Chapter 7: Forming Bonds
Riku stood quietly in the corner of the academy training ground, watching his classmates spar. The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the dirt field. His mind was always calculating, always analyzing, but for the moment, he just observed. His hands were tucked into the pockets of his academy uniform, his eyes narrowing as he noted the way the students moved.
They were still weak. Their chakra control was sloppy, their techniques half-formed. It wasn't anything he hadn't already seen in his past life. But Riku wasn't here to judge. He was here to learn.
"Hey, Riku!" A voice called out from behind him. He turned slightly to find the girl who had been calling him since the academy started—Aiko. She had short black hair and bright, inquisitive eyes. Her voice was always cheery, like she was trying to pierce through his cold exterior.
He didn't respond, but she didn't seem to mind. Aiko had been trying to befriend him for weeks now, despite his indifference. She had this way of seeing through the walls he built up, though she still didn't understand the full depth of his solitude.
"I'm gonna try a new technique today. Wanna watch?" she asked, bouncing on her heels. "Maybe you can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong."
Riku nodded, giving her a curt glance before turning back to the sparring matches. "Show me."
Aiko beamed, charging toward the center of the field. She had a lot of enthusiasm, but Riku wasn't sure how much of it was backed by actual skill. Her chakra control was still shaky, and she often lost focus in the middle of a technique.
Her attempt at a fireball jutsu ended in failure as the flames sputtered and fizzled out before she could even aim it properly. She sighed, rubbing the back of her head sheepishly. "I'll get it next time!"
Riku didn't offer words of encouragement. Instead, he simply observed, his thoughts racing.
She's impulsive. Her chakra isn't focused. Her technique is all over the place.
He remained silent as Aiko tried again, each time with the same result. But something changed as she tried yet another time—the flames sputtered, then suddenly grew in intensity. Not much, but it was improvement.
Riku felt something stir inside him. It was a faint pulse of chakra, something that wasn't there before. He blinked, his gaze sharpening as he turned to Aiko, now staring at her in a more focused way.
Interesting.
Aiko's technique wasn't perfect, far from it, but there was potential. He could see it. And, for some reason, it stirred something within him, a curiosity that was becoming harder to ignore.
The sound of footsteps caught his attention, and he looked up to see their instructor, a woman named Mei, walking over. She was one of the newer teachers, and unlike the rest, she wasn't dismissive or harsh. She was calm, observant, and... had a subtle way of pushing her students to do their best.
"Riku," Mei said, her voice soft but authoritative. "You've been quiet, as usual. Do you have anything to add?"
Riku glanced at her, then back at the sparring students. "They need to learn how to control their chakra better," he said simply.
Mei nodded, folding her arms across her chest. "True. But what about you? How are your techniques progressing?"
He didn't immediately respond. The truth was, he was still learning how to tap into his own chakra, still struggling with its unpredictable nature. It was something tied to his past life, a power he couldn't fully comprehend. But he wouldn't tell her that. Instead, he just gave her a nonchalant shrug.
"Not bad," he said. "But nothing worth showing yet."
Mei smiled slightly. "I'm sure you'll surprise us when you're ready. You're a quiet one, but you're observant. Keep that up."
Riku didn't respond, but her words lingered in his mind. She was the first to ever acknowledge that quality in him. Most of his life, he had been seen as distant or aloof, but Mei... she seemed to understand him in a way he wasn't used to.
As Mei turned to leave, Riku's eyes followed her for a moment, his thoughts clouded with something he couldn't quite place. It wasn't attraction. No, it was something deeper, something unspoken. She wasn't like the others—she was different. But he didn't know what to make of it yet.
His attention was drawn back to Aiko, who had given up on the fireball jutsu for now and was practicing basic chakra control exercises. The sight of her struggling, yet continuing to push forward despite her failures, struck something inside him.
Resilience.
He didn't know why, but he felt something stir within him when he saw her determination. It wasn't something he could easily ignore.
The day wore on, and as the sun set behind the academy, the students began to gather their things. Aiko waved at Riku as she walked off with a few friends. "See you tomorrow, Riku!"
Riku simply nodded, though he didn't watch her leave. Instead, his thoughts drifted back to the feeling inside him.
This world is full of weakness, but... there's potential here. Maybe I'll stay a little longer.
