man who calls himself Madara… he hasn't appeared for quite some time. Do you think he's up to something?"
"There's no need for concern. With these eyes, no petty schemes can succeed. Now that the Six Paths of Pain are complete, he poses no threat to Akatsuki."
Pain's response was calm and unwavering. Konan, however, quietly sighed in her heart.
Ever since unlocking the powers of the Rinnegan, Nagato had grown stronger—but his personality had also changed. Not only had he begun working with the masked man, but there were also signs that he had developed a certain disregard for the shinobi villages of the great nations. This was troubling.
And yet, within Akatsuki, Nagato was the only one who could truly change this flawed world. He carried Yahiko's dream, and to Konan, he was her only remaining companion. For that reason, she would continue to stand by him.
"How are our efforts to recruit new members progressing?"
Konan replied, "There is still no news on Orochimaru or Hyuga Mirai. Even Zetsu has been unable to track them down. However, the masked Madara has identified two candidates for recruitment—it will just take some time."
After a prolonged search, Akatsuki had recently brought in a new official member—Raiga Kurosuki. With him, Akatsuki's ranks had now grown to six.
As for Kakuzu's former partner, a shinobi from the Hidden Rain Village, he had been killed during a mission—by Kakuzu himself, who then turned him in for a bounty. In response, Nagato had assigned Raiga as Kakuzu's new partner.
With the addition of the members recommended by the masked man, Akatsuki's recruitment would soon be complete.
Meanwhile, in a secluded location, Zetsu suddenly appeared beside Obito, an eager grin on his face.
"Obito, Obito! I've uncovered a very well-hidden secret!" White Zetsu said excitedly, wearing a look that suggested he wanted Obito to guess.
"Did you find Orochimaru or Hyuga Mirai?" Obito asked. If either of them could be recruited, Akatsuki's plans to capture the Tailed Beasts could proceed much more swiftly.
"Not exactly, but here's a hint—it's about Konoha."
Black Zetsu suddenly interjected, "The Nine-Tails' Jinchuriki is about to give birth."
"Hey! You just ruined my fun!" White Zetsu protested, clearly annoyed. His rare moments of enjoyment were always spoiled by Black Zetsu.
The Nine-Tails' Jinchuriki… That's Sensei's wife.
Obito stood up abruptly. "When?"
White Zetsu, still sulking over the ruined surprise, sighed. "In about four months. One of my clones overheard the news in the Uchiha Clan's residence, and I confirmed it at Konoha Hospital."
Black Zetsu turned to Obito. "What do you plan to do?"
"Konoha has recovered its strength quickly after the war. This is the perfect opportunity to unleash the Nine-Tails within the village and weaken them," Obito said coldly.
Of everyone in Akatsuki, no one understood Konoha's power—or Kushina Uzumaki—better than him. She was a Jinchuriki who could forcibly suppress the Nine-Tails' chakra.
There were only two moments when the Nine-Tails could be extracted from Kushina: during childbirth or when a new Jinchuriki was being prepared.
The Uzumaki Clan's ability to control Tailed Beasts far surpassed that of other Jinchuriki. And with Konoha being the strongest of the Hidden Villages, this would be the only chance to take the Nine-Tails. If they missed it, they might have to wait until Kushina grew old and weak before another opportunity arose.
"Zetsu, increase surveillance on Konoha. Once the Nine-Tails' Jinchuriki goes into labor, I will extract the beast from her."
White Zetsu chuckled darkly. "No problem, Obito. Honestly, I'm looking forward to the show, heh heh."
"Enough nonsense. Do not make any mistakes with the intel," Obito said. With that, he vanished into his Kamui dimension.
"Got it!" White Zetsu replied. As soon as Obito left, he sank into the ground and disappeared.
Roran
Over the years, natural energy had accumulated within the Dragon Vein, and the unique magnetic field of Roran seemed to have altered it in some way.
The Three Serpent Princesses had taken up residence there, and none of them showed any desire to return to Ryūchi Cave. There was no one to serve them there, and besides, the natural energy in the Dragon Vein was far richer than in Ryūchi Cave.
Even just sleeping in the training chambers beside the Dragon Vein was more comfortable than staying in their original home.
Hyuga Mirai had made a significant breakthrough in his research on the Shikotsumyaku bloodline. He had successfully integrated its genetic traits into his own, increasing his total gene count to 673.
Based on his research, the original Ōtsutsuki gene count was estimated to be around 720. This meant that after fusing with the Shikotsumyaku bloodline, Hyuga Mirai was now incredibly close to achieving the purest form of the Ōtsutsuki lineage.
A perfect being capable of sealing the Ten-Tails without burden, stepping into the Six Paths realm, and living for millennia—this was the ultimate goal. If he could fully decipher the genetic sequence of the Ōtsutsuki, he would wield the power of creation itself, crafting beings that were nearly godlike.
"Kimimaro, today we'll begin your modifications. This will prevent the hereditary disease caused by the Shikotsumyaku."
Hyuga Mirai called for Kimimaro and had him lie on the operating table.
"Thank you, Lord Mirai."
Despite being only six or seven years old, Kimimaro was already remarkably composed. After expressing his gratitude, he obediently lay down without hesitation.
Hyuga Mirai first injected him with four doses of genetic modification serum before proceeding with an eye transplant. He implanted Hyuga Nichirin's Byakugan into Kimimaro. Thanks to his modified genetics, Kimimaro would be able to fully unleash the power of the Byakugan.
Once the surgery was complete, Hyuga Mirai reviewed the data and playback of the procedure. Satisfied, he nodded—everything had gone flawlessly.
"Alright, now let the serum work on your body. You'll need daily check-ups, but in two weeks, everything should be fine."
With a clap of his hands, he signaled for Kimimaro to be taken away.
Now that Kimimaro's genetic modifications were complete, it was time to refine his own genetic sequence.
Over the next two weeks, aside from monitoring Kimimaro's condition, Hyuga Mirai spent his time either training or mentoring Haku. There weren't many people in Roran he could rely on—the Three Serpent Princesses spent most of their time lounging near the Dragon Vein, seemingly in a perpetual post-meal lethargy.
Haku's bloodline held immense potential. Once the Ice Release was fully developed, it could be paired with Ryūchi Cave's Senjutsu, further amplifying its power.
Though Haku disliked bloodshed, his abilities could still be put to good use—such as safeguarding the Uzumaki Trade Association from Root's interference.
Kimimaro, once fully modified, would be returned to Orochimaru, but Haku would remain. Hyuga Mirai didn't have much time to personally train subordinates, but Haku had his own motivation to grow stronger.
Two weeks later, Kimimaro had fully adapted to the Byakugan. He noticed that using the Shikotsumyaku now felt significantly less taxing on his body, as if a heavy burden had been lifted.
"The genetic repair was successful, but using the Shikotsumyaku excessively in battle will still put strain on your body. When you return, train under Orochimaru in Yang Release chakra—it'll help reduce the toll combat takes on you."
After giving his instructions, Hyuga Mirai arranged for Kimimaro to return to the Land of Tea via a merchant ship.
With Kimimaro gone, it was time to focus on his own genetic enhancements.
He had run countless simulations and even tested the process on Kimimaro. Now, he was fully confident in his success.
Injecting himself with four doses of the Shikotsumyaku genetic serum, Hyuga Mirai quietly waited for his body to change.
For the first three days, he only experienced occasional itching—an indication that his bones were undergoing transformation.
By the sixth day, the itching subsided, but his appetite had increased drastically. He retreated to the Dragon Vein training chamber, absorbing natural energy to alleviate the intense hunger surging through his cells.
On the ninth day, he could freely control his bone growth, adjusting its density and even extending bones beyond his body as weapons. He had successfully awakened the Shikotsumyaku bloodline.
Even more fascinating was the realization that the Shikotsumyaku held latent potential far beyond what had been previously known—power that he would need to explore further.
By the twelfth day, the final dose had fully integrated. Suddenly, a sharp sensation surged through his eyes, followed by a dull throbbing pain. The discomfort only lasted a few minutes, but when it subsided, he immediately noticed a change.
His vision had transformed.
Staring into the mirror, Hyuga Mirai found himself mesmerized by the deep, star-like blue of his irises.
"I've awakened… the Tenseigan?"
A power far surpassing the Byakugan surged within him. He could feel his newfound ability to manipulate attraction and repulsion forces, to enter the Tenseigan Chakra Mode, and access many more abilities yet to be discovered.
But before he could fully process his new strength, another wave of pain struck his eyes. His vibrant blue pupils dimmed, fading back to the familiar pearly white of the Byakugan.
"Not enough ocular power… Even with Senjutsu chakra, I can only maintain the Tenseigan for a short time."
Hyuga Mirai gazed at his reflection, determination hardening in his eyes.
"The journey to the moon needs to be expedited."
