Chapter 167: Chapter 167: Black Zetsu's Anxiety
As the two Toad Sages vanished, Jiraiya's Sage Mode also dissipated, and the toad-like features on his body gradually faded away.
Before Jiraiya's Sage Mode completely dissipated, Kirito absorbed a small amount of his Sage Chakra. He wanted to study what made Mount Myoboku's Sage Art unique.
In the original lore, the three great Sage Lands each had their unique Sage Art, but they also came with specific side effects.
Mount Myoboku's Sage Art involved using the unique toad oil to sense natural energy and enter Sage Mode. However, its drawback was that the user's appearance would take on toad-like features, and losing control could turn the practitioner into a toad statue.
Ryuchi Cave's Sage Art required the White Snake Sage to inject natural energy into the user's body through its venomous fangs. The downside was that the user would take on snake-like features, and losing control would turn them into a mindless giant serpent.
Although the Shikkotsu Forest's Sage Art wasn't detailed in the original story, Kirito had learned from the Slug Sage that it involved fusing with slugs to sense natural energy. Its drawback was that the user's appearance would resemble a slug, complete with tentacles and rough skin. Losing control would result in total assimilation with the Slug Sage, becoming a part of it.
A commonality among all three was that once the practitioner mastered natural energy, they could enter Sage Mode independently. However, their respective Sage Modes still retained the unique characteristics of their Sage Lands.
After absorbing Jiraiya's Sage Chakra, Kirito used his unique abilities, to analyze the principles behind Mount Myoboku's Sage Art. He discovered that the issue lay in the natural energy being absorbed.
Although it was all natural energy, Jiraiya's natural energy differed slightly from the energy required for Shikkotsu Forest's Sage Art. Both, in turn, differed from the natural energy Kirito absorbed.
From this, Kirito speculated that natural energy might vary across the world. The methods taught in the three Sage Lands likely enabled practitioners to perceive only the type of natural energy that aligned with their Sage Land. This limitation inevitably gave their Sage Modes the traits of their origins.
[If that's the case, is the natural energy I sense meant for humans, the Otsutsuki, or just me specifically?]
While pondering this, Kirito carried Jiraiya's unconscious body on his back and began walking toward Amegakure.
[Good thing I'm strong enough to carry him, otherwise I'd have to leave him behind.]
Once Kirito disappeared from sight, a green figure slowly emerged from the ground. Leaves on its shoulders parted like jaws to reveal a face split between black and white—Black Zetsu and White Zetsu. Both stared in the direction Kirito had gone, their expressions tense.
White Zetsu exclaimed, "You saw that! You saw it! They were right!"
"Why now? This isn't the right time… Why has he appeared here?" Black Zetsu's tone was equally unsettled.
While Black Zetsu had investigated Kirito before, he lacked direct observations. Unable to plant spores on him for closer monitoring, Black Zetsu had relied on secondhand accounts and photos to gather information.
When he first saw Kirito's photo, Black Zetsu suspected he might be of the Otsutsuki Clan. However, after analysis and investigation, he had withheld judgment.
His research confirmed that Kirito was born in Konoha and grew up in the Hyuga Clan's orphanage. Black Zetsu also knew there were no other pure-blooded Otsutsuki in the ninja world besides his mother, Kaguya, and her two sons.
Additionally, the Otsutsuki Clan's members were long-lived, ancient beings who usually operated in pairs. A lone Otsutsuki baby wandering into the ninja world seemed improbable.
There was also Kirito's lifestyle to consider. He had been living peacefully in Konoha and had become Tsunade's apprentice. Such behavior was entirely inconsistent with the arrogance of the Otsutsuki Clan, who looked down on all other creatures.
Thus, Black Zetsu had concluded that Kirito might be an example of "atavism," a phenomenon in which recessive Otsutsuki traits occasionally resurfaced in the ninja world due to the Sage of Six Paths' widespread lineage.
Such cases weren't unheard of: Hashirama awakened Wood Release, Madara awakened the Rinnegan, the Kaguya Clan inherited Kaguya's bone abilities, and the Hyuga Clan carried the Byakugan.
With this rationale, Black Zetsu had dismissed Kirito as a rare but ultimately inconsequential anomaly.
But after seeing Kirito today, Black Zetsu's assumptions were obliterated.
As a creation of Kaguya herself, Black Zetsu instinctively recognized Kirito's true nature upon seeing him. Unlike the diluted descendants in the ninja world, Kirito was a pure-blooded Otsutsuki.
"Damn it… it's still too early for Mother's resurrection!" Black Zetsu muttered anxiously.
If the Otsutsuki Clan decided to act against Kaguya now, her weakened state would leave her vulnerable. Should she be captured and turned into nourishment for a new Divine Tree, even her immortality might not save her.
"We need to accelerate our plans to gather the Tailed Beasts. Mother must be revived before Kirito discovers her existence," Black Zetsu resolved.
He quickly formulated a plan to manipulate Obito into expediting the "Infinite Tsukuyomi" project. Only by summoning the Divine Tree and using the chakra gathered from Infinite Tsukuyomi could Kaguya's resurrection begin.
Black Zetsu shuddered at the thought of Kirito contacting the Otsutsuki Clan. If that happened, reinforcements could arrive within a few years, leaving no chance for Kaguya's revival.
"We need to hurry. I have a feeling that man will be a major obstacle to our plans," Black Zetsu said gravely to White Zetsu. "Judging by the direction he went, he's heading for Nagato. We still need Nagato's power. I'll contact Obito and have him evacuate Nagato immediately."
"Wait, are you saying Obito isn't a match for him either?" White Zetsu asked incredulously.
White Zetsu, like Black Zetsu, knew many ancient secrets. In his view, Obito's abilities made him nearly invincible. Few in the ninja world could even injure him, and the last person who had managed it was long dead.
"Never underestimate the Otsutsuki," Black Zetsu replied urgently. "Let's move!"
"Yeah… we should leave. Quickly," White Zetsu muttered, staring blankly at the sky.
"What now?"
A bright golden star had appeared in the distance. It swiftly transformed into a radiant spear and hurtled toward their location with unstoppable force.
"Oh no—"
Boom!
A violent explosion shook the ground, creating yet another massive crater amidst the rubble-strewn wilderness.
As the golden lightning faded, there was no sign of Black Zetsu or White Zetsu—only the deep crater where they had stood moments before.
