Facing the four Amegakure shinobi with unfriendly expressions, who were subtly forming a surrounding stance, Rinjin's lips curled into a grin, revealing a row of sharp, white teeth.
"You guys... are the worst undercover agents I've ever seen."
After speaking, Rinjin shook his head with a chuckle and continued, "From the very beginning, you showed no vigilance at all. A seven or eight-year-old kid wandering around outside the village—didn't that strike you as odd? Use your brain. Someone with the guts to do that, do you really think they could be subdued so easily?"
Looking at the genin standing beside Amagawa, Rinjin wore an expression of disappointment, as if lamenting their incompetence. Then, he shifted his gaze to Amagawa.
"And you, you couldn't even infiltrate the target village. It really makes me doubt your abilities. Oh, and by the way, setting up your temporary base in a cave this close to Konoha—were you picking a nice spot for your own grave?..."
"Enough!" Amagawa interrupted coldly before Rinjin could finish.
The thought of having to rely on Rinjin to infiltrate Konoha made Amagawa grind his molars in frustration. For now, he had to keep this brat under control. Once they successfully entered Konoha, Rinjin's life would be over!
With this thought, a stiff smile forced its way onto Amagawa's face. "Rinjin-kun, don't take it to heart. We... we're all just trying to complete Lord Hanzō's mission. You... you should head back for now. Come find us here once everything is ready."
Hearing this, Rinjin slapped his forehead and burst into laughter, bending over as if he couldn't hold it in.
"Haha~ You're killing me here!"
After laughing for a while, and just as Amagawa's face turned as dark as the bottom of a pot, Rinjin finally exhaled deeply and stood up straight.
"Amagawa, you're not just stupid; you're also terribly naive. At this point, you're still thinking about infiltrating Konoha."
Hearing this, Amagawa's expression instantly turned icy, his eyes freezing over like ancient glacial ice.
"In that case, you're useless. Die!"
With those words, a kunai shot straight at Rinjin.
Rinjin pressed lightly on the ground with his foot, propelling himself quickly toward the cave entrance, narrowly dodging the kunai.
Seeing this, Amagawa's pupils contracted slightly, his heart steeling itself.
If that's the case, Rinjin, you must die!
By now, Amagawa had made up his mind—to abandon this mission and kill the infuriating brat. When he returned to the village, he would report to Lord Hanzō that Rinjin had betrayed them and led Konoha's forces to attack them. Forced into a hasty battle near Konoha, he had no choice but to retreat with his team.
Finally, Lord Hanzō's fury would surely be appeased by killing that so-called Mizuguma of the Northern Front!
Having devised this plan in an instant, a cruel smile tugged at Amagawa's lips.
"Attack together! Kill this damned brat!"
With his command, the four of them attacked in unison. Kunai and shuriken flew toward Rinjin as he fled.
Just as Rinjin exited the cave, he was instantly pierced by seven or eight kunai, turning him into a human sieve.
At that moment—
"Poof!"
With a faint sound, Rinjin transformed into a wooden log.
"A substitution jutsu! After him, don't let him escape!" Amagawa barked, frowning as he decisively gave chase.
The four of them rushed out of the cave.
At this moment, Rinjin stood on a high tree branch, looking down at them from above.
"Finish this quickly. Don't alert Konoha's hounds!"
"Water Release: Wild Water Wave!"
At Amagawa's command, the four attacked again in unison.
On the tree branch, Rinjin leaned against the trunk, watching the incoming shuriken and the water release jutsu that followed. He clicked his tongue in boredom, his mind drifting to the purpose of this encounter.
One goal was to test the strength of these Amegakure shinobi. If they were too weak, he'd simply eliminate them.
The second goal, however, was what he was about to accomplish—showing his fangs.
Of course, it was for the ANBU of Konoha hiding in the shadows.
He needed to elevate his standing and importance in the eyes of Konoha's higher-ups from every angle possible.
And strength was part of that equation.
As these thoughts flashed through his mind, Rinjin's mental calculations clicked into place. He muttered under his breath, "First, ninjutsu."
No sooner had the words left his mouth than he was struck by the incoming shuriken. Then, a torrent of water gushed from Amagawa's mouth, instantly engulfing Rinjin's figure.
Got him!
Amagawa's heart leapt with joy.
But in the next second, with another "poof," a thick wooden log emerged from the water flow.
"Another substitution jutsu?! Damn it, our intel was wrong—this brat's hand seals are ridiculously fast!"
According to the intel from Amegakure, Rinjin was merely a rookie who had just begun his journey as a ninja, albeit with some training in espionage.
Yet the scene before them was worlds apart from the report.
Rinjin's hand seal speed far surpassed ordinary shinobi.
As the water dissipated, the tree branch was already empty.
"Where is he? Find him!"
Amagawa frowned deeply, scanning his surroundings as he issued rapid orders.
The three genin with him wasted no time, their eyes darting around in an attempt to locate Rinjin.
Meanwhile, the ANBU who had regrouped with Hiruzen Sarutobi were also searching for Rinjin.
Hidden among the dense branches, they had a clearer view than Amagawa's team on the ground.
Even so, they couldn't spot a trace of Rinjin.
"Have you found him?"
"No!"
"Could he have escaped?"
"Probably. At least he knows when to quit."
The ANBU wearing animal masks whispered their thoughts to each other.
Hiruzen Sarutobi discreetly scanned the surrounding ANBU, a hint of disappointment in his eyes. He sighed softly.
"Above."
A barely audible voice reached their ears.
The ANBU were startled, instinctively looking up. Through the dense leaves, they glimpsed the night sky.
On the ground, Amagawa's team belatedly raised their heads as well, gazing upward.
In the sky, under the vast and luminous moon, Rinjin's body stretched gracefully.
At that moment, time seemed to pause. The cool moonlight bathed him in a silvery glow, while countless senbon surrounded him, their needle-like tips gleaming with a chilling light, ready to strike.
"Night rains bring whispers of falling petals," Rinjin murmured as if reciting poetry.
With a cruel smile curling at his lips, he clasped his hands together.
"Magnet Release: Drizzle of Falling Petals Technique!"
In an instant, countless senbon rained down like a fine drizzle.
Amagawa's eyes widened in horror, his pupils contracting to pinpoints. His heart sank.
Damn it, this brat had been planning to kill them all along!
"Dodge!" Amagawa's desperate roar echoed through the forest.
But it was too late.
His figure and Rinjin's senbon descended simultaneously.
"Whoosh... whoosh... whoosh..." The faint, piercing sound of countless projectiles slicing through the air filled the forest.
In an instant, the razor-sharp senbon pierced through the four shinobi effortlessly. They remained standing, their bodies riddled with needles.
Individually, a senbon's lethality was low. But what about thousands upon thousands of them?
Though the number wasn't quite that exaggerated, Rinjin was only dealing with four Amegakure shinobi, after all.
"Drip."
In the now eerily silent forest, a single drop of crimson blood fell, splattering on the ground and seeping into the soil like a delicate flower in bloom.
Then, the sound of dripping blood grew more frequent.
The lifeless bodies of Amagawa's team stood upright, blood pooling beneath them, forming one crimson blossom after another.
Hidden in the shadows, the ANBU felt their scalps tingle.
They were professionally trained, yet the eerie and tragic scene before them quietly chipped away at their psychological defenses.
Putting themselves in Rinjin's place, they realized that if they had faced him, it would be their bodies standing stiffly, with blood blooming at their feet.
With this thought, several ANBU glanced at the figure ahead of them with admiration and gratitude.
If it hadn't been for Lord Hiruzen Sarutobi's reminder, they might not have detected Rinjin's technique.
After all, apart from a select few shinobi, most were not adept at launching attacks from the air.
First, the target would be obvious—especially in open areas, making them highly conspicuous.
Second, there was no foothold in the air. For most shinobi who couldn't fly, adjusting their position mid-air was nearly impossible, leaving them vulnerable.
At the forefront, Hiruzen Sarutobi watched Rinjin descend from the sky, deeply impressed.
His perspective far surpassed that of ordinary ANBU.
It wasn't Rinjin's ninjutsu that amazed him most, but rather his efficient and precise combat intelligence.
The air—a blind spot for most shinobi.
Yet Rinjin had turned it into his advantage, using the dense forest terrain to his benefit. First, he stood on a tree branch, drawing the enemy's gaze upward.
Then, he vanished with a substitution jutsu.
At that point, anyone's instinctive reaction would be to guard against a sneak attack.
In the enemy's mind, the sky near the tree branch—where Rinjin had been—was as safe as the branch itself.
After all, they had already bombarded that area with ninjutsu. How could it not be safe?
Thus, the enemy began scanning areas they deemed unsafe, inadvertently ignoring the sky. This gave Rinjin ample time to form his hand seals.
As Hiruzen Sarutobi pondered, Rinjin had already landed lightly on the ground.
His gaze discreetly swept over the dark corners behind him, and he casually strolled over to the bodies of Amagawa's team, picking his nose as he admired his handiwork.
Hidden in the shadows, Hiruzen Sarutobi sighed softly, preparing to intervene.
This brat had the strength, but his experience was sorely lacking!
At that moment, one of the bodies—the corpse of Amagawa—suddenly turned transparent, then exploded into a humanoid mass of water.
"A water clone?!"
Rinjin's brow furrowed as he spun around.
Not far behind him, in the dense forest, Amagawa, bloodied and battered, his eyes bloodshot, completed the final hand seal with his senbon-pierced hands.
"Die! Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique!"
