Chapter 46: CHAPTER 46 - On the Front Lines
The next morning, Vice Director Kimura was summoned to the Hokage Building. Ninja who had already sensed the looming war were aware of the situation's unusual nature. Hyuga Mirai had learned about the news a day earlier from the Hyuga clan, so he was not surprised. He had also made ample preparations for supplies, including shuriken, kunai, and explosive tags. He had long since prepared two sealing scrolls and had enough medical supplies and antidotes.
Now, it was just a matter of waiting for the orders from above.
With only a day or two until departure, Hyuga Mirai didn't continue his research. Instead, he cleaned up the Konoha Hospital laboratory, recording the data on various equipment before erasing them. He then arranged everything back to its original state according to memory. Even if someone were to investigate later, they would only find signs of equipment use, but no further information.
"System!" Hyuga Mirai activated his system, and a transparent panel appeared before him.
[Scientific Template System]
Host: Hyuga Mirai
Extract Function:
1. Genus
Status: (Loading 100%)
Traversal Function: Not enabled (Loading 23.5%)
"The second extraction opportunity is available, but this isn't a good time."
A few days ago, the extraction function had finished loading. At that time, Hyuga Mirai was documenting the fusion of his gene sequence, and he couldn't afford to spend an entire day loading another scientist's template knowledge. Besides, now that he was about to head to the front lines, even if he had good luck and acquired an excellent scientist's template, it wouldn't be of much use.
Mirai lacked materials and time, and even the laboratory was only available through mission achievements. In that aspect, he couldn't compare to Orochimaru. If he had the resources that Orochimaru had, not only could he have researched the Cells of Hashirama, but he could have also created powerful summon beasts and mutant creatures.
Soon, Vice Director Kimura returned to Konoha Hospital. As soon as she got back, she gathered all the medical ninjas and Hyuga Mirai. Although Mirai was still only a Chunin, his medical ninjutsu was excellent, to the point that even Kimura, despite her seniority, couldn't claim to be better in that field. The only area where she might have an advantage was chakra quantity, but that was something Mirai deliberately concealed. Otherwise, he would have already been promoted to a medical jonin at the age of eleven.
"Listen carefully. What I'm about to say must not leave this room," Kimura said, her face serious. After scanning the room, she continued, "The pressure on the borders is intense. There are two places with many injured soldiers, and they won't be able to make it back to the village in time. We need medical ninjas to go to the front lines for treatment."
As she spoke, Kimura laid out a map and pointed to a few locations. "According to the Hokage-sama, Iwagakure has sent 300 ninjas to the Land of Grass, and Sunagakure has selected the Fourth Kazekage and sent nearly 1,000 ninjas to the border."
Both places were facing the threat of war, and both were from the Five Great Shinobi Countries. The other ninjas in the room, except for Hyuga Mirai, couldn't help but show nervous expressions. Even though Konoha had many talented ninjas, facing attacks from two of the Five Great Nations at once would result in devastating consequences.
"I've decided to send twenty medical ninjas to Kikyo City and ten to Konoha Town. When you arrive, the front-line commanders will direct you," Kimura said.
Then she began selecting personnel. Since Sunagakure's puppeteers were known to be numerous and skilled with poisons, more medical ninjas were needed at Kikyo City. This time, it seemed that Sunagakure was determined to strike Konoha. Fortunately, Konoha had stocked up on supplies early, and this time, along with the medical ninjas, reinforcement troops would also be sent to the front lines.
Hyuga Mirai was assigned to Kikyo City. His research on cell genetics made him especially adept at researching antidotes. Once the personnel for the front lines were chosen, Kimura ordered everyone to disperse to deliver the news, and Hyuga Mirai left to prepare.
As soon as he returned home and before he could even make tea, he felt the reverse summoning technique calling him. It was a signal—a method that he and Orochimaru had used for communication.
"Summoning Technique."
Hyuga Mirai quickly drew a small cut on his palm, formed the necessary hand seals, and pressed his hand to the ground. With a pop, a white snake appeared in front of him.
The snake spat out a scroll from its mouth, which it then unsealed, before it deactivated the summoning technique.
"Do you want me to visit your lab?" The scroll didn't contain much information. Perhaps Orochimaru had many things to communicate, and one scroll couldn't contain it all.
After thinking for a moment, Mirai destroyed the scroll and left his house, heading straight to Orochimaru's laboratory.
With his Byakugan, no one in Konoha could track him. After integrating Hashirama's cells into his own, Mirai could even sense the faintest gaze from others. He made several twists and turns, changed his appearance, and eventually arrived at Orochimaru's lab.
He had been here several times, so he was familiar with the seals protecting the lab. This time, after touching the seal, Orochimaru did not come to greet him. Mirai waited a little while and then walked in on his own.
"Looks like Kabuto isn't here," Mirai thought, checking the area with his Byakugan. He made his way straight to Orochimaru's main lab.
"Orochimaru, you summoned me because... is this the latest model of the cultivation machine?" Mirai asked as he walked in, noticing the three-meter-tall machine filled with cell culture liquid, where an embryo was slowly developing within the glass tank.
"Mirai-kun, you've received orders to go to the front lines too, haven't you?" Orochimaru said, his face calm. But Mirai could sense a hint of displeasure in his voice.
Researchers hate being interrupted, especially when Orochimaru had just discovered a new breakthrough. Judging by the shape of the embryo, it was likely a clone, perhaps even a clone of his own or of Senju Hashirama.
"I received orders this afternoon to follow the support troops to Kikyo Mountain and then wait for further instructions from the front-line commander," Mirai replied.
Orochimaru paused when he heard about Kikyo Mountain, then chuckled. "It seems like you'll have to follow my orders then. Would you like me to take care of you?"
