Chapter 6: 06 Bonds In The Shadows
Chapter Six: Bonds in the Shadows
Riku sat by the edge of the academy grounds, staring at the horizon. The last few days had been a blur of training, rejection, and quiet contemplation. The rejection, as usual, was brutal, but something about it felt different this time. It was like a storm had passed through him, leaving him more determined. His chakra, still unstable but growing, hummed under his skin in a way that felt more… alive. Like it was calling out for something, though Riku had yet to understand what.
He closed his eyes and let the wind wash over him. Training wasn't enough; he could feel that much. He needed something more. But what? Every rejection seemed to unlock a new layer of his power, but each time, he felt more distant from the people around him. He wasn't sure if that was because of the power itself or the emotional toll it took. Either way, the people at the academy still saw him as an outsider. No one cared to approach him, and that suited him just fine.
"Riku," a soft voice broke through his thoughts. He turned slightly, but didn't acknowledge the newcomer. It was Nono, his caretaker from the orphanage. She had become a constant presence in his life, one he found both comforting and suffocating. She always cared for him, always tried to pull him out of his shell, but Riku wasn't sure if he wanted to be pulled out. He didn't need anyone. That was what he told himself.
But deep down, he knew he couldn't ignore her forever.
"I'm here if you need anything," Nono continued, standing a few paces away from him. Her eyes were soft, but Riku could feel the weight behind them. She didn't push any further. Instead, she let the silence fill the space between them.
"I'm fine," Riku said, his voice distant and cold, though it wasn't entirely intentional. He just didn't know how to be anything else.
"You don't have to be fine all the time, you know?" Nono smiled gently. "Sometimes, it's okay to let someone in."
Riku didn't respond. What could he say to that? He'd been alone for so long. Allowing anyone in felt dangerous, even if they meant well.
After a long pause, Nono left, her figure disappearing into the academy building. Riku exhaled slowly, unsure of what to feel. He didn't regret not talking to her, but a part of him wondered if maybe—just maybe—he was pushing away someone who could help him. The thought left him unsettled, but he quickly shoved it aside. There was no room for emotions like that in his life. At least, that's what he told himself.

The Next Day
Riku sat in the academy classroom, the familiar hum of murmurs filling the space. The students were all around him, some chatting, some studying, but Riku barely noticed. His mind was elsewhere, still focused on the growing power inside him, the mystery of his chakra, and how it tied into the ever-present rejections.
He hadn't received another boost yet, but he could feel it coming. The tension in the air seemed to thicken whenever he thought about it, like the universe itself was preparing him for the next test.
Nono had given him some space today, letting him attend classes on his own. Riku was grateful for it, though he wasn't sure if that meant he was getting better at managing his emotions or simply better at keeping people at arm's length.
"You're not going to talk to anyone today either?" The voice was sharp, almost too blunt for Riku to ignore. He looked up to find one of the academy's more outspoken students, Yuka, standing in front of him.
Yuka was a girl with a no-nonsense attitude and an energy that almost clashed with Riku's own silent demeanor. She wasn't the kind of person who let people slide by unnoticed, and for whatever reason, she had taken an interest in him. He wasn't sure why, but Yuka seemed insistent on trying to draw him out of his shell. And she wasn't going to let it go easily.
"What do you want, Yuka?" Riku asked, his voice still the same—calm, distant, and cool.
"Don't give me that," she shot back, crossing her arms. "You're always sitting here by yourself, acting like the world doesn't exist around you. What's your deal?"
"I'm fine," Riku repeated, feeling the familiar response on the tip of his tongue. It was automatic by now. But something in her eyes stopped him from saying it again. She was looking at him—really looking at him—as if she could see right through the mask he wore.
"I don't believe you," Yuka said, her voice softer this time. "You've got potential, Riku. I can tell. But you're wasting it, hiding away from everything. It's not healthy."
"I don't need your help," Riku replied, though his voice was quieter this time. He wasn't sure why, but something about Yuka's words had unsettled him.
"I didn't say you needed it," Yuka said, a small smile tugging at her lips. "But I think you could use a friend. You can't just keep pushing people away forever."
"I don't need anyone," Riku muttered, half to himself. But as the words left his mouth, he felt something shift in the pit of his stomach. It was almost like an uncomfortable truth creeping up on him. He wanted to dismiss it, but for once, he wasn't so sure.
Yuka said nothing else and simply walked away, leaving Riku to his thoughts.
He watched her go, and for the first time in a while, he felt conflicted. Maybe he didn't need anyone—but the thought of continuing to be alone didn't feel as comfortable as it used to.

Later That Day
The sun had set by the time Riku found himself once again outside, this time by the training grounds. He didn't want to think too hard about what had happened with Yuka. She was just another person who didn't understand him, right? Yet, even as he tried to convince himself of that, he couldn't shake the feeling that maybe she was right.
He took a deep breath and focused, willing his chakra to respond to his commands. It was still unstable, but it was there. The energy swirled within him, rising like a storm, calling to him. He closed his eyes, willing it to calm down, but it resisted.
A flash of memory passed through his mind—his past life. His training, the battles, the pain. He knew how to control power; it was just a matter of time. But each rejection, each push away, it made him feel like he was losing control. The chakra had its own will now, and that was something Riku wasn't sure he could handle.
As the energy surged, a familiar sensation took over him—the strange, hollow feeling of the rejection power. And then, just like before, it faded. The energy was different this time. Stronger. More refined. And for a brief moment, Riku felt something else. A small thread of connection to the world around him. He didn't know what it was, but it was there.
