Chapter 12: A Tree With No Roots

Tsunade didn't speak.

What could she even say?

The longer she listened, the more her heart twisted. Because beneath Shisui's words… was Undeniable truth.

And the worst part? She couldn't refute it.

She had seen it too. Her sensei—Hiruzen Sarutobi. Once revered. Now exposed.

A man who had preached peace while quietly feeding the flames. A leader who spoke of the Will of Fire… but burned others to keep it alight.

She looked down at her hands—her fists clenched.

The Senju Clan… gone.

Her uncle. Her cousins. Her brothers. All dead. One by one.

And now, only she remained.

Tsunade Senju—the last leaf on a tree chopped at its roots.

She hadn't even realised her hand was trembling until she felt the heat behind her eyes.

Was it anger? Or grief?

Maybe both.

Sensing the shift in her chakra, Shisui spoke—calm, but firm.

"Don't think about attacking the village."

"Just… keep doing what you've been doing. Stay away. Don't go back."

Tsunade scoffed.

A sneer pulled at her lips.

"Funny. You want me to destroy Konoha … and you don't even want me to return?"

He didn't deny it.

"I do want Konoha destroyed," he said, voice even. "But that doesn't mean I want you to die with it."

Then Shisui inhaled slowly, letting the words fall with gravity.

"My eyes… were Mangekyō."

Tsunade's eyes widened. She had seen many things in her life. But this?

This caught her off-guard.

Even she hadn't expected that.

"There were only six people who knew about it including me," he continued. "Danzo. The Third. Koharu. Homura. I told those four"

"My ability… Kotoamatsukami. The power to alter a person's will completely… without them ever realising it."

He gave a hollow smile.

"I was planning to use it on my clan. To stop the coup. To change their hearts—silently, painlessly. No bloodshed. No war."

A pause.

"But Danzo attacked me. Took my eye."

Tsunade's blood ran cold.

Shisui's voice darkened.

"The Third knew. He had to. But he didn't act. Didn't even question it. Tactically approved, most likely. Deny it all later. That was always his way."

Tsunade's expression twisted in disbelief.

"You… fool," she muttered. "Why the hell would you tell those old dogs about your Mangekyō?"

Shisui didn't answer right away. When he did, his voice was soft.

"Because I believed in him."

His words dropped like a blade.

"In the Will of Fire. In Sarutobi. I thought… he'd protect the village. Protect us."

He looked down at his hands.

"But by the time I saw the truth… it was too late."

There was a silence.

"Anyway… don't go back just to end up like one of those loyal dogs sitting at Sarutobi's feet or Danzo's."

His tone shifted, the edge returning.

"There's still a chance that the Third ordered Danzo to hand the eye over to him. So no, I don't trust either of them. And neither should you."

In anime it didn't happen but theres no guarantee it will not happen here.

Tsunade's mouth curled into something halfway between a scoff and a sigh.

"Don't worry," she muttered. "I'm not going back. Not anytime soon."

Shisui gave a small nod.

In truth, with his memories now restored, there were many mistakes he could have avoided—one of them being the decision to tell Tsunade the truth. But no matter how much of his past life had returned, the years spent living as Shisui Uchiha hadn't simply vanished. That kindness still lingered in him, like embers refusing to die out. And so, even now, he chose to show decency to those who had stood by him.

Tsunade had helped him survive—intentionally or not—and that was enough.

That was why he hadn't silenced her when she learned too much.

But Shisui held a different truth beneath the surface.

Because at the end of the day, he had a mission. And if Tsunade—Senju blood or not—chose to stand in his way, chose to defend the rot he intended to burn away…

Then mercy would no longer be a choice.

Not even for her.

"Then I'll leave tomorrow," Shisui said, breaking the long, heavy silence between them.

Tsunade's brows furrowed at once. "You need more rest."

Of course she would say that. She was a medic-nin, a legendary one at that. She could tell just from his movements—the stiffness, the subtle winces—that his wounds hadn't fully mended.

"You're still healing."

"I know," Shisui replied quietly, shaking his head. "But I don't have the luxury of time."

There was a finality in his tone that left no room for argument.

Tsunade sighed, resigned. "Do whatever you want. It's not like I could stop you."

She looked away, then added more softly, "Still… be careful. Without your eyes, you're not the same as before."

Shisui nodded.

"I know."

And he did. Better than anyone.

Genjutsu had once been his pride—his sharpest blade. Without his Mangekyō, that strength had dulled. It was like a painter losing colour.

In the hierarchy of shinobi, he was now just a jōnin. No longer the spectre in the mist. No longer the whisper of illusion that haunted enemy minds.

But even so, just a jōnin was still more than enough.

Enough to move. Enough to act. Enough to kill if needed.

And right now, that was all he needed.

"Where will you be going?"

"Kusagakure"

"If he were to travel to the Marvel universe, what else could he do besides learning magic from Kamar-Taj?"
