Chapter 53: CHAPTER 53 - Mission to Eliminate the Enemy

It had only been two days since Hyuga Mirai's team had begun their patrol mission, when they received new orders. They were to join forces with other teams to locate and eliminate all the Sand ninja reconnaissance agents outside the village. After completing the extermination task, they were to ambush and eliminate the Sand ninja who had fled to a designated location.

After the mission details were thoroughly explained, the Third Hokage assigned Sarutobi Jū to lead the operation. Sarutobi Jū, a special Jonin from the Sarutobi clan, was skilled in Body Flicker and swordsmanship, making him highly effective in close combat. However, his proficiency in ninjutsu and genjutsu was somewhat lacking.

Being a special Jonin meant that Sarutobi Jū excelled in one particular field to the point of reaching Jonin-level standards, but he had obvious weaknesses, which made him vulnerable to being targeted by enemies. Nonetheless, he was a rare and valuable asset to Konoha. While full Jonin had the right to attend important village meetings, special Jonin were just a step below, though they had more authority than Chunin. If they could cover their shortcomings, they were often promoted to full Jonin.

This time, Sarutobi Jū would be leading the team alongside three of his lower-ranked subordinates from the Sarutobi clan, as well as Hyuga Mirai's team and another Chunin team. Among the ten-member team, Sarutobi Jū was the only special Jonin, with four Chunin, and the remaining five were lower-ranking ninjas. However, these five lower-ranking ninjas weren't fresh graduates from the Ninja Academy; they had been on missions for two to three years and had a good level of coordination with one another. These lower-ranking ninjas were experienced enough to use a couple of C-rank ninjutsu and could deliver powerful strikes using kunai, shuriken, and explosives.

After introductions, Sarutobi Jū gathered everyone before departure and issued a stern warning:

"Listen carefully, everyone. Although this is a temporary mission, all of you must follow my orders without exception. Any disobedience or arrogance will result in failure, and that failure will fall squarely on the shoulders of the one who defies my commands."

Before the mission had even begun, Sarutobi Jū subtly indicated his target, and judging by the visible displeasure on Hyuga Kiyo's face, it was clear who he was referring to. The other team was simply a regular Chunin squad composed of three civilian ninjas with no background. They mostly handled C-rank missions.

On the other hand, Hyuga Mirai's team was made up entirely of eleven-year-old Chunin. They were talented members from the Hyuga Clan, the genius of the Main House, a medical ninja with a renowned reputation from the Branch House, and a girl exceptionally skilled in genjutsu.

Graduating at six years old, they had quickly risen to Chunin rank in just a few years. Recently, they had completed an A-rank reconnaissance mission with exceptional performance. Hyuga Mirai's team had gained quite a reputation in Konoha. Unlike Kakashi's lone-wolf attitude, their team was cooperative, and in many ways, could already be compared to the elite Jonin teams of the village. However, Sarutobi Jū didn't know much about them.

In Sarutobi Jū's eyes, having such a talented team could be troublesome. The more gifted someone was, the harder they were to work with. These talented individuals often had strong personal beliefs. He had a friend who had teamed up with Kakashi before, and the results were less than harmonious.

Hyuga Mirai stepped forward and positioned herself in front of Hyuga Kiyo, offering a polite smile. "Sarutobi-sensei is right. In this mission, we must follow the team leader's orders, with the success of the mission as our top priority."

"Very well then." Sarutobi Jū glanced at Hyuga Mirai, a slight change in his expression. He suddenly found this boy unusually composed, with none of the typical arrogance that often came with youthful prodigies.

"Now, let's discuss the mission. We have two long-range reconnaissance ninjas, and the target location is here," Sarutobi Jū continued, pulling out a map and slowly outlining the details of the operation.

The ten-member team, consisting of one special Jonin, four Chunin, and five lower-ranked ninjas, was well-equipped for a task like this. In a typical encounter with a Sand ninja reconnaissance squad, they could easily overwhelm them.

After laying out the plan, Sarutobi Jū glanced at Hyuga Mirai and the other team leader, seeking their input.

"Do you have any objections?" he asked.

Hyuga Mirai considered for a moment before answering, "I have no objections. Sarutobi-sensei's plan is solid. Though it may take a bit longer, it's a foolproof approach that reduces the risk of failure."

"I agree," said the Chunin team leader. "We've handled plenty of C-rank missions, but this is our first time with a war-related task."

"Alright, then it's settled. We'll proceed in a bird formation and head out." Sarutobi Jū issued the order, and the three teams quickly split up. Hyuga Mirai's team was positioned as the spearhead, tasked with both scouting and engaging the enemy.

Without further delay, Hyuga Mirai's team set off along the predetermined route, leading the charge.

---

Along the way, Hyuga Kiyo couldn't help but mutter, "Tch, Sarutobi ninjas are so annoying!"

The implication had been clear earlier, and given that the two teams hadn't crossed paths before, it seemed unfair for Sarutobi Jū to already make assumptions about them. Hyuga Kiyo couldn't help but feel resentful.

Hyuga Mirai, ever the mediator, spoke calmly, "It's fine. After all, Kakashi's reputation for being difficult to work with has spread across Konoha's mission teams. Being in the same graduating class as him, we've probably been lumped together with him."

"Enemy Ahead!"

Hyuga Mirai's Byakugan immediately detected three Sand ninja about eight kilometers ahead, positioned directly in their path.

However, Mirai remained composed and waited until they were three kilometers closer before signaling Hyuga Kiyo, who would provide further details.

After covering some distance, when they reached the range of Hyuga Kiyo's Byakugan, she promptly spoke up, "Enemy spotted, southwest, 45 degrees, 3.3 kilometers, three Sand ninja."

"Kurenai, signal!"

Kurenai Yuhi nodded and responded, "Got it." She pulled out a long-range radio and quickly transmitted the information.

The intelligence about the enemy's location was sent out immediately. Hyuga Mirai's team halted and waited for the other two squads to catch up.

Upon hearing the report, Sarutobi Jū swiftly devised a kill plan, adjusting the formation of the ten-man team to ensure a complete encirclement, ensuring that no Sand ninja could escape, regardless of the direction they fled.

Given that the other team was weaker, there was a risk that the Sand ninja might target them as a breakthrough point, and it was important that no one escaped, especially if they had to fight desperately to break through.

After finalizing the plan, Hyuga Mirai's team divided into three squads and surrounded the enemy from all sides.

Sarutobi Jū led the main assault, drawing the Sand ninja's attention. The real threats were Hyuga Kiyo, skilled in Taijutsu, and Kurenai Yuhi, a master of Genjutsu. The remaining members would use ninjutsu, kunai, and explosive tags to create diversions.

The goal was to eliminate the enemy in under two minutes.
