Naruto: The Senju Patriarch

Chapter 29: [BONUS] : Vengeance

Keeping up his Thunderclap impulse, he used Sakumo's Kenjutsu and Shunpo, which had made him famous, to reap the lives of the enemy shinobi, cutting through them like they were butter. Occasionally he would use Ninjutsu with shadow clones, sending off Wind Style: Wind Cutters like a sword slash, or Water Style: Water Severing Wave and Fire, Water and Earth Dragon Bullet Jutsus all around him. The display of a god-like Katsuro moving so quickly between the ranks, firing off Ninjutsu and using his Kenjutsu, completely demoralised the Iwa shinobi, especially after he had taken care of their Jinchuriki with no harm.

He was like a spectre moving between dimensions, unable to be hit. Dodging, deflecting, destroying, he took hundreds of lives of enemy shinobi, but made a point to save Konoha shinobi and particularly Senju clan shinobi whenever he could, stopping fatal blows, taking care of enemies or even leaving shadow clones to heal them with the Mystical Palm Jutsu. Katsuro had even recently applied the principle behind the Chakra scalpel, to his lightning nature enhancement on his sword giving it even more cutting power, easily able to slice through rocks, boulders and even steel. This meant that with enough power, and if they blocked insufficiently, Katsuro could just cut through an enemy's kunai or sword to get to them, increasing his lethal efficiency. To the other shinobi on the battlefield, enemy or ally- it didn't matter- Katsuro looked like both a God and a Shinigami. Saving his allies across the battlefield, while simultaneously decimating enemy ninja. At some point he also summoned Lady Katsuyu, seeing the giant slug pop in and then become small versions healing Konoha shinobi brought back flashbacks of Hashirama Senju to those who remembered.

Eventually, Iwa called for a retreat. Some Jonin attempted to hold back Orochimaru and Uchiha Tajima, allowing the 5 Tails to escape, with but with the cost of serious injuries or by simply sacrificing their own lives.

But even with this, Konoha had thoroughly won this battle. As the Iwa shinobi retreated, Orochimaru ordered them not to be pursued, considering they still had a large fighting force. But once they had truly gone, the Leaf ninja celebrated the sudden and unexpected but major victory.

Katsuro had a moment to himself. He was covered in blood despite the rain, still holding his sword, surrounded by bodies. He looked upwards, past the rain and clouds, looking past them for something or someone.

He had done what he had set out to do, he had gotten vengeance for Nawaki, his debt was paid by him and the Senju in full. Yet his heart was not at ease, he had taken the lives of hundreds - no thousands of Iwa ninja, the vast majority of which did not have anything to do with his death. But it did nothing, it would not bring him back. Katsuro knew this beforehand, but hoped this would at least let Nawaki's soul rest easy.

Nawaki… I have avenged you. He laughed to himself bitterly, you probably would not have wanted this but you'll be glad a lot less Konoha shinobi have to die. I hope you can rest in peace.

Katsuro thought back to his sensei's words, urging him to lose his naivety. Is this what he meant? I killed so many… Katsuro looked down at his hands, despite them now being clean it was as if blood was still on them. I am not a good person… I know this, but I don't regret it. I'll do whatever it takes to protect my people and those I care about.

Katsuro clenched his fist, looking up to the skies once again. Watch over me, Mum… Dad.. Uncle… Granny… Nawaki…

Katsuro straightened up, set his shoulders back, and raised his chin.

Katsuro walked back to the main force, and when they spotted him, the shinobi cheered loudly, shouting, praising, staring at him in reverence. For a brief moment, Katsuro thought to himself, sombre.

Those men and women had families too…

But the thought left as quickly as it had come. The Konoha shinobi weren't heartless - they did not cheer because they had killed the Iwa shinobi - they cheered for their victory, because victory was what mattered. This victory meant that they lived for another day - this victory meant that Konoha lived for another day, and with that, the friends and family that they fought for. Katsuro smiled. Even though the war wasn't won yet, he felt as though he could breathe just a little easier, knowing his home, and the Senju clan in particular, were safe for now.

The celebrations soon died down, however - after all, there are no breaks in war. As the majority of the force left to tend to their wounds and rest for the next battle, Katsuro stayed behind with a couple of others, and collected the bodies of the fallen Konoha shinobi, hoping not to see any Senju, and to find survivors.

It took a long time to collect all of the bodies, but it was eventually done, and the embalming process was underway. Luckily for Katsuro, he found no Senju bodies, but at the same time, there were people he knew… friends, comrades, loved ones… He felt a twinge of remorse and a small amount of guilt at seeing the corpses line the floor. He recognised some of the shinobi - these were people he had grown up around for all of his life, some of them people he called friends. What was worse, however, was the amount of bodies he didn't - no, couldn't - recognise. Many of the bodies were missing digits, limbs, and some had been destroyed even beyond that, with burns and wounds that suggested that these shinobi had died in agony, to the point that it would be hard for even their families to recognise them.

Katsuro stepped back and turned away, shuddering at the cruelty of war. But someone caught his eye. Orochimaru stood, staring at the bodies, rigid and emotionless, and Jiraiya stood behind him, this was both of their first wars as well. When they saw him they nodded in respect, surprised and grateful for the power he had revealed. Katsuro left them alone - they needed some space not pointless words, and so did he.

Katsuro stepped back outside, into the rain, and he was surprised to see a familiar figure already there. Uchiha Fugaku stood alone, staring at the battlefield. Katsuro remembered seeing Fugaku on the battlefield - his now fully matured Sharingan, Genjutsu prowess, Ninjutsu and Uchiha style Taijutsu made him a force to be feared and avoided.

The ground was still littered with bodies - the Iwa shinobi - and there were far more of them than there were of Konoha's. He walked up to Fugaku, and the 2 of them stood side by side for a while, in silence. They were friends once again united by war and loss.

They stood together for a while in a solemn but not uncomfortable silence.

Uchiha Tajima watched his son, the future Patriarch and the Senju clan's very own. He was someone who typically saw the Senju as their rivals, perhaps even enemies. But recently, this had been overshadowed by the Hokage faction, who carried Tobraima's will. Seeing the thoughts, words and actions of Katsuro Tajima understood, he was not Tobirama. He did not see the Uchiha as evil or the enemy, he saw them as they were. People. Many were arrogant, many were cruel, but many were also kind. They laughed, cried, lived and died. Tajima's mouth involuntarily curled into a small smile.

If it can't be us, I wouldn't mind if he were to be the Hokage.
