Chapter 51: Chapter 51: Jiraiya's Moment
The train rolled steadily toward the border between the Land of Fire and the Land of Rain, the scenery along the way quite pleasant.
Inside a private compartment, the group of seven was taking time to rest. This was the special squad's first time working together, so naturally, it took a bit of bonding and adjustment to settle in.
Looking out at the serene landscape, Jiraiya couldn't help but sigh with admiration.
"The scenery in the Land of Fire is really something. So much better than the endless sandstorms of the Land of Wind! I went there once, couldn't even find a single hot spring bath!"
Hearing that, Kata leaned over and asked in a hushed voice, "Jiraiya, um… when's the next update of Icha Icha Paradise coming out?"
Jiraiya's eyes lit up, he hadn't expected to find a fan among his teammates.
With a mysterious grin, he whispered, "I'm still gathering material, but I've made some progress lately. I'll give you a sneak peek, it's going to be a brand-new theme this time!"
Kata looked excited.
Thinking he was about to be praised, Jiraiya jumped in, "You agree it's gonna be smooth as silk, huh? Can't wait, right?! Heh, I promise you won't be disappointed this time!"
Jiraiya suddenly realized he might've come off a bit full of himself.
Feeling a little awkward, he quickly threw an arm around Kata's shoulder and changed the topic, gossiping.
"Hey, that Iwa in your squad… why does she look so young? Like a fresh-outta-school genin!"
Kata shrugged helplessly. "Don't be fooled… fooled by Iwa's baby face. She's the same… same age as me!"
Looking at the slightly stuttering Kata, Jiraiya couldn't help but feel anxious on his behalf.
He glanced casually in Iwa's direction and saw her engrossed in a book. From the title alone, he could tell it was a text on the cultures and geography of the various nations in the ninja world.
'So she's a bookworm, huh? Still… quite the figure. Could almost rival Tsunade!' Jiraiya thought.
As if sensing his gaze, Iwa looked up from her book and made eye contact with him. She gave a small nod before returning to her reading.
Jiraiya had always been drawn to mature women, and Iwa had the full package, an alluring figure, fair skin, and those exotic green eyes that added a touch of intellectual charm.
That vibe of elegance and intelligence deeply intrigued him… if only it weren't for that baby face breaking the illusion.
Snapping out of his thoughts, Jiraiya muttered to Kata, "What a shame… just a tiny bit off."
Kata looked puzzled. "Jiraiya-san, what's a… a bit off?"
Jiraiya despondently held up his pinkie and pinched a tiny space between the knuckles.
"Just this much."
Kata still didn't get it, but he'd already moved on to a new topic. "Hey, Jiraiya… do you know about the p… priestess of the Land of Demons?"
Jiraiya wasn't exactly the studious type, he usually relied on Orochimaru for intel, so his knowledge about priestesses was limited.
So he turned and asked, "Hey, Snake Bastard, you know anything about the priestess of the Land of Demons?"
Orochimaru glanced at the two eager faces and said flatly, "You idiot, is your brain made of poop? They taught about priestesses at the Academy, remember?"
Jiraiya frowned, trying to recall. "The geography teacher always made me stand in the hallway. How the hell would I know what was taught in class?"
Orochimaru thought for a moment. That did sound about right. Aside from the Third Hokage's lectures, Jiraiya always got kicked out of every other class for various reasons.
With a sigh, Orochimaru said, "I still don't get how you managed to graduate."
Jiraiya smirked, "Hey, didn't you give me that cheat sheet back then?"
Orochimaru paused, suddenly remembering how Jiraiya had clung to his leg, begging pathetically. If not for that, he never would've helped this idiot pass.
"Should've let you stay in the Academy a few more years," Orochimaru muttered.
Jiraiya puffed out his chest. "Come on, we all know you're softhearted. With me on the scene, a little test was nothing!"
Orochimaru grumbled inwardly, being stuck with this fool was his curse.
Trying to redirect the conversation, Orochimaru said, "The Land of Demons is home to a sealed demon named Moryo.
It uses demon chakra to create massive clay warrior puppets, about three meters tall, armed with stone blades and extremely durable."
Iwa, who had been quietly studying the Land of Demons, chimed in. "The priestess is tasked with guarding the seal on Moryo.
Each generation uses her body as the medium to maintain the seal.
They're also gifted with unique powers. The current priestess, can briefly foresee the future. Her predictions are said to be extremely accurate."
Jiraiya turned toward her, deliberately avoiding eye contact with her face, feeling quite clever about it.
Excitedly, he said, "Then maybe she could predict whether I'll become the world's savior!"
Orochimaru scoffed. "Idiot. It's still broad daylight, stop dreaming."
Jiraiya ignored the jab. He was used to it. He'd get his own back when the chance came.
He started daydreaming, he saves the world, his teacher beams with pride, Orochimaru becomes his fanboy, Tsunade serves him tea, and the whole village chants his name.
Then Iwa's voice cut through the fantasy.
"She can only predict the deaths of people around her. So don't get your hopes up."
Jiraiya instantly lost interest. But for the sake of her generous figure, he decided to let it slide.
He was never one to sit still for long, so he threw out another topic.
"You guys know anything about the Sky Ninja?"
When Jiraiya brought up the Sky Ninja, Arima decided it was time to share the latest intel.
Earlier, he'd been sitting quietly beside Tsunade, enjoying the passing scenery. It wasn't often he got to travel with her, so he ignored the rest of the team's gossip.
Tsunade had no interest in Jiraiya's pervy banter either. She preferred resting her head on Arima's shoulder, basking in his calm presence and the moment's tranquility.
Then Arima spoke up. "I have the latest intel on the Sky Ninja. Let me fill you in."
Everyone immediately straightened up, paying close attention.
Arima began seriously.
"The Sky Ninja are shrouded in mystery. According to the latest reports, they live in a floating city called Ancor Vantian.
For travel, they use iron wings that allow them to perform a jutsu called Flight Technique. This gives them superior aerial control.
It's similar to Iwagakure's Earth Style: Light-Weight Boulder Technique, but their metal wings have propulsion devices, giving them high mobility."
Hearing this, everyone started to feel that this mission might be tougher than expected.
Arima continued. "Their leader is named Miyadera Tadashi. His whereabouts are always erratic. According to the interrogation department, he's cunning, ruthless, greedy, and quite the lecher."
At that last remark, the entire group turned to stare at Jiraiya. After all, who else constantly got caught peeping in the hot springs?
Feeling the attention, Jiraiya flushed red, awkwardly muttering, "Writers need research! It's all for art, you guys wouldn't understand."
Kata, however, was moved. "Jiraiya…. you've been… been misunderstood! May the Six Paths Sage… bless you with m… more great work!"
Jiraiya looked at the stammering Kata, eyes misty. He grasped the young man's hand tightly, deeply touched by the bond they were forming.
Just then, Arima's expression suddenly turned grim. With a swift flurry of hand seals, he muttered.
"Wood Style: Shielding Wall Technique!"
In an instant, a massive wooden barrier shaped like a demonic fang-faced mask enclosed the train, shielding them just as a barrage of attacks struck.
Deafening explosions echoed as the enemy assault smashed against the wooden shield.
