Chapter 203: Chapter 202 – Forced Into Danger
Mangetsu's relentless taunting and ridiculous name-calling finally paid off.
Obito, entangled in a fight he couldn't shake off, was starting to find himself in real danger.
"Don't underestimate the power of the Uchiha's eyes, you ignorant Mist shinobi!"
Coming from the man who would one day orchestrate the massacre of the entire Uchiha Clan, those words carried an almost absurd irony.
Unfortunately, Mangetsu didn't know about that yet. If he had, he would've mocked Obito with even more enthusiasm.
"Your Sharingan's dojutsu is definitely more unique than what's commonly known... and then there's that legendary Wood Style."
He could hear the arrogance in the voice of this masked stranger who never dared show his face. Mangetsu sneered.
"But that doesn't mean people without special eyes are useless. Don't you think that's a bit ridiculous?"
After Rin's death, Obito no longer cared about the rules of the world or the pain within it. He stopped seeing the value in the lives of ordinary ninja—mere ants to him.
Yet now, one of those very 'ants' had backed him into a corner.
Obito's Mangekyō Sharingan allowed him to phase through attacks—but only for five minutes at a time.
Since the moment this Mist shinobi had caught onto his technique and dragged him into a drawn-out battle, half that time had already ticked away.
And that wasn't his only concern.
Though they weren't inside Kirigakure, they weren't far from it either.
"I ordered the other shinobi not to interfere in this fight."
Mangetsu could clearly see Obito's hesitation and wasted no time exploiting it.
"So, what should I call you… Uchiha?" he said mockingly. "Your abilities are too strange. Any shinobi without a trump card would just be throwing their life away fighting you."
Obito had come to the battlefield after hearing from White Zetsu that Kakashi and Rin were surrounded by Iwa-nin.
He had left Madara's underground hideout in a rage, only to arrive and see Rin die by Kakashi's hand—struck down by Chidori. In that fury, he slaughtered over a hundred Iwa shinobi on the spot.
That carnage had been possible thanks to the unstoppable force of Kamui, his Wood Style gifted by Hashirama's cells, and his now-enhanced body.
"If Yagura finds out I let one of our trained shinobi die so easily, he'll come after me with everything he's got."
Mangetsu grinned.
"Which is exactly why I came to fight you."
Obito gripped his wooden spear and charged in, abandoning his earlier evasive stance. He surged toward Mangetsu, who held twin blades.
Even a body that could liquefy to avoid physical attacks had to have a weakness somewhere.
Wood Style, combined with Fire Style, might force him to reveal it. The real Mangetsu had already escaped using a clone.
Obito's arm erupted into wooden branches, shredding through his sleeve and growing into a tree taller than a man, blocking the incoming attack.
He severed the tree instantly.
His foot slammed into the ground, shattering the earth as he spun and charged at the long-blade-wielding Mangetsu. That one—the wielder of the stitched, seamless-blade—was the real threat.
During their earlier clash, that weapon had proved to be the most dangerous: wide-range, no warning, and impossible to read.
The spear in Obito's hands pierced clean through the clone wielding the long blade, pinning it to the ground with overwhelming force. Branches exploded from the tip and sank deep into the earth, pinning the clone in place.
"Fire Style: Great Fireball!"
Flames roared to life, burning the pinned clone to ash.
But at that moment, the explosive-blade-wielding Mangetsu appeared behind Obito, swinging his weapon. As the blade cut through the air, orange sparks lit up along the steel.
BOOM!
The explosion tag embedded in the blade detonated, colliding with Obito's fireball. Fire engulfed both of them, the blaze soaring high into the sky.
Even the fireworks festival currently being held inside Kirigakure paled in comparison.
Feeling his two water clones vanish, Mangetsu—the real one—watched as Obito took them out within two exchanges.
"That level of physical power... even Kisame might lose to him."
Even so, Mangetsu's real body still had the edge in experience and swordsmanship.
The Hōzuki Clan's Water Clones retained about 80% of the user's strength—far more formidable than the common clones that held just a tenth.
Yet even they weren't enough to stand against Obito.
The real Mangetsu weaved hand seals.
"Water Style: Water Wall!"
A torrent of water surged out, dousing the flames. From within the waves, two clones emerged, retrieving the long-blade Needle and the explosive-blade Splash from where they'd fallen.
Mangetsu himself leapt into the water, liquefying and surging forward to attack. He clashed with Obito in close quarters, blade after blade slicing through the wooden spears and barriers Obito summoned for defense.
Eventually, his entire body—sword included—phased clean through Obito.
"Hiramekarei: Unleashed!"
Mangetsu spun in the surf and brought the Hiramekarei crashing down.
Obito phased just in time.
Again.
No new tricks. Mangetsu was starting to think he'd seen everything this Uchiha had to offer.
He had a solid grasp of his opponent's capabilities.
Neither Obito's strength nor vitality, not even his Wood or Fire Style, posed a critical threat.
And as long as Mangetsu avoided eye contact, the Uchiha's infamous genjutsu was completely useless.
The only thing preventing Mangetsu from landing a finishing blow was that damned phasing technique.
Still, the real Mangetsu and both his clones now attacked in tandem, each wielding one of the Seven Ninja Swords. Obito was forced to stay intangible almost constantly just to stay alive.
Attack after attack landed on nothing but air, and Mangetsu was starting to get annoyed.
Luckily, trash talk was his specialty.
"You're really afraid of dying, huh? But don't even think about running. We're in the territory of Kirigakure. The longer this goes, the worse it gets for you. Sure, weaker shinobi won't join in... but that's not a guarantee."
Every word landed like a jab, needling at Obito as his five-minute timer neared its end.
"And I can't guarantee that someone stronger than me won't show up after hearing the commotion."
Obito froze mid-step.
In that moment, the Needle blade pierced his body—and this time, it hit.
But Mangetsu immediately sensed something was wrong. A massive, terrifying surge of chakra erupted from Obito's body.
He yanked his sword free and leapt back without hesitation.
...
Back inside Kirigakure—
The Executioner's Blade that hung behind Zabuza's back suddenly vanished—summoned away.
Only one person could do that: the one holding the summoning scroll for all Seven Ninja Swords—Mangetsu.
Zabuza felt a sudden lightness across his back.
Then he remembered Mangetsu's cocky parting words and gave a small, derisive laugh.
"Heh."
Yagura, chewing on a takoyaki skewer, raised an eyebrow.
"What the hell... didn't he say it was a small matter? Why the hell is he using the Executioner's Blade?"
And not just that one.
If the Executioner's Blade was summoned, that meant the Blunt Blade and Thunder Blade were probably gone too.
Right now, Mangetsu had three of the Seven Ninja Swords in hand. But in truth, he'd trained with all seven after borrowing the others from their respective wielders.
The time he'd spent with them was short, not enough to claim mastery—but enough to use them in combat.
A creeping sense of unease washed over Yagura.
This wasn't right.
He knew how strong Mangetsu was. For him to go all-out like this... the enemy must be far from ordinary.
If all seven blades were on the field, things had escalated.
"Brother, brother!"
Little Suigetsu tugged at his sleeve.
Yagura stuffed another takoyaki into the boy's mouth, then shoved both him and the remaining snacks into Zabuza's arms.
Zabuza, now holding both Suigetsu and Haku's hand, opened his mouth to complain—but froze when he saw the grim seriousness on Yagura's face.
"I'll go find him. Zabuza, alert every available shinobi. Move—now!"
Yagura had just remembered something—someone he'd only recently discussed with the ninken hounds.
And the more he thought about it, the more likely it seemed.
Only he could force Mangetsu into such a prolonged battle.
Without waiting for anyone else to respond, Yagura vanished in a flash, racing in the direction Mangetsu had taken.
