Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Everyone Passes – Team 7 Is Formed!
Naruto knew Kakashi only said he passed to lower his guard and test him further on how he viewed his teammates.
If he hadn't come from another world, he might've actually fallen for Kakashi's trick!
After giving his instructions, Kakashi left with an excuse—but Naruto was sure he was still hiding nearby.
"What a sneaky guy."
Naruto muttered under his breath, then picked up one lunch box and started eating, ignoring Sasuke and Sakura's hungry stares.
After finishing about half of it, Naruto suddenly stood up, grabbed the second lunch box, and walked over to Sasuke. He yanked the rope off Sasuke without a word.
"What… what are you doing?" Sasuke looked at Naruto, confused.
"Eat. If you don't eat now, you won't stand a chance at getting those bells this afternoon."
Naruto placed the untouched lunch box in Sasuke's hands, then walked over to Sakura, untied her, and gave her the half-eaten one.
"But… if you do this, won't you be disqualified too, Naruto?" Sakura held the lunch, wanting to eat but too scared to.
Even though she used to dislike Naruto, she couldn't help but be moved by what he just did.
"You two are idiots."
Leaning against a wooden post, Naruto said calmly, "Haven't you figured it out yet? What's the point of this test?"
"Teamwork?"
Sakura said without thinking, then suddenly realized—
Could it be...
"That's right. We're a team. There's no way only I could graduate. Kakashi didn't say all that just to warn you. He said it to fool me too."
Naruto added with a hint of sarcasm, "Tch, such a boring trick."
Sasuke stayed silent for a moment, then opened the lunch box and started eating.
Sakura followed, and as she ate, she softly said to Naruto, "I'm sorry... for how I treated you before."
"The past is the past."
Naruto didn't want to hear any touching speeches.
As long as she stopped being annoying, he didn't care.
"Thank you, Naruto."
Seeing how generous Naruto was, Sakura felt even guiltier.
She was really starting to regret how she used to treat him.
Turns out Naruto was such a good guy—why had she been so biased against him?
She had no idea that the Naruto standing before her had already completely replaced the bad image of the old Naruto in her mind.
The old Naruto was a loser—loud, annoying, and always playing dumb pranks.
The Naruto now? Cool, talented, and no longer chasing after her.
So really… it's not that she didn't dislike Naruto anymore. She just didn't dislike this Naruto.
"Hey, Naruto."
While eating, Sasuke suddenly asked, "How did you get so strong?"
Sakura looked curious too. "Yeah, Naruto. You've totally changed... You're nothing like before."
"People change. As for my strength… I recently awakened a special kind of power." Naruto answered calmly.
"Special power? You mean that glowing thing you can do?" Sakura asked.
"Yeah."
Naruto held up one finger and formed a beam of light on it. "The power of light."
"Light? Is that a chakra type too?" Sakura tried to recall but couldn't remember Iruka ever mentioning a light element.
"Sort of."
Naruto's light ability actually came from the Glint-Glint Fruit. It used stamina, not chakra.
But he wasn't going to tell anyone the truth.
——
Just then, a puff of smoke exploded.
Kakashi suddenly appeared in front of the three of them, staring coldly at Naruto. "Naruto, didn't I tell you not to let them eat?"
"You actually broke my rule. Do you not want to graduate?"
As he spoke, Kakashi formed some hand signs. The sky grew dark with thunderclouds and lightning flashed.
If someone didn't know better, they'd think Enel had arrived!
But even if it was Enel, Naruto wouldn't be scared.
He stared at Kakashi without expression, not feeling anything inside. "Didn't you say we're a team? If they can't pass this afternoon, then I can't graduate either, right?"
"So you figured it out… Still, even if that's true, you can't just break my rules. Here, my rules are the rules!"
Kakashi pretended to be angry. "So you're out, Uzumaki Naruto!"
"No! Kakashi-sensei!"
Sakura quickly said, "We were the ones who insisted on eating. It had nothing to do with Naruto. If someone has to be disqualified, let it be us!"
"Yeah, it wasn't Naruto's fault," Sasuke added.
"You think I'm blind? I watched the whole thing!"
Kakashi narrowed his eyes at the two of them. "And because Naruto broke the rules, you two are disqualified too!"
The moment he said that, Sakura and Sasuke both froze.
"Fine, then we're out! We're a team. If we pass, we pass together. If we fail, we fail together!" Sakura gave up and stood beside Naruto.
Sasuke silently put down his bento and joined Naruto too, showing where he stood.
"You three!!!"
Kakashi seemed furious—then suddenly broke into a smile like the sun coming out after rain. "Congrats, you've passed the test!"
"W-We passed? But we didn't even get the bells," Sakura said in surprise.
"The bells were never the real goal. Naruto understood that from the start. Whether it was the two-bell trap or me pretending he passed early to throw him off—none of it worked on him. Gotta give him credit for that."
"As for you two, if you hadn't stood by Naruto just now, I would've still failed all three of you. Naruto took the risk of being disqualified to help you both with the bell task this afternoon."
"If you don't trust your teammates, if you can't stick together, you don't deserve to be called ninjas."
Sasuke and Sakura looked at Naruto, full of gratitude.
If it weren't for Naruto, they probably wouldn't have passed this test at all.
"We did it! We're finally real ninjas now!!!"
Sakura cheered, "To celebrate Team 7 being official, let's go out and eat!"
"I'll pass," Naruto said.
"Why?" Sakura asked, clearly disappointed.
"I don't have any money," Naruto replied flatly.
"No worries, it's on me today!" Kakashi smiled.
He knew about Naruto's situation and that the Third Hokage didn't give him much money to live on, so he decided to pay for this meal.
"Really? You're the best, Kakashi-sensei!" Sakura said, jumping with joy.
"Ah, it's just a meal, no big deal,"
Kakashi said casually.
But half an hour later, the three of them were sitting at Ichiraku Ramen, looking confused.
"Eh? We're just eating this?"
"Ah, that black cat this morning might've stolen my wallet~"
"Oh well, Ichiraku ramen tastes pretty good anyway."
"I'm digging in… wait, Kakashi-sensei, how are you gonna eat with that mask on?"
