Naruto: The Tale of an Otsutsuki

Chapter 168: Chapter 168: Jiraiya's Thoughts

After launching the Sunshine Spear at the retreating Black Zetsu and White Zetsu, Kirito continued carrying Jiraiya on his shoulders. He made his way to the tallest tower in Amegakure—the same tower where they had first encountered Pain.

As he passed through the ruins left by their battle, Kirito was surprised that none of the Amegakure ninja seemed interested in investigating the area. Despite the massive clash between him, Jiraiya, and Pain—including Pain's use of the Chibaku Tensei—no one had interfered.

[I can't tell if they're overly confident in Pain or just completely uninvolved.]

With that thought, Kirito arrived at the top of the tower, facing a heavy, imposing door.

Boom! He kicked the door open, stepping into a dimly lit hall.

One side of the hall featured sofas and tables, while the other opened onto a rooftop overlooking the entire village. In the center of the room, a solitary figure stood in the shadows, silently observing him.

"They've already left?" Kirito muttered. The barrier in the room had blocked him from sensing its occupants earlier.

Seeing that Konan was alone in the hall and that Nagato was nowhere to be found, Kirito realized that Nagato had already retreated.

Unlike in the original timeline, where Nagato had stayed to reason with Naruto after his defeat, this time, he had chosen to flee after Pain's loss.

"Nagato has a greater mission. He cannot remain here," Konan said coldly, raising her hand. Pieces of paper began to float through the room.

"Konan…" Jiraiya, regaining consciousness, murmured weakly. "Are you really determined to follow this path?"

Noticing that Jiraiya had woken up, Kirito immediately dumped him off his shoulders, letting him hit the ground with a thud.

"Ouch!" Jiraiya groaned. "I'm an injured man! Can't you show some consideration for an old sage?"

"Master Jiraiya, everything we do is for peace," Konan replied.

As she spoke, the walls, floors, furniture, and decorations began to dissolve into countless sheets of paper marked with explosive symbols. Even Konan herself transformed into a figure of fluttering paper.

"It's a paper clone," Jiraiya muttered, recognizing the technique instantly.

"Goodbye, Master Jiraiya," Konan said as her last remaining paper face disintegrated.

Hisssss!

In an instant, all the explosive tags ignited simultaneously.

"Wait—!"

Boom! Boom! Boom!

The hall was consumed by a chain of powerful explosions. Flames and thick smoke engulfed the entire tower, obscuring Kirito and Jiraiya's figures completely.

The deafening blasts echoed throughout Amegakure, sending waves of fear and curiosity rippling through its inhabitants. However, due to warnings previously issued by "Angel," none dared approach or investigate.

Some speculated it was an attack by Hanzo's remnants, while others believed it was an experiment by their divine leaders. Whatever the reason, the villagers trusted their Angel and God to resolve the situation.

After nearly two minutes of relentless explosions, the towering structure that had once been Amegakure's tallest building was reduced to rubble. Only fragments of concrete walls and a few twisted, charred pipes remained.

As the smoke cleared, a large black sphere hovered silently in the air where the hall had once been. Slowly, the sphere descended and settled gently on the scorched ground.

With a hum, the sphere unfolded to reveal Kirito and Jiraiya, unharmed. The black orb shrank to the size of a ping-pong ball and floated into Kirito's outstretched hand.

"Once again, I've failed," Jiraiya said with a self-deprecating laugh, gazing at the spot where Konan had vanished. "I always fail to bring back those who've lost their way… and I always end up watching them fall deeper into the abyss."

Sensing Jiraiya's despair, Kirito quickly changed the subject. "Master Jiraiya, when you get the chance, don't forget to let the Toad Sages know you're safe."

"Of course!" Jiraiya replied. "Even if you didn't say anything, I would've gone back to Mount Myoboku anyway. I now fully understand that I'm no match for Pain. Without you, I'd have died here for sure."

Seeing no further reason to linger in Amegakure, Jiraiya glanced at the sky before turning to leave the ruins.

As they walked, he began to speak, as if to himself. "When I was sealed by that strange technique, I came to a realization: Nagato is not the 'Child of Prophecy' the Great Toad Sage spoke of. He's not the one destined to change the world."

Jiraiya's mind drifted to a sunny, determined figure—the boy who had once followed him around tirelessly. Smiling faintly, he continued, "Now, I'm certain it's Naruto. He's the 'Child of Prophecy.' Only he can change the world."

He sighed. "But his strength is nowhere near enough right now. He's not ready to face Pain. Since I'm still alive, I've decided to take him to Mount Myoboku and personally train him in Sage Mode. Only then will he have a chance against Pain."

Kirito nodded in agreement. "If Naruto learns Sage Mode, it'll definitely make a difference. He'll be thrilled to train under you."

To Kirito, Naruto's growth might differ from the original timeline. Without Jiraiya's death to serve as motivation, Naruto might not reach the same heights. However, Jiraiya's guidance could forge a different, but equally strong, path for him.

As they exited the village, Jiraiya glanced back at the ruins. "The Great Toad Sage said my mission was to find and guide the 'Child of Prophecy.' That means my purpose now is to teach and guide Naruto."

With a soft rumble of thunder, heavy rain began to fall once more in Amegakure. Even without Pain's intervention, the village seemed eternally drenched.

Donning raincoats, Kirito and Jiraiya walked through the rain-soaked streets, heading back toward the Land of Fire. Soon, their figures disappeared into the downpour.
